9LV SAT > Modules9LV SAT-S FORPARENT SHIPSThe ship module provides a real-timetactical picture to any area of the vesselincluding the bridge, command andoperations areas, electronic warfare office, aviation planning room and task groupplanning room. Commanders know thateveryone is working from the same picture, while teams have more time to collaborateand make assessments. The system providesadvanced capabilities but its intuitive touchscreens and automated processes aresimple to use. It has been designed withminimal training requirements so thateveryone on board can use it.9LV SAT-S utilises data from ship andnetworked sensors to create a synchronisedsituation picture that can be sentautomatically to every linked display. It supports plug-and-play input fromsensors such as GPS, ARPA and AIS.As part of a networked force, it alsoprovides all users with operationalsupport including automated dataexchange, tactical planning and geospatialtools. Data links allow orders and otherinformation to be communicated betweenall displays in the network, including linkedsystems at HQ and on mobile assets orRHIBs that may be far from the parentship. The use of encrypted high-frequencyradio data channels eliminates thecommunication problems that inevitablyoccur when RHIBs are over the horizon.FUNCTIONBENEFITSTRENGTHCONNECTING ALL ASSETSCOMMON SITUATIONAL PICTUREMAXIMUM AWARENESS9LV SAT-HQ FORHEADQUARTERSJoint and regional headquarters can access a simple andimmediate tactical display of all their maritime patrol forceactivities, enabling more effective operational control.6

9LV SAT > Track recordTrack Record9LV SAT systems are in service withthe Royal Australian Navy (RAN) andare used around the world.Saab engineers worked with the RAN tofine-tune the system, adopting user-friendlyspecifications and automated functions tomeet their requirements. Training has beenconducted in a number of harbours andclassrooms and takes only one dayto complete. All Australian ANZAC and Adelaide-classfrigates deployed in the Arabian Gulf areequipped with 9LV SAT as an integral partof anti-piracy operations. Such operationsare hazardous, with historical incidents ofboarding parties coming under threat.9LV SAT gives the commander fullawareness of the location and activitiesof all boarding teams allowing immediaterecall and recommended courses to steerclear of any danger.SAT-S was used in a RAN Armidale classpatrol boat with SAT-R on its RHIB asset. The system allowed the patrol boat toconduct over-the-horizon boarding andinterception operations against illegal entryand illegal fishing vessels.7

9LV SAT > Open architectureOPEN ARCHITECTURESaab employs the principles ofNaval Open Architecture (NOA)for the 9LV family. This increasesopportunities for innovation andcompetition, as well as reducingburdens of cost and risk through life.NOA involves creating modular, interoperable systems that adopt openstandards and have published interfaces. The benefits of this approach include:Reduction of system andlifecycle cost:• Reduces development cycle time• Enables reuse of components• Reduces maintenance constraintsEncourages innovation:• Facilitates rapid technology insertion• Allows continued access to cuttingedgetechnologies from multiplesuppliers, creating best-of-breedsolutionsMitigates risks, avoiding:• Technology obsolescence• Unwanted ties with proprietary orvendor-unique technology• Reliance on a single source of supply9
