Explorer <strong>Licences</strong> are for vessels visitingfrom non-<strong>Scottish</strong> Canal waterways, entering a canal bysea, other inl<strong>and</strong> navigations or kept on l<strong>and</strong>.Day Rate for Trailer Boats(Lowl<strong>and</strong> <strong>Canals</strong> only)Access to our waterways is welcomed from day visitorsaccessing from <strong>Scottish</strong> Canal owned slipways. The feeof £12.00 is payable at our local offices <strong>and</strong> it includesuse of our slipways. If for any reason you are unableto exit from the waterway you will be charged anadditional £8.00 for use of an overnight mooring <strong>and</strong> anadditional £12.00 fee for the following day.The Falkirk WheelUse of the Wheel is free to all private pleasure boat licenceholders. It is best to book your passage time ahead.<strong>Visitor</strong> mooring information<strong>Scottish</strong> <strong>Canals</strong> visitor moorings are free of charge<strong>and</strong> available for short term use only – a maximumof 24 hours on the Lowl<strong>and</strong> canals. <strong>Visitor</strong> mooringsare available subject to the advertised mooring siterestrictions. A limited number of visitor moorings atSeaport Marina on the Caledonian Canal are usuallyavailable, outside the marina compound, at no extracost. <strong>Visitor</strong> moorings within the marina compound areavailable free of charge for the first night (One free nightper licence) <strong>and</strong> £8.00 per night thereafter.<strong>Short</strong> <strong>Term</strong> licence holders are reminded that BellanochMarina, on the Crinan Canal, is reserved for long termberth holders <strong>and</strong> must not be used by visiting craft.InsuranceYour vessel must have insurance that covers at least onemillion pounds third party liabilities.2 scottishcanals.co.uk


Boat SafetyYour boat should comply with our safety requirements atall times unless it is a very simple vessel.Check to see whether it is exempt by tracing through thequestions on the chart below.You don’t need a Boat Safety examination for a <strong>Transit</strong>,two week, 30 day or Explorer licence, however, we havethe right to refuse access onto our waterways for anyboat that we think may present a safety risk to otherwaterway users. In purchasing a short term licence youagree to allow our employees or an appointed surveyorto carry out a safety check at any reasonable time. If webelieve your boat is dangerous, you will have to removeit from the waterway.To qualify for a 2 month licence your boat must haveone of the following:• A current certificate to show compliance with theBoat Safety Scheme requirements• A current Declaration of Conformity with the EU’sRecreational Craft DirectivePersonal SafetyThe Waterways that you use can be hazardous places.The safety of our users <strong>and</strong> people is very important tous <strong>and</strong> we do our best to make the system as safe aspossible. Due to their historic character, it is impossiblefor us to adapt them to make them completely safewithout ruining what we seek to conserve. As a result,there are inherent risks for those that use them. Pleaseensure that there is always sufficient competent crewto minimise risks to your own <strong>and</strong> other people’s safety.Ask for a free copy of our Skipper’s Guide <strong>and</strong> check forlocal information about the Waterways you plan to use.Waterway FacilitiesWe provide a range of basic services for boaters,including water points, refuse disposal, toilets, <strong>and</strong>showers throughout the waterway network. Elsanemptying points are available on the Lowl<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong>Caledonian <strong>Canals</strong>. These are generally free to licenceholders. Access to sanitary facilities is by special Yale key,available from sea locks <strong>and</strong> Waterway offices (£6.00deposit on the Lowl<strong>and</strong>s <strong>Canals</strong> <strong>and</strong> free of charge ifreturned on exiting the Crinan <strong>and</strong> Caledonian <strong>Canals</strong>).Payment for other facilities is by digital card or cashdepending on the location. Navigation Rules1 The Boat Licence does not give you any priorityof passage on any Waterway. You must follow thedirections of our local people who may decide whichboats have priority.2 You are responsible for assessing whether it is safeto use the Waterway in flood or strong streamconditions. Our Waterway offices will provideinformation.3 You must share locks up to their capacity. There is noright to the exclusive use of a lock.4 You must not:(a) use any electricity generator, including the Boat’sengine, at any <strong>Scottish</strong> <strong>Canals</strong>’ mooring between8pm <strong>and</strong> 7am, unless you are moored in isolation,out of earshot of other people. We do not intendthis Condition to stop you moving the Boat fromthe mooring.(b) run the Boat’s engine in gear when it is mooredas this can damage the waterway walls <strong>and</strong> causea nuisance to other people.(c) do anything at any mooring which will causedamage or nuisance to any other person or theirproperty.(d) discharge anything into the Waterway from theBoat except unpolluted surface water that drainsnaturally or water from sinks or showers on boardthe Boat.(e) obstruct the towpath or use our l<strong>and</strong> for storingitems from your Boat.(f) take a vehicle onto our towpaths or l<strong>and</strong> orpark on them unless we have already given ourpermission.5 There is no general restriction on the use of locksby portable <strong>and</strong> unpowered craft. However, in theinterest of safety <strong>and</strong> to conserve water, specificlocal restrictions may apply. We encourage users tocarry these craft around locks if possible. If it is notpossible, we recommend using ropes to pass theBoat through the lock. It is preferable that there isnobody on board the Boat while it is in the lock. Local<strong>Scottish</strong> <strong>Canals</strong> instructions must always be followed.6 Unpowered craft may not navigate certain tunnels.Please check locally for advice or ask us for thenational list of tunnels. Where you are permitted tonavigate, we encourage the following precautions:(a) navigate in groups of between three <strong>and</strong> six craft,at least one of which must be navigated by anexperienced person.(b) everyone should be able to swim, should weara life jacket, <strong>and</strong> have a waterproof torch <strong>and</strong>whistle attached to them.(c) the craft must have adequate buoyancy.(d) you must display a securely fixed, bright whitelight showing forward.7 You must not crane a Boat into or out of anyWaterway without our written permission, otherthan at a boatyard with appropriate facilities. Thisis to ensure compliance with the relevant liftingregulations <strong>and</strong> to ensure the safety of otherwaterway users.Summary of Conditions1 You must ensure that when the Boat is under way,there is always an adequate <strong>and</strong> competent crew inattendance. A copy of our Skipper’s Guide should bekept on board the Boat <strong>and</strong> drawn to the attentionof all crew members <strong>and</strong> passengers.2 You must display the licence so that it is easily visibleby our people on the bank or at locks.3 The licence is not refundable <strong>and</strong> not transferablebetween craft.4 The licence does not permit use of the Boat forcarrying goods, or as a tug or other workboat or forany business purpose without our permission.5 The licence does not allow you to moor except forshort periods ancillary to cruising. You must havesomewhere to keep the Boat when it is not beingused for cruising.6 You agree to comply with navigation rules, relevantActs, Byelaws <strong>and</strong> regulations, <strong>and</strong> to follow any of ourlawful directions, spoken or written (including signs).7 You agree to be responsible for any damage ordifficulty caused by you or the Boat because ofanything you have carelessly done or not done.8 Once the licence has ended, unless you re-license theBoat you must remove it from our waters. If you donot, we have powers to remove it ourselves <strong>and</strong> tocharge you for the costs we incur in doing this.9 Waterways are occasionally closed for repairs or dueto emergencies. We will not rebate licence fees inrespect of such closures.10 The licence does not allow you to tow the Boat byanimal or vehicle.
