Nevertheless, weare blessed in this country that thefounding spirit and purpose ofpolicing (inspired by Bury-bornrobert Peel) still works for the benefitof society.it is disgraceful when, called toemergencies, the police - and fireand rescue, and ambulance officers- are sometimes attacked.in recognising such perils theyencounter (with a decreasing numberof officers - the likely outcomeof austerity cut-backs), we shouldhold Greater Manchester’s police, fire and rescue, and ambulance services, regularly in our public andprivate prayers.in this remembrance month letus thank God for the men andwomen of the civilian and armedforces who put themselves at riskfor us – especially those who havebeen injured or lost their lives onour behalf.New staff forChurch HouseThe Revd Stephen Tranter has joined the diocese asLocal Ministry Officer. Stephen was Hospital Chaplainin the Morecambe Bay Teaching Hospitals NHSFoundation Trust and House for Duty Priest in Ellel, StJohn and Shireshead St James, Blackburn. We have also been joined by Colin Barson, the newParish Development Officer.Colin has had a varied career in local councils, thepolice force, as a training officer and lecturer and latterlyas CEO of Voluntary and Community Action Trafford. He has been involved in a number of initiatives withinthe diocese at parish level and sits on the PovertyCommission.CRUX also welcomes the Revd Julia Babb whotakes up the post of Diocesan Clergy Training Officer inDecember.Currently Rector of the Whittington Benefice inDerby Diocese, Julia previously served as an incumbentin Newcastle Diocese and curate of Langley andParkfield in Manchester. She has been involved in initial training and as atraining incumbent in both Derby and Newcastle diocesesand is working towards a doctorate from ChesterUniversity. ZZZ M(a)-CRUX.NOV.12_z/CRUX.M/APR.05 23/10/2012 16:13 Page 88 November 2012‘THIS IS CHRIST’S BODy, THIS IS CHRISSharing in the joy andof the EucharistTHERE can be few more intimate moments in aservice of the Eucharist (Holy Communion orMass) than that moment when each member ofthe congregation comes forward to the altar toreceive the bread and wine.It is a profound moment of grace and humilityas each Christian disciple meets with the brokenChrist in a tangible way and receives the spiritualfood that will strengthen and sustain him or herin all that lies ahead. It is also a profound moment of self-offering:each of us coming to kneel, as we are, with allour faults and failings, in all our weakness andbrokenness, to give ourselves afresh to the onewho calls us.For those of us who administer the elementsthen, there is joy, responsibility and a right senseof privilege as we distribute, in Christ’s name, the ‘bread for his body, wine for his blood’.Practically, we are sharing out the bread andwine among the gathered community. Spiritually,we are handling holy things that have been consecratedand set apart, through which each personencounters the living God.Eucharistic Assistants are those who share, with the clergy and Readers, in this importantministry. Of necessity, they are people who aretrustworthy and are in good standing in their congregation. They are people who can allow themselvesto be used by God as channels of his gracewithout getting in God’s way.To become a Eucharistic or CommunionAssistant is to share in one of a whole raft ofministries that is open to the laity. But because of the particular responsibilitythat Eucharistic Assistants have, they are nominatedto the Bishop by their incumbent and PCCas well as being trained by their clergy for therole that they are taking on.Some Eucharistic Assistants will also be nominatedto take out communion to the sick andhousebound. This requires additional training andCRB clearance so that proper safeguards are seento be in place for those who are particularly vulnerablein our communities. If you feel called to such a ministry, there isnothing to prevent you from offering yourself toyour parish priest and PCC. Equally, PCCs andclergy should regularly review who else in theircongregation might fulfil this role in a way thatblesses God’s people at that moment ofencounter.Cherry Vann – Archdeacon of RochdaleThe archdeacons will be leading teaching andtraining evenings in the context of holyCommunion at four venues across the diocesein November. These evenings are for peoplewho are considering becoming eucharisticAssistants and would like to know what’sinvolved, as well as for new and experiencedeucharistic Assistants.See back cover of this issue of CRUX fordetails. Many see Operation ChristmasChild as a way of demonstrating God’s love in atangible way to needy children and sharing theGood News of Jesus Christ.Over the past 22 years, Operation ChristmasChild has delivered 94 million shoeboxes toneedy children in more than 100 countries.Simon Barrington from Samaritan’s Pursesaid, “We’re asking everyone across the UK tohelp us reach 100 million shoeboxes. It’s greatway to celebrate Christmas - showing children, most of whom live in the most difficult circumstances, that God loves them and cares for themand that He’s not forgotten them.”Visit www.operationchristmaschild.org.uk forall the relevant details.Stewardship : Making the linkA RECENT survey has led to attention beingfocused on how charities spend their money. The Charity Commission has come underpressure to respond to cases of some charitiesspending as little as 16p of every £1 given, the rest being absorbed in costs. In one case, of £221,000 total outgoings,£35,000 went to the charitable cause whilefundraisers received more than £84,000 incommission! An overwhelming number ofpeople surveyed wanted charities to be moreopen about how they spend public donations. While there are a number of charities thatgo to great lengths to do this, churches have anopportunity to lead the way in being clearabout how they communicate. In my role, I get to see many differentapproaches this. My experience has been that,in general, churches who work hard to ensurethey are using their income as well as possibletend to pay less attention to communication. It’s somehow assumed that money given tothe church will just be used for appropriatepurposes. However, this strikes me as a missedopportunity because it embraces the principleof linking mission with ministry, which is atthe heart of stewardship.Although the annual review is one way inwhich many churches provide this sort ofinformation, there are a vast number of otherimaginative options that can be used throughoutthe year. You are welcome to contact me for furtherdetails on 0161 828 1474.JAMES EMMERSONDiocesan Stewardship Officer

ZZZ M(a)-CRUX.NOV.12_z/CRUX.M/APR.05 23/10/2012 16:13 Page 13CRUX – Keeping you in touchCome on City! Revd Pete Horlock talks to CRUX abouthis role as chaplain to Manchester City Football ClubPete aims to lift the Blues13WITH all the big signings that take place in thefootball transfer windows there’ll be one thatprobably escaped most people’s attention. The Revd Chris Howitz, who was club chaplainat Manchester City between 2006 and 2011,now follows the Blues from the warmth of theSultanate of Oman where he’s the minister forthe Anglican Church in Muscat - slightly differentsurroundings from the sky blue of theEtihad!Chris did a fantastic job as the club chaplain, providing a very approachable, down-to-earthsupport to fans, staff and players when theyneeded it. I succeeded him in the role inJanuary, joining the club at a very exciting timein its history. That final game against QPR was bothhorrendous and awesome rolled into one, andit will be very interesting to see how the clubdoes this season with the expectations of fansand owners greatly increased. At this point you might be thinking ‘Aren’tfootball chaplains a bit pointless?’ Well 14 of the20 Premiership clubs have them and I’ll let JohnMotson give you the heads-up on what we do:“Chaplains offer time and know the value ofkeeping confidences, which in a world where theleaked story and dropping of names is commonplaceis a value recovered.“Sometimes theyget asked to do thekind of tasks most ofus would never careto face. They areaccountable to theirclubs but not paid bythem.“I am glad thatsome of the scepticismthey faced hasgiven way to recognisingthere’s a placefor the personal touch in what might otherwisebe an impersonal footballing world.”It is a privilege to be able to serve Man City(even though I’ve grown up following Arsenal). The role is pretty diverse: whether it’s gettingalongside bereaved families to take a scatteringof ashes service, giving a talk to the young footballscholars at Platt Lane, meeting with the Cityin the Community team, having a cup of tea withthe groundsmen, writing articles for the matchday programme or getting alongside the staff andplayers at Carrington. In all of this I’m constantly looking to join inthe work that God is already doing in peoples’lives; taking the opportunities I’m presented withto serve them and share the good news of Jesusin a relational and accessible way. It’s amazing to think this football clubstarted out in 1880 as a mission initiative ofAnna Connell (the daughter of Revd ArthurConnell the rector of St Mark’s, Gorton) toserve her local community. I’m sure she’dnever have guessed the impact her gospelwork would have.My prayer is that in some way God continuesto get the glory: as people come to know hislove for them through Jesus and as the clubcontinues to find ways to serve local communitiesin this city.
