Your Worst Enemy Can Be Your Best Friend by Dr Dina GloubermanI’d like tointroduce yoursecret weapon, theone that can turnyour worst enemyinto your best friend. When you are facingdifficult times of anykind, or just feeling stuck and knowing itis time for a change, you need all the goodfriends you can get – and, if possible, noworst enemies. You want people around who will do all thethings friends or advisers do at their best: Loveyou, show compassion if you’re in troublebut also remind you just how strong andwonderful you are, gently help you to stopdenying painful truths and to start being morehonest with yourself, point out your options, remind you of what you love and what you aregood at, encourage you to keep going, and justhelp in any way they can without trying totake over. You want people who will invite youto expand, to be the most you can be.You certainly don’t want people whocriticize you, blame you, tell you it’s all yourfault, make you feel hopeless and powerless, say that you might as well give up now.People like this are really pushing you tocontract, make yourself smaller and weakerand more powerless. But which worst enemy can also be yourbest friend?Your own imagination, of course.Your inner imagery has an amazing power, and it can work to support and guide you orto attack and hold you back; in fact, to do allthose things that good friends do, but alsothe things worst enemies do.So whether you’ve got friends or enemiesaround you in your life – or even when youfeel utterly alone – you’ve always got yourown imagination. Let’s make sure it is yourbest friend. That is what Imagework is all about.THE POWER OF YOUR IMAGINATIONYour deepest attitudes are held in the formof images or metaphors and your view ofthe future will similarly begin as a picture orstory or image that you may never questionand may not even be aware of. Theseimages, which often originate in very earlychildhood, can guide your mind, your body, your emotions, and your most basic attitudesto life. Yet, you may never know this ishappening. When does your imagination becomeyour worst enemy? Whenever it attacks you, worries you, frightens you, humiliates you, blames you, criticizes you, or threatens youwith some dire end you might come to – justlike a bullying worst enemy might do.10For example, have you ever laid awakeat night, terrified by what will happen toyou if you get too old, too ill, too damagedby Alzheimer’s, too poor, too lonely, toogrief-stricken by the loss of a loved one, orall of the above? Or do you have some otherhaunting fear?If you look closely you’ll discover that yourimagined picture of yourself should this orthat happen is of you looking collapsed, small,‘Whether you’ve got friendsor enemies around you inyour life – or even whenyou feel utterly alone –you’ve always got your ownimagination. Let’s makesure it is your best friend.’young, helpless or hopeless. It is your imageof yourself that is terrifying you more thanthe actual event. This is your imaginationattacking you and getting you to contract, tostay safe, to go back into your cave.Do you ever feel horribly humiliated as youremember a time in the past? Again, there’sa memory picture of some kind in there, even if you can’t see it right now, and it’s sopowerful that you are experiencing all thosefeelings all over again. On the positive side, do you ever feelconfident about the future? Do you have apicture or a sense of yourself feeling great, smiling happily and standing tall? This againis your imagination, being your friend, holding your hand, so that you feel safe evenwhen things look risky from the outside.BOOK FOR SHARING, MULTIBUY OFFER!YOU ARE WHAT YOU IMAGINE Dr Dina GloubermanFar from being just another self-help offering, this book goes forthe mark in a unique way. It will wake you up on levels you mayeven have forgotten are part of you. Dr Glouberman outlinesthree powerful steps to get you moving forward from a painful oruninspiring life to one that engages your enthusiasm and zest foreach day: the catalyst to jump-start your journey; the turning point– a bird’s-eye overview so that you can see round the corner fromyour present stuck situation; and the new beginning. She says, ‘Ifyou’ve ever seen the sun rise from the sea, you’ll understand themagnificence of the journey to a new beginning. Prepare for a greatadventure of your mind, body and soul that will astound you as youdiscover how vast are the possibilities of being you.’Order line: 01558 825 500 Query line: 01558 825 503Website: www.cygnus-books.co.uk Email: info@cygnus-books.co.ukTry this: Let yourself have one of those fear orhumiliation pictures, just for a moment, andsee what happens to your body, your breathing, your heartbeat. Now see yourself happy, whetherin the past or the present or the future. Stepinto that picture of you, and breathe intobeing this happy you. Now how does your bodyrespond? What happens to your posture? To yourbreathing? To your mood? Are you smiling? Doyou feel happier or lighter? Can you see howpowerful these imagined memories can be?Neuroscientists have discovered that whenyou see or do something in your imagination,it activates many of the same parts ofthe brain as when you are literally seeingsomething or doing something.YOUR HIGHEST PURPOSEYour imagery is real and has real effects. It makes sense that everything you want tolearn or do or achieve works better whenyou enlist the help of your imagination.Your imagination can help you solve mostdifficulties, for this is where the problems sooften begin. In other words, your imaginationis so central to your life that it’s worth puttingin a little effort to get it on your side.Wouldn’t it help to know a fast and easyway to gain access to your imagination, sothat you can hear the whisperings of yourheart and soul before they become shouts andget you into trouble? And to know that innerguidance is available from deep inside you todraw a map of the future that is in line withyour highest purpose and your greatest joy?And wouldn’t it be comforting to have yourimages holding your hand every step of theway so that you never feel out of touch withyour own inspiration and will? You can and you will. From You Are What You Imagine © 2014by Dr Dina Glouberman, published by Watkins Publishing256pp, 125mm x 197mm, softback, 2014, RRP £7.99Code: 240514, Cygnus Prices: 1 copy £5.99, 2+ copies £5.49 eachSave £4UNLOCKING YOUR MIND’S POTENTIALTHE REMEMBERINGPROCESS Joe Vitale& Daniel Barrett134mm x 215mm,208pp, softback,2013, RRP £12.99Code: 240515,Your Price: £8.99Personal problems? Your Second Brain by Irina MatveikovaSometimes peoplejoke about therebeing two brains: afemale one inside thehead and a male oneinside the trousers. Ifyou think that I’m goingto talk about this supposedsecond brain, then you’re mistaken. WhatI’m going to talk about is another brain – theone inside our digestive system. It is not asglamorous and as interesting as our sex drivebut can be just as wild and unpredictable –and we use it far more because our digestivebrain goes into action several times every day. It’s fair to say that the intestine, which isdivided into the large intestine and smallintestine, is not the part of our anatomy weare most passionate about, nor the one thatincreases our pulse rate. No famous poet haswritten an ode to it, and normally artists arenot inspired by the ‘beauty’ of the digestivesystem. Quite the opposite, in fact. Themost common view of the gut is that it is anugly body part that looks a bit like a snake, smells bad, and sometimes makes sociallyunacceptable and embarrassing noises. However, I promise you that we have a truesecond brain in our insides and its neuronalfunction is very similar to the brain in ourheads. Inside our bellies there is an extensivenetwork of neurons located between the twomuscular layers of the walls of the digestivesystem. Moreover, the structure of thesedigestive neurons is identical to that ofneurons in the brain: both produce similarchemical molecules – neuro-transmitters andhormones that are mostly necessary for ourintercellular communications and the correctfunctioning of the body.THE ENTERIC NERVOUS SYSTEMLet me introduce you to the entericnervous system (ENS), our ‘second brain.’This is not a metaphor; it is the officialname accepted by medical professionals. The importance of the ENS was onlydemonstrated relatively recently with thepublication of the work of Professor MichaelGershon, chairman of the Department ofAnatomy and cell Biology at ColumbiaUniversity, New York, and the forerunnerof the new science of neurogastroenterology. This new area of speciality studies thesymptoms of psychosomatic upsets that havea gastrointestinal expression and relates themto the central nervous system (CNS). Dr.Gershon has spent 30 years of his scientificcareer on an in-depth study of the attitudeand behaviour of the human gut, and he hasconfirmed that our nervous digestion systemhas its own cerebral activity and intelligence.14According to new data, the total numberof neurons found in the small intestineis around a hundred million. This figurerepresents a considerably higher number ofneurons than in the spinal cord, for example. The brain in our gut is the main productionline responsible for producing and storing thechemical substances called neuro-transmitters,most of which are identical to those foundin the central nervous system (CNS), suchas acetylcholine, dopamine and serotonin. These substances regulate our moods andour emotional and psychological well-being.They form a group of essential substancesensuring correct communication betweenthe neurons and the body’s warning system. They represent the ‘words’ in the neuronallanguage. The presence of such a wide varietyof neuro-transmitters in our intestines is aclear indication of the complexity of the richdigestive language and its ability to carryout neuronal functions and express its ownemotions.I can assure you that the relationshipbetween the two brains, which involveshormonal, metabolic, and emotionallevels, is very complex – we could even callit ‘intellectual’; it is also normally quitedemocratic and mutually respectful.EVOLUTION AND THE ANCIENT BRAINIn the earliest developments of the cerebralcortex, the mental activity of our ancestorswas more basic than ours today; it was guidedmore by instinct and intuition. Our distantrelatives listened to their guts and actedon the signals their intestinal brains sentthem. We ‘higher beings’, in contrast, havesuppressed the intuitive capacity in favour ofthe all-powerful guiding voice of our mindand conscience.Nevertheless, each of us from time to timehas a ‘gut feeling,’ a warning that comes fromdeep inside and appears in intense or extremeBOOK FOR SHARING, MULTIBUY OFFER!DIGESTIVE INTELLIGENCE Dr Irina Matveikovaemotional situations. It presents itself as awhole range of sensations, from a pleasurablethrill to a nervous knot, a hollow feeling, or apain. This is our intestinal brain talking to us.Poor brain. To attract our attention and goadus into action, it has to shout loudly using itsown ‘language’: bouts of diarrhea, spasms, ornausea. The intestinal brain has developedalongside its higher twin, growing in size, and increasing the diversity and quantity ofneurochemical substances produced. It hasperfected its control of the vital functions andadapted to the new demands and needs of thehuman body. This evolution continues today. After prolonged development, the entericnervous system has been transformed intosomething much more important than a mererelic of our ancestors: it is now a modernsystem that performs highly complex vitalfunctions without us having to make anymental effort or control its work.THE ENORMOUS HIDDENDigestive Intelligence tells the fascinating story of how our digestivesystems are really our bodies’ second brain and how we think and liveour emotions via our stomach. Dr Matveikova explains that the digestivesystem (equivalent to the size of a village football pitch hiding inside ourbellies!) contains more than one million neurons, identical to those inthe brain, and is responsible for producing 90% of the body’s hormone, serotonin, which makes us feel happy and full of wellbeing. It followsthat, if our stomach is ‘out of sorts’ we feel irritable and lacking in energy;and those feelings block our intellectual productivity, disorientate us andcompletely change our thought patterns and physical processes. Here isDr Matveikova’s advice on how to nurture our ‘second brain’ and get bothour brains working in powerful and creative harmony.POTENTIAL OF YOUR GUTWe have the internal mechanisms we needfor recovery and cure. Our body talks to usand warns us. If we could just decode itssignals and take notice of them, we would bemuch stronger and healthier. Our two brainsare both masters. They engage, talk, sabotage,or reinforce each other. It depends on the dayand the emotional and digestive situation. It has been shown that the digestivesystem has tremendous neurological andhormonal potential. This is why scientistsand the pharmaceutical industry are currentlydevoting so much of their research and testingto neurogastroenterology. The question is,therefore: How can we take advantage of thisvaluable resource and make the best use of itfor mental and digestive health? From Digestive Intelligence, ©2014 byIrina Matveikova, published by Findhorn Press.240pp, 152mm x 229mm, softback, 2014, RRP £9.99Code: 240520, Cygnus Prices: 1 copy £7.99, 2+ copies £7.49 eachOrder line: 01558 825 500 Query line: 01558 825 503Website: www.cygnus-books.co.uk Email: info@cygnus-books.co.ukCygnus Chat Page: Sharing Your Life Changing ExperiencesStar Letter: Life-Changing Guidance from the AngelsRecently I have been more open to on my time off over Christmas,my guardian angel’s signs: when spending time with my daughter; butI look back I can see what the signs deep down I was dreading going backwere.
