Vaisala AVAPSDropsonde Receiving SystemThe complete solution for accurate, targetedin-situ measurement of the atmosphere

The Ultimate in In-Situ Measurement of theAtmosphere. The Vaisala AVAPS MD11and Vaisala DropsondeRD93 represent the latestin dropsoundingtechnology with anonboard dropsondemicroprocessor andsynthesized digitaltransmission. Thiscombination offers themeteorologicalcommunity a completesolution for accurate insitumeasurement of theatmosphere.AVAPS stands for "Airborne VerticalAtmosphere Profiling System", amulti-channel GPS dropsoundingsystem that was developed by NCARand introduced in 1997 for hurricaneresearch and reconnaissance. TheVaisala Dropsonde RD93 is used withthe Vaisala AVAPS DropsondeReceiving System. Both products arelicensed by NCAR and have beenused on many missions in support ofoperational weather forecasting andatmospheric research. The Vaisala AVAPSThe Vaisala Dropsonde RD93measures and transmits pressure, temperature, relative humidity andwind data to the AVAPS receivingsystem at a high data rate. The AVAPSprocesses the data, displays it andstores it to the hard disk. The AVAPS system comprises:• A dropsonde launcherand control unit• UHF antenna for receivingdropsonde data and GPS antennafor receiving reference GPS data• A dropsonde telemetry chassis• A serial RS-232 interfacebetween the PC and thedropsonde telemetry chassis andother aircraft systems• A fan panel for cooling thedropsonde telemetry chassis• A PC with keyboard/mouse forprocessing and storing dataInstallation frame(optional)LCD flat paneldisplayKeyboard andtrackball mouseFan panel• Easy-to-use software for settingdropsonde parameters andreceiving data• A color monitor with screens forset-up, operation & data display• An optional printerIn the dropsonde telemetry chassis, each channel (up to 4) contains a GPSprocessor, a PTU buffer board and a400 MHz receiver. A dropsondeinterface card is used for checking thedropsondes and setting the telemetrytransmitter frequency before launch.A launcher is provided for safeejection from the cabin. The Vaisala AVAPS systemcomponents can be installed in astandard 19'' equipment rack withconnections to mains power, the UHFantenna and the GPS antenna.External aircraft data systems can beinterfaced through a RS-232 serial link. The Vaisala AVAPS is a generalpurposedropsonde receiving system, versatile enough for use in manydifferent kinds of aircraft. Employingthe Vaisala Dropsonde RD93 for windand PTU measurements, the AVAPSsystem architecture handles up to fourdropsondes descendingsimultaneously.Vaisala AVAPStelemetry chassisRack-mounted PCPrinter (optional)Vibration suppressionsystem (optional)

Main system featuresVaisala AVAPS main features:• Operates to an altitude of 24 km• Operates in both polar andtropical environments• Operated by one person• Four-channel data system allowsdense horizontal dropsondespacingVaisala Dropsonde RD93 mainfeatures:• Can be deployed at indicatedairspeeds up to 250 knots• Descent time: approx. 15 minfrom 14 km, 8 min from 7.5 km• 2 Hz sample rate for wind andthermodynamic data• Preparation time
