They will be applicants who demonstrate the ability to undertake thedemand<strong>in</strong>g role of be<strong>in</strong>g a police constable. Successful candidates will undertake the full duties of a police officer; deal<strong>in</strong>g with localissues, build<strong>in</strong>g public confidence and help<strong>in</strong>g to keep <strong>Kent</strong> safe.As a police constable you will be responsible for the protection of life and property, the prevention and detection of crime and thema<strong>in</strong>tenance of public order through a range of sworn powers <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e with organisational standards.To be eligible to apply all applicants must:• Be a permanent resident <strong>in</strong> <strong>Kent</strong> at the time of application. Individuals currently <strong>in</strong> the armed forces should have plans to be a residentof <strong>Kent</strong> prior to be<strong>in</strong>g appo<strong>in</strong>ted as a constable.• Be a British Citizen or a citizen of a country that is a member of the European Economic Area. See list of EEA countries Appendix A.• Be aged 18 years.• Have achieved a standard of education of 5 GCSE’s at grade A-C <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g English and Maths (or equivalent). Please see list of eligiblequalifications Appendix B; Candidates with equivalent level qualifications are also eligible to apply as are serv<strong>in</strong>g Special <strong>Constable</strong>s andserv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Police</strong> Community Support Officers (PCSO).Equivalent level qualifications ga<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> the armed forces will also be considered.Whilst Special <strong>Constable</strong>s and <strong>Police</strong> Community Support Officers (PCSOs) are eligible to apply to be considered for this recruitmentcampaign, they may not progress to appo<strong>in</strong>tment until they have achieved <strong>in</strong>dependent patrol status as a Special <strong>Constable</strong> orcompleted their probationary period as a PCSO. At the end of each stage of the recruitment process you will be notified whetheror not you have been successful and therefore eligible to proceed to the next stage. Throughout the assessment it is very important that yourresponses are open and honest to ga<strong>in</strong> the most benefit from the questions. The assessment is broken down <strong>in</strong>to five different elements;however the first three of these are completed together at Step 1, dur<strong>in</strong>g the first week of the process.<strong>Kent</strong> <strong>Police</strong> will open access to each of the steps for a five day period. Protect<strong>in</strong>g and serv<strong>in</strong>g the people of <strong>Kent</strong>Step 1 – Registration, Realistic Job PreviewQuestionnaire, & Eligibility AssessmentTuesday 7 January – Monday 13 January 2014At the first step you will enter your personal details such as names,address, driv<strong>in</strong>g licence details and National Insurance number.The Realistic Job Preview will provide details on the role of a policeofficer. You will be asked to give your open and honest responsesto different situations. There is no right or wrong answer. At theend of the questionnaire, you will be given an overall rat<strong>in</strong>g of yoursuitability for the role of a police officer based on your responses.You can then make a decision if you would like to cont<strong>in</strong>ue withyour application.Step 2 – Behaviour Styles QuestionnaireTuesday 14 January – Friday 17 January 2014Candidates who are successful at Step 1 will be <strong>in</strong>vited, by email,to complete the Behaviour Styles Questionnaire. This step of theprocess asks you to <strong>in</strong>dicate to what level you either agree ordisagree with a number of statements. This part of the assessmentis a pass/fail and you will need to pass to progress to Step 3. A l<strong>in</strong>kto a feedback report will be provided with your result.Step 3 – Situational Judgement TestMonday 20 January – Thursday 23 January 2014On successful completion of Step 2 we will release access toStep 3, the Situational Judgement Test. This part of the processrequires you to consider the actions a police officer might takewhen <strong>in</strong> different operational situations. You will be asked toidentify the outcomes of the various actions as either effectiveor counterproductive. Aga<strong>in</strong>, you will need to pass this part ofthe process. A l<strong>in</strong>k to a feedback report will be provided withyour result and, if you have passed, you will be sent a l<strong>in</strong>k to oure-recruitment system to complete an application form.On completion of this step the Force will progress a limited numberof top perform<strong>in</strong>g candidates to stage 2 of the recruitment processand we reserve the right to vary the pass mark accord<strong>in</strong>gly.Due to the anticipated high <strong>in</strong>terest at this step of the processwe will only be able to progress top perform<strong>in</strong>g candidates to be<strong>in</strong>vited to undertake step 3.<strong>Becom<strong>in</strong>g</strong> a <strong>Police</strong> <strong>Constable</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Kent</strong> – Application process10


Protect<strong>in</strong>g and serv<strong>in</strong>g the people of <strong>Kent</strong>Stage 2 – <strong>Police</strong> SEARCH Process (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g fitness test)Upon successful completion of the Onl<strong>in</strong>e Registration and Assessment, applicants will move to Stage 2, which is the <strong>Police</strong> SEARCHassessment process. There are three steps to <strong>Police</strong> SEARCH; submit onl<strong>in</strong>e application, Competency Based Questionnaire (CBQ) mark<strong>in</strong>gand <strong>Police</strong> SEARCH Assessment Centre.<strong>Police</strong> SEARCH is a national process which is owned by the College of Polic<strong>in</strong>g. There is a wealth of material available on the College ofPolic<strong>in</strong>g website to assist applicants with their understand<strong>in</strong>g of the process and preparation for the day. <strong>Kent</strong> <strong>Police</strong> also run mandatorybrief<strong>in</strong>g events for Assessment Centre candidates which provide detailed <strong>in</strong>formation about the process <strong>in</strong> <strong>Kent</strong>.Please note each time the process requires you to visit police premises you will be required to provide photographic and other forms ofidentification. Failure to do so may mean that you will not be able to participate <strong>in</strong> the activity/assessment.Step 1 – Complete and Submit Onl<strong>in</strong>e Application FormFriday 24 January – Monday 3 February 2014<strong>Police</strong> recruitment for this stage will be via our e-Recruitment system, so applicants willneed an <strong>in</strong>ternet connection runn<strong>in</strong>g one of the follow<strong>in</strong>g browsers:• Internet Explorer 7• Firefox 3.6• Google Chrome 8e-Recruitment is generally not accessible on laptops, tablets, iPads, mobiles or Apple products.Unique l<strong>in</strong>ks to the e-recruitment system will be sent to all applicants who have beensuccessful at Stage 1. Applicants will need to register with the e-recruitment system and thencomplete their application onl<strong>in</strong>e. Applications must be fully completed and submitted by theclos<strong>in</strong>g date, midnight on Sunday 2 February 2014.Before complet<strong>in</strong>g your application form ensure you read the guidance notes and completeevery section. These forms must be returned as soon as possible <strong>in</strong> order to registercandidates for the Assessment Centre.Step 2 – Application form is short-listed (Competence BasedQuestionnaire mark<strong>in</strong>g)Tuesday 11 February – Monday 17 February 2014All correctly completed applications will be marked by a team of College of Polic<strong>in</strong>gaccredited assessors. Mark<strong>in</strong>g is carried out aga<strong>in</strong>st set criteria and applicants must passboth the Written Communication and the Competency Based Questionnaire (CBQ) sectionsof the form.<strong>Kent</strong> <strong>Police</strong> Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Centre will notify all applicants as to whether they have beensuccessful and provide feedback.Aga<strong>in</strong>, due to the high level of <strong>in</strong>terest we anticipate <strong>in</strong> this process, we will only progressa limited number of top perform<strong>in</strong>g candidates to the assessment centre phase. Somecandidates may be placed on hold at this step <strong>in</strong> the process should the numbers ofsuccessful candidates exceed the places available at our <strong>in</strong>itial assessment centre.Step 3 – Attendance at brief<strong>in</strong>g sessions and fitness testWednesday 26 February – Saturday 1 March 2014Candidates who are progressed to the assessment centre stage of the selection process willbe <strong>in</strong>vited to attend a brief<strong>in</strong>g session. <strong>Kent</strong> <strong>Police</strong> will hold 90 m<strong>in</strong>ute brief<strong>in</strong>g sessions, <strong>in</strong>Maidstone, to assist with preparation for the <strong>Police</strong> SEARCH Assessment Centre. Candidateswill also be required to complete the Job Related Fitness test at the brief<strong>in</strong>g event to ensurethat they meet the occupational fitness standards required for the role.Detailed <strong>in</strong>formation will also be provided about the assessment centre and the <strong>in</strong>-housesenior assessment process which follows.There will be presentations from the recruitment team and <strong>Kent</strong> <strong>Police</strong> Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Schoolteam as well as an opportunity to ask questions.<strong>Becom<strong>in</strong>g</strong> a <strong>Police</strong> <strong>Constable</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Kent</strong> – Application process12


Protect<strong>in</strong>g and serv<strong>in</strong>g the people of <strong>Kent</strong>Fitness testAll candidates will be subject to the job related fitness test. The testconsists of two elements, endurance fitness and dynamic strength.The requirement for the endurance fitness element is to run afifteen metre track <strong>in</strong> time with a series of bleeps (15 metre multistageshuttle run) which become <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly faster. You will berequired to run to level 3 as a warm up, and then to level 5.4 <strong>in</strong>order to reach the standard required. It is advised that you plan atra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g schedule to prepare.The dynamic strength is designed to test your upper body strength.You are required to push 34kg and pull 35kg on a Dyno mach<strong>in</strong>e.Step 4 – <strong>Police</strong> SEARCH Assessment CentreTuesday 24 March – Friday 28 March 2014<strong>Kent</strong> <strong>Police</strong> run the <strong>Police</strong> SEARCH Assessment Centre <strong>in</strong>-house atthe <strong>Kent</strong> <strong>Police</strong> Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g School complex <strong>in</strong> Maidstone.All candidates will need to attend for assessment dur<strong>in</strong>g the periodstated. Candidates who require reasonable adjustments shouldread the College of Polic<strong>in</strong>g guide <strong>in</strong> the first <strong>in</strong>stance. Reports willneed to be submitted to the <strong>Kent</strong> <strong>Police</strong> Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Centre by nolater than five calendar days prior to a candidates allocated brief<strong>in</strong>gevent date at the very latest, <strong>in</strong> order to allow sufficient time forsubmission to the College of Polic<strong>in</strong>g. Please note that reasonableadjustments cannot be provided unless authorised by the Collegeof Polic<strong>in</strong>g.The Assessment Centre consists of the follow<strong>in</strong>g activities:• four <strong>in</strong>teractive (role play) exercises• a twenty m<strong>in</strong>ute competency based <strong>in</strong>terview• two written exercises• numerical reason<strong>in</strong>g questionnaire• verbal logical reason<strong>in</strong>g testFull details of the Assessment Centre process and preparationmaterials are available on the College of Polic<strong>in</strong>g website, under<strong>Police</strong> Recruitment Standards. It is recommended that you read allof these materials before attend<strong>in</strong>g the Assessment Centre.Results will be sent out by the <strong>Kent</strong> <strong>Police</strong> Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Centre with<strong>in</strong>15 work<strong>in</strong>g days together with extensive feedback. Top perform<strong>in</strong>gcandidates will then be <strong>in</strong>vited to Senior Interview.As with other stages of the recruitment process we may vary theentry standard to ensure that an appropriate number of candidatesare progressed to the next stage of the selection process.Candidates will be <strong>in</strong>vited to an Assessment Centre to arrive ateither 8am or 1pm on one of the dates specified above. We will also checkyour partner’s children if they are agedover 10 years and any other adults whoreside at your address.F<strong>in</strong>ancial checks will also be carried outon all candidates. Those with outstand<strong>in</strong>gCounty Court Judgements (CCJs),Individual Voluntary agreements (IVAs)or who have been registered bankruptwill be rejected.
