Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time June 17, 2012PASTOR’S SHARINGDuring the civil rights movement of the 1950s and1960s, Americans shone the light of the Gospel on adark history of slavery, segregation, and racialbigotry. The civil rights movement was anessentially religious movement, a call toawaken consciences. In his famous “Letter from Birmingham Jail” in1963, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. boldly said, “Thegoal of America is freedom.” As a Christian pastor,he argued that to call America to the full measure ofthat freedom was the specific contribution Christiansare obliged to make. He rooted his legal andconstitutional arguments about justice in the longChristian tradition: “I would agree with SaintAugustine that ‘An unjust law is no law at all.’… Ajust law is a man-made code that squares with themoral law or the law of God. An unjust law is a codethat is out of harmony with the moral law.”Some unjust laws impose such injustices onindividuals and organizations that disobeying thelaws may be justified. Every effort must be made torepeal them. When fundamental human goods, such as the right of conscience, are at stake, we mayneed to witness to the truth by resisting the law andincurring its penalties. The church does not ask for special treatment, simply the rights of religious freedom for allcitizens. Rev. King also explained that the church isneither the master nor the servant of the state, butits conscience, guide, and critic.Catholics and many other Americans have stronglycriticized the recent Department of Health andHuman Services (HHS) mandate requiring almostall private health plans to cover contraception, sterilization and abortion-inducing drugs. For thefirst time in our history, the federal governmentwill force religious institutions to fund and facilitatecoverage of a drug or procedure contrary to theirmoral teaching, and purport to define which religiousinstitutions are “religious enough” to merit anexemption. This is a matter of whether religiouspeople and institutions may be forced bythe government to provide such coverageeven when it violates our consciences. What we ask is nothing more than the right to followour consciences as we live out our teaching. Thisright is not only about our ability to go to Mass onSunday or pray the Rosary at home. It is aboutwhether we can make our contribution to the commongood of all Americans. Can we do the good worksour faith calls us to do, without having to compromisethat very same faith? Without religious libertyproperly understood, all Americans suffer, deprivedof the essential contribution in education, healthcare, feeding the hungry, civil rights, and socialservices that religious Americans make every day. What is at stake is whether America will continueto have a free, creative, and robust civil society—orwhether the state alone will determine who gets tocontribute to the common good, and how they getto do it.3

This is in order tokeep their costs down as they travel to different collegecampuses in order to spread the word against abortion. The Corpus Christi Knights of Columbus coordinated withour parish youth ministers and Fr. Hoorman to ask ifthey would like to have JFA speak to them aboutabortion and the Knights would feed them dinner. As David Lee, the president of JFA, spoke at the dinner,he showed a presentation that JFA uses as a teachingtool. All teenagers eyes were glued to the presentationand their ears hung on every word. The teenagerslearned more about what abortion is and why it iswrong. They asked questions and at the end of thepresentation it was clear that these teenagers willchoose life over death of an innocent child. Many of the teenagers asked how they could helpspread the pro-life message. Since there were about 20JFA members in attendance for dinner, they wereavailable to help answer questions from the youth.…The Youth Service and Pro Life plaques wereawarded by the Arizona State Knights of Columbusto the Corpus Christi Knights of Columbus recognizingthem for the top programs in the state for the2011-2012 Fraternal Year.

It is about whether we can make ourcontribution to the common good of all Americans. Can we do the good works our faith calls us to dowithout having to compromise that very same faith?”the bishops ask.Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson answers:“this question must be of utmost concern to everyCatholic and especially to the Knights of Columbus. In the days ahead we will increase our efforts toshield the Church from the heavy hand of those whoseek to restrict what Pope Benedict XVI has called‘That most cherished of American freedoms, thefreedom of religion.’”6www.corpuschristiphx.orgSaint Gerard CircleSt. Gerard Circle is an active ministryfor mothers at Corpus Christi.
