MESA IS COMMITTED TO EXPANDING AND ATTRACTING HIGHER EDUCATION PROJECTS THAT CREATE HIGH WAGE JOBS. HIGHER EDUCATION: AREA OF OPPORTUNITY The City’s economic development priorities are guided by Mesa’s targeted industries of opportunity: Healthcare, Education, Aerospace and Tourism. Propelled by Mesa’s strengths, quality infrastructure, talented workforce, projected growth and global market trends, the City of Mesa is already realizing significant achievements in each industry space. Commitment to Quality and Desire to Succeed Increasing educational opportunities and attainment for young adults and adults returning to college is a top priority for the City of Mesa. To achieve that goal, Mesa City Council is committed to expanding and attracting higher education and to developing quality projects that create high-wage jobs. The City of Mesa owns thousands of acres of land, new development and redevelopment sites and buildings inside and outside City limits. Several sites in Downtown Mesa are available for projects in, or related to, Mesa’s higher education initiatives. In fact, Mesa competes aggressively for projects that fit well in the downtown area and generate positive economic impact. With the addition of Metro Light Rail, the new Mesa Arts Center, the remodeled Mesa Convention Center and more than $500 million in planned investments in the next five years, Downtown Mesa is an attractive destination for students, faculty, businesses and residents. Mesa’s Light Rail is Enhancing the Downtown Core The arrival of METRO Light Rail in late 2008 ushered in a new era of transportation to Greater Phoenix. Recently, Mesa City Council approved a three-mile rail extension with four station locations in Downtown Mesa. Construction begins in 2013 and will be completed in 2016. City Utilities The City of Mesa owns and operates the water, wastewater, electric, gas, and trash utilities within Downtown Mesa and is willing to discuss attractive utility service plans for educational facilities in the downtown.
OUTSTANDING SCHOOLS The City of Mesa has a strong reputation for providing a well-educated, thoroughly trained workforce. In addition to the City’s public and private K-12 schools, including a K-9 Montessori school, a variety of post-secondary schools offer an array of career training choices and levels of expertise. K-12 SYSTEM – A STRONG FOUNDATION Mesa Public Schools (MPS) is the largest school district in Arizona and the 44th largest in the country. MPS is recognized nationally for its superb educational programs and student achievements in academics, sports, creative and performing arts, as well as technical and career training. Mesa boasts a new biotech academy and an advanced health sciences academy. • Mesa Public Schools conducts an Annual Senior Survey. 3,401 seniors responded in Spring 2010. Results indicate: o 94 percent plan further education with 85 percent planning to attend college immediately after high school. Of those, 69 percent indicated they planned to attend school full-time. o 79 percent plan to attend an Arizona school. o 71 percent plan on obtaining a four-year BA/BS degree. o 40 percent plan on obtaining a graduate degree. • For the past three years, America’s Promise Alliance named Mesa Public Schools as No. 1 in graduation rates among the nation’s 50 largest cities. MPS’ four-year graduation rate is 81 percent. (Source: AZ Department of Education) • U.S. News & World Report listed five MPS high schools in its 2010 report on America’s best high schools. • MPS graduates were offered more than $53 million in scholarships last year. • Mesa Public Schools, the nation’s 44th largest district with 66,500 students, was identified as one of only 21 districts that “beats the odds” by exceeding expected graduation rates by at least 10 percent.
