Film Properties<br />

and Processing: Synthalat <strong>ETH</strong> <strong>419</strong> is an epoxy ester modified with special vegetable fatty acids and int<strong>en</strong>ded<br />

primarily for the manufacture of zinc-rich paints. In this special-purpose paint Synthalat <strong>ETH</strong><br />

<strong>419</strong> serves as the sole binder. In addition, Synthalat <strong>ETH</strong> <strong>419</strong> can be used for air- and stovedrying<br />

primers with high water resistance and very good anti-corrosive properties.<br />

To prev<strong>en</strong>t sedim<strong>en</strong>tation in these types of systems the use of gel-forming additives such as<br />

b<strong>en</strong>tone or hydrated castor oil has proved effective. The amounts added are appr. 1% realtive<br />

to the total formulation for b<strong>en</strong>tone and appr. 0.4% for hydrated castor oil.<br />

Zinc-rich paints with Synthalat <strong>ETH</strong> <strong>419</strong> have a long shelf-life. In stability testing, accelerated<br />

tests (storage of the finished zinc-rich paint for 100 hours at 50°C) showed no undesirable<br />

changes. For dilution, aromatic hydrocarbons like xyl<strong>en</strong>e or solv<strong>en</strong>t naphtha give the best<br />

results. Aliphatic solv<strong>en</strong>ts should be avoided if possible.<br />
