02 03Dear Fellow Parent,Many parents fret when their children reach two or three critical junctures of their education journey. Thistypically happens at PSLE, GCE ‘O’ Levels and then perhaps the more difficult choice of polytechnic educationor GCE ‘A’ Levels. This last decision is probably most difficult if your child has both options available.Understandably, parents want the best for their children. My wife and I are no different and had similarworries. As Sean was our eldest child, it was our first time.As parents, we wanted Sean to have a wholesome and balanced lifestyle in an education environmentthat would allow him to excel both in his studies and his chosen co-curricular activity – sailing. The learning environment had to be receptive to different learning styles and provide opportunitiesfor him to grow mentally and physically, where if he stayed focussed and passionate, wouldallow him to excel. We believed that Singapore Polytechnic, including other polytechnics inSingapore and the junior colleges, offered such opportunities. Our role was to show him education possibilities for his future, regardless of whether it wasa professional diploma or the GCE ‘A’ levels. This might not be easy for a young personmaking a potentially life-long decision. They could get distracted by peer influence, glitzybrochures and illusions of careers offering big bonuses. I think the challenge is to help themfind his or her true passion. We have three children - all three have now taken different pathways.Whichever pathway, in the long run, we believe their passion will guide and sustain theirindividual pursuits.Sean displayed strong love and excelled in sailing at national level from his primaryschool days. We took the bold but untested step to enroll him at the then newSingapore Sports School. It allowed him to pursue sailing and do his GCE‘O’ Levels. He eventually excelled with grades good enough to go to thebest junior colleges in Singapore. With his grades, we encouraged himto visit all the polytechnics, junior colleges and even the local universitiesto see what was on offer and to see which course of study appealed tohim. The idea was to help him see the longer term and not focus ondistractions offered at academic fairs. As a family, we shared his passionand longer term career goal, including wanting to sail at the AsianGames and hopefully someday, take part in the Olympics.Sean was quite clear in his mind that he wanted to go on to universityand pursue a career in accounting or finance. He believed goingto the polytechnic would give him a better head start. He eventuallyopted for the Diploma in Business Information Technology in SingaporePolytechnic as a launch pad to university to seek his passion. Duringhis time at SP, he did well enough in his studies and sailing to beawarded the prestigious Nanyang Scholarship at NanyangTechnological University for a double-degree in Accountancy andBusiness. We are very pleased with his progress. More importantly, Sean himselfis happy.Stanley and Michelle | Parents of Sean Lee Teik RenClass of 2011, Diploma in Business Information TechnologySingapore PolytechnicWhy I Chose SP“During my secondary school days in Maris Stella High, I already had a very clear visionwhat I want to do with my life. Maybe it was due to my upbringing. My father is a businessmanand he is my role model. From young, I always wanted to be an entrepreneur or work inthe financial sector. This is not the typical dream of a 16-year-old.Most of my school mates went to a junior college after their ‘O’ levels. I made the decisionto join a polytechnic, specifically, Singapore Polytechnic. It was a conscious and personalchoice. I had the grades to join a junior college. I reasoned with myself and others countlesstimes. I was pretty sure what I wanted to do with my life and the path that would best helpme achieve my goals was to join SP. I saw no reason to study humanities and sciences if Iwant to join the business world in future. My parents have always given me plenty of freedom and never failed to support me inwhatever decisions I made. In a way, that helped me tremendously when it came to decidingwhich polytechnic and which course I wanted to pursue because there was no parentalpressure.I chose SP’s Diploma in Business Administration as my first choice because I believedit would deepen my understanding of business fundamentals and strengthen myknowledge on how businesses are conducted. I wanted to be exposed to thedifferent aspects of business which include marketing, finance and human resource. But why a business course at SP? Besides the comprehensive business modules,it boiled down to two factors. SP carries the Singapore name and I find this tobe rather attractive when it comes to recognition. Secondly, SP is so accessible.I am now in my final semester. The journey has been simply awesome.I received more than the knowledge that I desired. Last semester, I tookpart in an international trade challenge and won the Singapore leg. Atthe international finals, my team came in second! Winning to me was abonus. More importantly, the experience has boosted tremendously myconfidence in public speaking and presentation. Then I went to Seattle in United States for a three-week Overseas CreditTransfer Programme at the University of Washington. Besides attendinglectures university style, we visited business bigwigs like Starbucks andMicrosoft. These visits really opened my mind to how political, economicand cultural differences can change the way a business operates.I am quite pleased with my progress so far; I did pretty welland getting to university would not be a problem. I plan toread finance or economics at the university. In the meantime,I am already hatching a business plan with my course mate. With SP, my future has become so possible!”Darren OngThird Year studentDiploma in Business Administration

20 21Let us Give Youan ExampleJack Tan has an aggregate score of ELR2B2 of 12 points. He is interested to do abusiness diploma in SP. Here are his top six choices.Choices Diploma Course COP (2011)1 st Choice SP - Business Innovation & Design New (No COP)2 nd Choice SP - International Business 83 rd Choice SP - Banking and Financial Services 114 th Choice SP - Accountancy 115 th Choice SP - Business Administration 126 th Choice SP - Financial Informatics 12His first choice is SP’s Diploma in Business Innovation and Design which does not havea COP because it is a new course. He stands a chance of getting into the course sincehis aggregate score is close to most of SP’s business courses’ COP.The rest of his choices are based on his interest in business. All applicants have a rankingin the JAE system. When it is his turn to be posted to a course and the system checksthat there are places available (in order of his choices), he will then be assigned a place. So if he did not try, he could have wasted an opportunity to get his dream coursebecause, remember, the published COP is 2011’s COP. The aggregate of the lastapplicant to be posted into a course determines the 2012 COP.Remember, the COP is only a guide as it dependson the performance of each cohort. If for example, there is one last place in the Diploma in Business Administration, Jackwould be given priority over another applicant with an aggregate score of 15 butputs this course as his first choice as selection is based on merit first than choice order.Making optimal use of the 12 choices:• Use COP 2011 as a guide• Do not rule out a course if your ELR2B2 is outside COP 2011• Rank your choices – course / institution• Include a course that you stand a good chance of getting into• Use your 12 choices wisely and realisticallyApplying under JPSAEI must make theRIGHT CHOICE!Let’s say Jack has done well in the business entrepreneurship competition. Or he is strongin a particular sport and is a member of the national team in tennis or dragonboat.Jack can also apply for the SP diploma courses that he likes and demonstrate to theselection panel his talents in these areas via his application in JPSAE even though hedid not meet last year’s COP. The JPSAE will open an additional door to help those withspecial talents or achievements to get their dream course despite not meeting the COP.

24 25FrequentlyAsked Questions (FAQs)About ExaminationsAbout AdmissionsWhat is the basis of selection in the Joint AdmissionsExercise (JAE)?Selection is based first on merit (which means your ELR2B2 aggregatescore) and then according to the line-up of choices as listed ineach applicant’s JAE submission. Applicants who have betteraggregate scores will have a better ranking and therefore a betterchance of getting their first choice course. How will the order of choices as listed determinewhether my child gets into a particular course? The way your child lists down his 12 choices indicates his preference.Hence your child will be allocated courses according to the oneshe has listed higher. Depending on his aggregate score (andhence, ranking, in order of applicants), your child will then beconsidered for each course, one by one, as listed in his order ofpreference. This means he will first be considered for his first choice, failing which it will be the second choice and so on.If my child lists a particular course, for example theDiploma in Biotechnology as his third choice, butanother applicant lists the same course as his firstchoice, will this applicant then take precedence overmy child for entrance to this course, despite havinga worse aggregate score than my child? No. Your child will still have precedence if his ELR2B2 aggregateis better (as you have mentioned) than the other applicant. Therefore,if your child is ineligible for entry his first and second choice ofcourses, he will be posted to the Diploma in Biotechnology as thisis his third choice (subject to vacancies). If the number of applicants is high for a particularcourse, will SP increase its intake?Whether SP increases its number of places depends on a numberof factors, not least of which is Singapore’s projected manpowerneeds as determined by the National Manpower Council. If my child does not have the minimum EnglishLanguage entry grade for the course he wants, canhe still apply for the course?Your child cannot apply for the particular course under the JAE ashe is not eligible. However, your child may apply through SP’sDirect Admissions Exercise (DAE), provided he fulfils the followingrequirements: he has scored distinctions in Mathematics and oneother subject; has a minimum ‘B’ grade for the relevant subject (asstated in the course entry requirements); and has a good aggregatescore. My child did not take subject ‘X’ in the ‘O’ levels, which is relevant to the course he is applying for. Will his chances of getting into this particular coursebe lower than those of applicants who have offeredthis subject? As long as your child meets the Minimum Entry Requirements, itmakes no difference which third subject he has taken in theexaminations. Is it possible for my child to change course afterstudying in SP for a few months?Your child cannot change course once the semester has started. We advise applicants to consider a course transfer before thesemester starts. Please note that applicants for course transfer areconsidered based on merit and subject to available vacancies. What is the Cut-Off Point (COP) of a course?COP for a course is the aggregate of the applicant who fills thelast vacancy of that particular course. For example, if the lastapplicant posted to a course has a ELR2B2 aggregate of 10, thiswill be the COP for the course. This means those before him eitherhave a better aggregate than him or similar. What is the likely COP for a particular course forthis intake? Each year’s COP depends on the number and quality of studentsapplying for each course and the corresponding number of coursevacancies. What are my child’s chances of getting into aparticular course if his aggregate score is higherthan the previous year’s COP for the course? We are unable to advise his chances of getting into the courseof choice. Even though your child’s aggregate does not meet lastyear’s COP, he should still list the course that he is very interestedin, as the top few choices. You never know what this year’s COPwill be! However, please advise your child to also include somecourses that he stands a good chance of getting in.Can my child use combined results?Yes, he may combine his GCE ‘O’ level results of any two years. How many examinations are there in a year? There are two semesters in a year and there will be an examinationat the end of each semester. There are also regular in-courseassessments as well as projects. For some courses, the studentsare assessed on projects instead of examinations. How does SP’s modular system help my child in hisstudies?Subjects are offered as modules. Upon completion of the modulein one semester, he will take an examination on the module. Akey benefit of SP’s modular system is that a student needs only torepeat a failed module instead of all subjects. This can be donethe following semester instead of waiting for one year. This systemallows flexibility and helps students pace their learning. How are excellent students recognised in SP?Students who performed well are recognised in the Director’sHonour Roll. There are also prizes and awards given to topstudents every year, either by SP or by external companies andorganisations. Every year, SP also honours achievers at the annualExcellent Student Awards.About Student LifeHow long is each semester? The new academic session begins in April. There are two semestersof 15 weeks each. There is a short mid-semester break of two tothree weeks in June and December and a semester vacation offour to six weeks in September - October. How much time do SP students spend on campuseach day?As a tertiary institution, the timetable is flexible. There are nostructured classroom lessons like in secondary school. Instead, students move from lecture theatres to tutorial rooms or fromlaboratories or workshops to classrooms. The first lecture of theday may begin at 8am and most classes end by 6pm. In between, there may be stretches of free time for students to read up on theirwork. Many of our students remain in campus after classes forsports, student club programmes and other recreational activities.Where can my child go for advice on choice of courseand career?SP will soon set up the Inspiring Careers and Further EducationCentre (iCaFE) located T16 level 1, just a short walk away fromthe Dover MRT Station. It provides information on SP courses andentry requirements, local and overseas university brochures, accreditation database, career information and job vacancies. Our qualified staff will guide you in making an informed course/ career choice. You can also email your queries to ssc@sp.edu.sg.Are there any opportunities for overseas exposure? There are plenty of opportunities for SP students to travel overseasfor educational, recreational, immersion or community service. These opportunities are not confined to any particular course ofstudy and could arise from various organised groups includingSP’s student clubs, and even external, national or internationalbodies. For instance, there are exchange programmes to countries likeJapan, Korea, and Thailand; overseas immersion and credit transferprogrammes in China, Finland and United States, and communityservice programmes in Vietnam and Philippines. We have sentour students for international competitions to cities such as Bangkok,London and Berlin.Under the SP’s Credit Transfer Scheme and Overseas IndustrialProgramme, students have wonderful opportunities to broadentheir educational experience in Asia, Europe and United States. Is sport or physical education a must in SP?Every student is strongly encouraged to take part in sports andoutdoor activities. If your child is not involved in any SP sportsteam, he can still have variety of instructional sports electives likeaerobics, canoeing, jogging, squash, tennis and swimming tochoose from. These activities count towards his Co-CurricularActivities (CCA) points. There is also the NAPFA test which iscompulsory for all final-year students. This also applies to those whohave completed National Service and female students. SP will rollout a compulsory Physical Education programme from 2012.About FeesWhat is the tuition fee like?A student’s full-time education is subsidised by the Government ofSingapore. However, to help students pay part of the trainingcost, the government, through the Ministry of Education, providestuition grants to all full-time students. The current tuition fee for Singaporean full-time students is $2,277.The tuition fees and tuition grant are subject to revision every year.Fees for academic year 2012-13 are not available at the timeof printing. What if a student has financial difficulties?Various financial assistance schemes such as scholarships andbursaries, tuition grant schemes, tuition fee loan scheme, studyaids, Mendaki tuition fee subsidy etc are available to full-timestudents. Students can visit the Student Service Centre at T16 level2 or call 6772-1707 or call 6870-8220 to make an appointmentto see the officer-in-charge of financial assistance.
