The feeof £12.00 is payable at our local offices and it includesuse of our slipways. If for any reason you are unableto exit from the waterway you will be charged anadditional £8.00 for use of an overnight mooring and anadditional £12.00 fee for the following day.The Falkirk WheelUse of the Wheel is free to all private pleasure boat licenceholders. It is best to book your passage time ahead.Visitor mooring informationScottish Canals visitor moorings are free of chargeand available for short term use only – a maximumof 24 hours on the Lowland canals. Visitor mooringsare available subject to the advertised mooring siterestrictions. A limited number of visitor moorings atSeaport Marina on the Caledonian Canal are usuallyavailable, outside the marina compound, at no extracost. Visitor moorings within the marina compound areavailable free of charge for the first night (One free nightper licence) and £8.00 per night thereafter.Short Term licence holders are reminded that BellanochMarina, on the Crinan Canal, is reserved for long termberth holders and must not be used by visiting craft.InsuranceYour vessel must have insurance that covers at least onemillion pounds third party liabilities.2 scottishcanals.co.uk
Boat SafetyYour boat should comply with our safety requirements atall times unless it is a very simple vessel.Check to see whether it is exempt by tracing through thequestions on the chart below.You don’t need a Boat Safety examination for a Transit,two week, 30 day or Explorer licence, however, we havethe right to refuse access onto our waterways for anyboat that we think may present a safety risk to otherwaterway users. In purchasing a short term licence youagree to allow our employees or an appointed surveyorto carry out a safety check at any reasonable time. If webelieve your boat is dangerous, you will have to removeit from the waterway.To qualify for a 2 month licence your boat must haveone of the following:• A current certificate to show compliance with theBoat Safety Scheme requirements• A current Declaration of Conformity with the EU’sRecreational Craft DirectivePersonal SafetyThe Waterways that you use can be hazardous places.The safety of our users and people is very important tous and we do our best to make the system as safe aspossible. Due to their historic character, it is impossiblefor us to adapt them to make them completely safewithout ruining what we seek to conserve. As a result,there are inherent risks for those that use them. Pleaseensure that there is always sufficient competent crewto minimise risks to your own and other people’s safety.Ask for a free copy of our Skipper’s Guide and check forlocal information about the Waterways you plan to use.Waterway FacilitiesWe provide a range of basic services for boaters,including water points, refuse disposal, toilets, andshowers throughout the waterway network. Elsanemptying points are available on the Lowlands andCaledonian Canals. These are generally free to licenceholders. Access to sanitary facilities is by special Yale key,available from sea locks and Waterway offices (£6.00deposit on the Lowlands Canals and free of charge ifreturned on exiting the Crinan and Caledonian Canals).Payment for other facilities is by digital card or cashdepending on the location.
