Volume 52, Issue 1GRAD NIGHT 2013To Senior Parents Class of 2013:DID YOU KNOW THAT statistically, graduation night is one of the most dangerous times in yourstudents’ young life? Our young men and women are at a higher risk of injury or even death fromdriving accidents, as well as physical/sexual assaults, and drug incidents. Even if they are not participatingin dangerous behavior, they could simply be in the wrong place, with the wrong crowd,at the wrong time.Troy’s Grad Night is a FUN and SAFE all-night party. This evening provides our students with onelast night with their classmates making many special memories that will last a lifetime. Grad Night isheld after graduates have had a chance to spend the afternoon and early evening with family and relatives,we check-in at the Troy north gym at 9:30 pm. Back by popular demand, we will be holdingour Grad Night Thursday June 13 th at an undisclosed Dave and Busters location. This event includes, bus transportation to and from, D&B loaded power card, unlimited dinner buffet, soft drinks, tea, coffee, breakfast buffet, billiard tables, shuffle board, unlimited non ticket games, plus other vendors and prizesto be announced.Parents, we are facing difficult economic times. With the costs of college applications, fees for this andthat before graduation, we want to hold down the ticket price. We hope that keeping the price at$125.00 until Feb. 28 th will help your student to be able to attend this memorable evening. Remember, the Grad Night event is NOT a school activity. The committee is made up of parent volunteers whoare giving many hours of their time to make sure this event happens. Please support us by volunteering, giving donations via gift cards, sponsor a child, etc. We especially need financial help to offset risingcosts with vendors and with transportation and to also offer some students with scholarships. Last year, Troy had 402 at the start of school, and this yearshows 425. Commander Allen Stubblefield, the senior NJROTC teacher at Troy, commented, “We havea strong, vibrant program that really sells itself to all students at Troy. We have tremendous supportfrom the superintendent to Mrs. Buchan, the staff and teachers at Troy. 400 cadets is quite a challengefor us, but our 50 seniors are looking forward to leading our regiment this year.”Troy NJROTC is expecting about 175 new cadets, including several upper class, to join our programfor the first time. Troy is looking for another successful year both on campus and in competitionswith our 11 different teams. Troy competed in 4 national level competitions in 2011-12 and continuedtheir string as state champions in both field meet competitions and academic brain brawls for 5consecutive years.16 SENIORS PICKED TO LEAD TROY NJROTC IN 2011-2012With a senior class this year of over 50 cadets, Troy NJROTC will offer 16 seniors the opportunityof hands-on leadership by taking the reins of Troy's NJROTC Regiment of over 400 cadets.Quarter Commanding Executive Chief of CommandOfficer Officer Staff Master ChiefSummer (May-Oct) Sydeny Soen Alan Nguyen Albert Song Amy StubblefieldFall (Oct-Dec) Joanna Chua Micah Tashima Norbert Kovacs Eunice KangWinter (Jan-Mar) Tae Ha Kim Khoi Nguyen You-Ree Lee Farid GhamsariSpring (May-May) Sean Lee Timothy Wong Jerry Xiao Power Lee8

Volume 52, Issue 1Troy NJROTCTROY TAKES 2 ND NATIONALLY IN ACADEMICSEarlier this summer, Troy’s team of seniors Sean Lee and Tae Ha Lee and juniors Maggie Wang and AnnieWang placed 2 nd in the Navy JROTC division of the College Options National Academics competition held atGeorge Mason University near Washington, DC. Troy won the online competition in 2010, and qualified for thisyear’s national event by competing in three online rounds earlier in the year.In Troy’s first appearance at the Washington DC competition, Troy was undefeated in the morning preliminaryrounds, where two teams went head-to-head answering questions on science, mathematics, English andsocial science. After lunch, Troy advanced all the way to the finals where they faced Moon Valley HS of Phoenix,AZ, their toughest opponent in the morning. Troy fell behind early, but came back and missed winning by onequestion.Sean Lee, Troy’s captain, commented, “We worked hard getting ready and had a great day competinguntil the final round. Moon Valley had a one player who was really sharp, but our team worked well together. We also had a great time seeing the historical sites in DC, including the capital, Naval Archives, Air Space museum,US History museum, Arlington National Cemetery and several monuments. Seeing the Declaration of Independence,Constitution and Bill of Rights all side by side was my highlight.”TROY CYBER TEAM GEEKS COMPLETES WEEK-LONG INTERNSHIPLast month, Troy’s cyber security team of senior Albert Song, senior Luke Lau, junior Matthew Sprengel, junior Michael Park, junior Ben Dillon, and sophomore John-Michael Linares, completed a one-week internshipat ESET North American headquarters in San Diego learning about computer security from the experts. Troy’steam earned the free week by winning the San Diego Mayor’s Cyber Cup last spring, dominating nine other Californiaschools in the finals.Cyber Security competitions like the San Diego Mayor’s Cyber Cup has opened the cadets’ eyes to thenumerous aspects of technology and its uses. As John-Michael Linares put it, "the San Diego Mayor's Cyber Cupwas incredibly challenging. We were the 'underdogs' of the competition and were immediately 'written off' bythe other teams." The competition itself had a "nice element of mystery to it because of the anonymous scoreboard,"said Ben Dillon. Noah Nam and Michael Park add, "Having each cadet specialize on one operating systemhelped us manage the multiple targets during the competition." Finally, Matthew Sprengel believed that practicingprior to the competition heavily really helped further our team's knowledge. This type of computer security competition really puts an emphasis on working together, cooperating tomeet team goals. The team always tries to keep an open mind and listen to advice while competing. Most of thecadets never expected to be able to use their computer talents for a high school competition. Ben Dillon said, "Itwas a really great experience to come together and compete against other teams."The week-long internship provided by ESET was a fantastic experience and really helped further each team membersexperience and knowledge. Troy is entering the CyberPatriot competition for the third straight year andhopes to be able to qualify for the Nationals next March in Washington, DC.9
