Time dilation effect on GPS satellites 14The time dilation effect is taken intoaccount every day to help keep the atomicclocks on the 24 Global PositioningSystem (GPS) satellites that encircle theEarth in sync with Earth-based atomicclocks.Since the satellites are moving relative tothe atomic clocks that are on the groundthey have dilated time intervals. The GlobalPositioning System requires that thesatellite clocks be coordinated to a veryhigh accuracy.This is absolutely necessary to predictwhere the location is of people using theGPS receivers on the Earth's surface. Eventhough the special relativity effect is veryvery small, the atomic clocks are accurateenough to be affected by the time dilationeffect.
