Inland Empire Latino Lawyers Associationby Rina GonzalesThe Inland Empire Latino LawyersAssociation (“IELLA”) is a legal aidproject that started in the late 1970s.The founding members <strong>of</strong> IELLAwanted to give back to their communityby providing legal aid to indigentresidents. For the past 28 years, thefounders’ primary goal – providingaccess to the judicial system througha pro bono attorney panel – has beenrealized on a weekly basis.Currently, IELLA operates clinicsevery week in <strong>Riverside</strong> and Colton.Monthly clinics are held in Ontarioand Victorville. Any individual whomeets IELLA’s eligibility criteria isprovided with counsel, advice, andthe preparation <strong>of</strong> necessary legaldocuments; all <strong>of</strong> these services areprovided free <strong>of</strong> charge. IELLA assistsclients in family law, landlord-tenant,and limited civil cases (e.g., collections,identity theft).The volunteer attorney panelincludes attorneys from the <strong>Riverside</strong>and San Bernardino <strong>County</strong> <strong>Bar</strong>Associations. A large number <strong>of</strong>attorneys on the panel volunteer oncea month, for approximately two tothree hours. The clinic staff and seasonedattorney volunteers welcomeany new attorneys wanting to becomepart <strong>of</strong> the volunteer panel. ManyIELLA clients are Spanish-speakers,but this should not discourage potentialvolunteers – IELLA has translatorsavailable at every clinic to assistnon-Spanish-speaking attorneys.IELLA’s clinics are held at the followingtimes and locations:Mondays – 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.Lawrence Hutton CommunityCenter660 Colton Av., ColtonWednesdays – 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.César Chávez Community Center2060 University Av., Suite 113,<strong>Riverside</strong>Second Thursday <strong>of</strong> each month– 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.De Anza Community Center1405 S.
