Volume XIV, Issue 4January, 2011K EEPING IN TOUCHMARTY VANH ULLE,PRINCIPALewaukee High School is committed to maximizingthe academic potential of ALL studentswhile fostering an environment of positive studentcitizenship. We all know that just like some adults, some kids can be mean. It sure seems, however, likethere are a lot more verbal “sticks and stones” being cast these days. I wonder if this is becausewe are simply more aware of these issues or if in fact we are just becoming meaner as a society?Hopefully it’s not the latter.IMPORTANT DATESJanuary 17Senior Class GraduationOrders during lunchesI have no doubt that technology has made it significantly easier for individuals to spew hatefulspeech. Be it the anonymity of not having to face your “target” or because groups of “FacebookFriends” can join in on the conversation, bullying is easier to accomplish and can be done in“public” venues for many to see. Long gone are the days when a singular note was written forjust the “victim” to view.January 18 - 20January 201st Semester Exams(see article on page 6)Winter Band Concert7 PM, auditoriumWe have always prided ourselves on having great kids and have worked very hard on the citizenshipportion of our mission. Our daily “Words of Wisdom” are intended to send positivemessages to students and the staff at PHS are excellent role models, consistently displaying appropriateand respectful behavior. We’d be extremely naïve, however, if we believed that bullying wasn’t occurring within thewalls of our building or by our students when they exit the building for the day. To that end,Associate Principal, Danielle Bosanec, has done a terrific job in organizing an Anti-BullyingCommittee (ABC) to raise awareness about the harmful effects of bullying and to implementprograms at PHS to help combat unkind and hurtful behavior. The ABC is an eclectic group ofstudents who have experienced both sides of bullying. I encourage you to look for more informationin our next newsletter regarding activities and events being planned for February 23.Yesterday’s “Words of Wisdom” included the following Arab proverb: “The sword wounds thebody, but unkind words wound the soul.” It behooves all of us, adults and students alike, toensure we are engaging in kind, compassionate and respectful behavior. Always remember thatwhile sticks and stones break bones and swords wound bodies, it is the wounding of the soul thatsometimes takes the most time to heal. Unfortunately for some, these soulful wounds neverheal.FREE-THROW-A-THON RAISES $$$The girls basketball program recently held a 2nd Annual Free-Throw-A-Thon to again helpraise money for its program, but more importantly, to help the Pewaukee Food Pantry. The girlswere asked to get pledges on their 200 free-throw attempts. Sponsors could donate a certainamount per free throw or make a straight donation. After all the money had been collected, the girls program presented the food pantry with a checkfor just over $2,500 a week prior to Christmas. Add the nearly $3,800 that was raised last yearand the girls basketball program has donated over $6,300 the past two years to this worthycause. The girls did a wonderful job with this opportunity to help the community and the donationcame at a great time during the holiday season when others are much less fortunate than we are.January 21 End of Quarter 2Early Release, 10:45 AMFebruary 7 Open Enrollment BeginsFebruary 19 Winter Ball 7—11 PMFebruary 22 Pewaukee ScholarshipFund Applications dueParent/Teacher Conferences4 - 7:00 PMFebruary 23 Early Release Day10:45 AMFebruary 24 & 25 NO SCHOOLMid-Winter BreakMarch 15 Spring Choir Concert7:00 PM, auditoriumMarch 18 & 19 Play - “Robin Hood”7:00 PM, auditoriumMarch 20 Play - “Robin Hood”2:30 PM, auditoriumMarch 25 End of Quarter 3Early Release, 10:45 AM
