a special volunteer hospitalized the weekend of the tournament… 

Those are just a few of the special 

moments that have been part of the Coastal 

Classic Celebrity Golf Tournament. 

Although the celebrities and the activities 

of the weekend make the event fun for 

players, guests and gallery members, the 

beneficiaries of the tournament give it 

purpose. Organized by the New Hanover 

Regional Medical Center Foundation, the 

tournament has contributed nearly $1.4

of projects the NHRMC Foundation has funded.

1993 & 1994- Easy Street at Coastal Rehabilitation Hospital 

Unique rehabilitation environment is created so patients can experience and 

learn to deal with the physical and cognitive challenges of everyday life 

in realistic settings. Over 10,500 patients have utilized these services since 

opening! 

1995- Cardiac Rehabilitation Program 

Patients with heart disease or known risk factors participate in monitored 

exercise sessions, dietary counseling, stress management techniques and 

ongoing educational programs. 

1996- Pediatric Department 

A 26-bed Pediatric Unit is designed and dedicated to the care of sick 

children and adolescents. 

1997- Coastal Care Van (Zimmer Cancer Center) 

The mobile cancer detection unit brings health education and screenings to 

people throughout Southeastern North Carolina. It has provided cancer 

screenings for more than 8,000 people since April 1998, many of whom would 

otherwise have had no access to these services. 

1998- Coastal Consumer Health Library 

Located in the main branch of New Hanover County Public Library, it’s 

designed to help people find the health information they need for themselves 

or a loved one.

1999- Visual Therapy for Cancer Patients (Zimmer Cancer Center) 

Providing specially designed and installed photographs to help soothe and 

comfort patients while undergoing cancer treatment in the Zimmer Cancer 

Center. The Zimmer Cancer Center has had over 56,000 patient visits. 

2000- Neonatal Intensive Care Unit 

One of 12 such units in the state, it provides care to our region’s most 

critically ill and premature newborns. 

2001- Coastal Heart Center 

Provides aid through cardiac patient treatment, community outreach, cardiac 

and pulmonary rehabilitation and preventive education. 

2002 & 2003 

Changed from a sole beneficiary to giving donors a choice. Donors and 

Sponsors designated to a variety of funds, the majority of which chose 

Women’s & Children’s, Cancer and Heart programs. 

This Year’s Tournament 

The 2004 Coastal Classic Celebrity Golf Tournament will provide funding 

for the Pediatric Care Program at the Medical Center. This includes the 

development of a Level II Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Currently there are ten 

PICUs in North Carolina, but because of the vast size of our state, there is 

a need to have a PICU to serve the young people of our region in the Southeast. 

With the population of children newborn to 19 years old growing steadily, the 

absence of regional intensive care services for pediatrics is noticeable by all 

who are in need of specialized pediatric medical services. Providing the right 

level of care comes first on the Medical Center’s list of priorities, followed by 

the need to supply a clear choice to parents who are seeking medical care for 

their children.

2004 Coastal Classic Celebrity Golf Tournament Events 

Friday’s Pairings Party: 

Join us in the VIP tent at Landfall’s Pete Dye Golf Course for cocktails, 

dinner and celebrity entertainment. Players will meet their teammates and 

the celebrities. 

Saturday Evening with Dinner & Auction: 

Our celebrity guests will entertain you during an evening in the VIP tent with 

dinner and live and silent auctions. 

Hospitality Room: 

Take time to meet and mingle with celebrities and your teammates in the 

tournament hospitality room located at our host hotel Landfall Park Hampton 

Inn and Suites. 

Tournament / VIP Tent: 

Enjoy a walk along the Pete Dye Golf Course or stop in the VIP tent for 

refreshments and to collect celebrity autographs in your tournament program 

or to pick up tournament merchandise as a memento of the weekend. 

Captain’s Choice format on Saturday and Sunday with five member teams. 

Shotgun start at 9 AM. No golf professionals are eligible to play. 

The Pete Dye Golf Course at Landfall 

The superb 18-hole championship Pete Dye Golf Course is considered one of 

the best courses in North Carolina. The Dye course offers A1/A4 Bentgrass 

greens, Tifway II Bermuda grass fairways and provides a mixture of targets 

framed by views of the Intracoastal Waterway.
