These programmes provide you with the opportunity to experience student life in a 

foreign country, pick up a new language, experience different cultures, overcome 

novel challenges, make new friends and ultimately become global citizens. Open

Programme (SEP)

About SEP 

The Student Exchange Programme (SEP) is an 

academic programme in which NUS students 

spend a semester or two at an overseas partner 

university, earning credits towards their NUS 

degree. It is an opportunity to experience student 

life in a foreign country, pick up a new language, 

and be immersed in a different culture. Students 

can choose from over 300 top universities in 40 

countries for their exchange destination and can 

go to university wide partner universities (open to 

all NUS students) or faculty-level partner universities 

(open to students in a particular faculty only).

Eligibility & Application Process 

All full-time undergraduate students in NUS are eligible 

for overseas SEP, except for: 

• Students who are scheduled for their final-year 

projects or internships/industrial attachments (unless 

approved by the faculty/department) 

• Students in their final semester of study (unless 

approved by the faculty/department) 

• Certain local or foreign nationals receiving 

scholarships financed or administered by the Ministry 

of Foreign Affairs and other sponsors with restrictions 

on overseas study (unless exceptional approval has 

been granted) 

Foreign nationals are also not allowed to apply for SEP in 

partner universities that are located in their home country. 

Students may be of any nationality, although priority will 

be given to Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents. 

Students must fulfill the following requirements: 

• Complete at least one semester of study at NUS upon 

application, and two semesters upon admission to 

the partner university 

• Attain a Cumulative Average Point (CAP) of 3.0 on the 

5-point scale, and no ‘C’ grade (grade point of 2.0) in 

any module (at the discretion of faculty/department) 

• Possess adequate financial resources to support 

living expenses throughout the duration of SEP 

(approximately SGD 5,000 - 15,000 per semester, subject 

to differing costs of living in exchange destinations) 

Essential Guide to International Programmes 

Despite coming from completely different cultures and 

various corners of the world, it was truly amazing how we 

managed to get along so well and enjoy each other’s 

company on our travels. It was extremely interesting 

learning about different cultures, from simple things like 

dining etiquette to deeply rooted cultural attitudes.

Financing Your SEP 

Students must ensure that they have 

the financial means to support living 

costs during their SEP overseas. The cost 

of living varies from country to country 

and between different cities in the 

same country. Students will continue 

to pay NUS tuition fees during their SEP 

overseas and are not required to pay 

tuition fees to the host university. 

As NUS is committed to a need-blind 

merit-based admission policy, the IRO 

is also committed to assisting students 

identify suitable programmes and 

funding for their overseas experience. 

A number of financial assistance 

schemes are available to students 

to facilitate and encourage their 

participation in the SEP.

About i-SPs 

In addition to regular semester exchange 

programmes, NUS students are encouraged to 

embark on unique academic immersions such as 

summer programmes. These programmes offered 

by NUS’ partner universities are generally held 

during the academic break between May and 

August each year to destinations in the Americas, 

Asia and Europe. Summer Programmes allow 

students to explore non-traditional destinations, 

and to cultivate a deeper appreciation of the 

culture and lifestyle of the host country through

Mayan Route is the perfect programme if you want to study and learn 

about a new culture, travel the country as well as expand your circle of 

friends. I was also amazed that I was able to pick up simple Spanish in

About International Internships (i-Intern) 

To prepare NUS students for the demands 

of an increasingly globalized economy and 

interconnected international community, IRO 

offers international internships (i-Intern) for students 

to expand their knowledge and hone their skills in 

a cross-cultural workplace setting. Working and 

living for 2-5 months in various locations around 

the world, students are exposed to international 

best practices at the workplace and career 

development opportunities in diverse industries, 

including finance, engineering, retail, government, 

media/PR, health-care and non-profit. 

About International Research 

Attachment Programmes (i-RAP) 

IRO offers the opportunity for students to broaden 

and enhance their undergraduate research 

experience through attachments under the 

mentorship of top researchers at universities 

renowned for science and technology. Students 

will have the chance to live in another culture,

TF LEaRN

About the TF LEaRN Programme@NUS 

Funded by Temasek Foundation, the Temasek 

Foundation Leadership Enrichment and Regional 

Networking (TF LEaRN) Programme@NUS, aims 

at grooming NUS students and select inbound 

exchange students from ASEAN and Asia to be 

the next generation of Asian leaders. Students 

participate in the semester-long Student Exchange 

Programme (SEP) between NUS and its partner 

universities. In ASEAN and Asia, and are immersed 

in activities that develop their leadership potential, 

promote their involvement in community work and 

encourage inter-cultural interaction and networking. 

The TF LEaRN Programme@NUS is funded through the 

generosity of the Temasek Foundation. Each inbound 

student receives an award of up to S$ 6,000. Each 

NUS outbound student going to ASEAN and India 

receives an award of up to S$ 5,000. Those going to 

China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong 

receive an award of up to S$ 4,000.

About the Sino-Singapore 

Undergraduate Exchange Programme 

The Sino-Singapore Undergraduate Exchange 

Programme (SSUE) programme is a prestigious 

programme spearheaded at the governmentlevel 

by the respective Ministries of Education 

of both Singapore and China. It aims to instill in 

Singaporean students a global perspective and 

understanding of China and its potential, and to 

expose Chinese students to aspects of Singapore 

life, education and culture. The programme is 

held over 2 legs – the first in Singapore (March), 

followed by a trip to China (May).

Although previous participants had forewarned me that SSUE was going to be a 

life-changing experience, I always maintained a veneer of healthy skepticism. 

But oh-boy were they right! From famous landmarks such as the Great Wall of 

China, to a simple dinner at a Chinese student’s humble home, the 9th SSUE 

was truly amazingly-fantastically-astonishingly-exceptionally mind-blowing. It 

definitely ranks as one my most memorable overseas exchange programmes!

About Yale Visiting International 

Student Program 

The Yale Visiting International Student Program 

(Y-VISP) is an honors program at Yale University, 

designed for undergraduates from partner 

institutions. Selected students will join the Yale 

undergraduate community for a full academic 

year (junior year), enroll in Yale undergraduate 

courses and live with Yale students in one of 12 

residential college communities.

If I were to sum up my learning experience at Yale in a word, it would be 

“self-realization.” This is the epistemological process of clarifying your own 

inchoate beliefs and ideas through doing and being. This is akin to the creative 

process of a painter. A painter does not merely recreate the idea in his mind 

but rather, through the process of painting, the painter begins to see his own 

idea take shape and understand himself better. I often feel like the painter at 

Yale. Through the process of writing, debating and engaging with other Yale 

students, I clarified my own beliefs and realized some deep-seated assumptions 

that I never thought I held. This self-realization process makes me understand 

myself better: I learned about myself at Yale.

The Y-VISP is a journey that has brought me through 

the most exciting and defining experiences of my life 

- from interacting with students from the most diverse 

backgrounds, taking classes by world-renowned 

professors, to being part of the residential college 

community. Most importantly, I have been able to 

pursue my passion in the performing arts by joining the 

Yale Glee Club and embarking on singing tours across 

the country. I have grown in ways unimaginable by 

being in constant interaction with motivated and 

bright students, and having access to the wide range 

of opportunities available at Yale.

Yale provided me with the brilliant opportunity to take half a 

dozen classes whose descriptions would be absolutely wildsounding 

in NUS. In the course of two semesters, I scrutinized 

Van Goghs and Edward Hoppers in Yale’s Art Gallery, built 

a movable cardboard toy my height, painted nudes twice 

a week, and conducted an independent painting project 

under the supervision of Yale School of Art faculty. I also 

had a wonderful academic advisor, Professor Alfred Guy 

who not only gave excellent advice on module shopping, 

but who was also genuinely interested in my personal life, 

beliefs, and way of looking at the world.
