Thanks to all contributorswho have supplied their stories for thisseries over the last four years!SALFORD Deanery covers the inner area ofthe city that was the original City of Salfordbefore enlargement in 1974. Currently thereare 15 churches in 12 parishes. The churches in the deanery have had tocope with 50 years of major populationdecline, which has affected all congregations, and many of the churches built in the 19thcentury have now gone. However, we nowhave a growing population again, and arenewed optimism in our churches.Salford has a proud history as a creative, innovative city. It claims the first free publiclibrary, the first public park, and ChapelStreet was the first street to be lit by artificiallight. In the churches we have a proud historytoo with many fine buildings and a history ofclergy and people meeting real social andspiritual needs in courageous ways. The city is ever changing and our churcheschange and adapt too. The deanery hasSalford University in it and now the BBC andMediaCityUK. We have lots of areas ofregeneration and our churches strive to beplaces of stability and constancy to those whoAFTER eight years working in theDiscipleship and Ministry TrainingDepartment, Jayne Prestwood ismoving on to become a full-timeChaplain at St Peter’s House forthe Manchester Universities. In those eight years Jayne hasbeen Reader Training Officer,OLM Vice Principal and mostrecently Local Ministry Officer. She has been consistent in encouragingvocations and collaborativestruggle with change, while also offering awarm welcome to newcomers and freshvision for all.Revd Canon Andy Salmon, Area DeanTHE deanery is proud of being at the forefrontof interfaith affairs and ecumenicalwork. It benefits from thelatter’s musical gifts and the former’s hospitality. It is a good example of the Anglican-Methodist covenant in practice. The partnershipis also finding expression in preparationsfor a joint Pilgrimage to Israel in December2013.☛ A fortnightly interfaith dialogue groupstarted by Dr Irene Lancaster and Revd LisaBattye has now been meeting in BroughtonPark for nearly four years. It involves people from the OrthodoxJewish community and churches of mostdenominations, and discussions are seriouslytheological. The group has developed a wayof doing interfaith dialogue that is beinghailed as ‘The Broughton Park Model’.Church House says farewell to Jayneministry in each of these posts, andhas been instrumental in setting upthe Foundations for MinistryCourse (FFM), and the AuthorisedLay Ministry Course (ALM).There will be many individualswho will be grateful for the support, wisdom, guidance andencouragement they have receivedfrom her and through the coursesshe has managed. We wanted to raise moneybut also raise L’Arche’s profile – the oxygenof publicity which, funnily enough, we feltquite starved of at around the 23-mile pointThe new house in Withington awaiting conversion, and theL’Arche Manchester group seem very happy with it.(oxygen that is, not publicity)! In the autumn, L’Arche Manchester will beopening its first house. It will be a house for fivepeople with learning disabilities and three live-inassistants. It will be a place where people withand without learning disabilities share life asordinary, valued members of their community. We want to create a family-like sense ofbelonging where, instead of ‘carers’ and the‘cared for’, we shop, cook and share the choresof daily life as brothers and sisters in a relationshipof equality. As an ecumenicalChristian community wehave forged strong linkswith our local Catholic,Methodist, Baptist andUnited Reformed Churchesas well as the Church ofEngland parish of St Jamesand Emmanuel, Didsburywho have hosted and supportedour group for the lastfew years. The name, L’Arche, comes from the Frenchword for ‘the Ark’ with itsbeautiful symbolism both ofthe inclusivity of Noah’sArk (where there is a placefor everyone) and the Ark oftGcmfndtwawwbmRh

Appalled by the soulless, inhuman treatment provided, Jean says hefelt called to relationship; called, he says, by thefaces of the men and women in the institutionasking: “will you be my friend?”.Over the last 50 years the place ofpeople with learning disabilities haschanged immeasurably for the better butthat essential calling which Jean feltremains as valid today as it has alwaysbeen: “Will you be my friend?”.Can we create places where people withlearning disabilities are spiritually andemotionally fulfilled and feel the hand ofgenuine friendship welcoming them to afull, valued place in our communities?☛ If you want to find out more aboutL’Arche Manchester lots of details are atwww.larchemanchester.org.uk - whereyou can also still offer to sponsor Kevin!

Last August, St Nicholas,Burnage welcomed a new young organist in theform of musician and composer Ollie Mills. His arrival, along with the enthusiasm of theRevd Rachel Mann and churchwardens, led tothe idea of ‘Burnage Community Choir’.Rachel says: “We have continued to blossomand develop our singing skills with everyrehearsal, as well as having a lot of fun along theway. We have sung a varied programme of musicfrom the Beatles and musical theatre through toour latest venture into Karl Jenkins’ Adiemus.“Our numbers have grown steadily, combiningpeople from the congregation and widercommunity. Age is no barrier as we range from18 to 92 years old. zyx-CRUX.JUN.12 16/5/12 8:20 pm Page 1212 June 2012Thinking outside the boxVICKY JOHNSON describes how StMichaels Flixton is a ‘learning church’ withsomething to teach the whole community.THE ancient parish church of St Michael’s,Flixton has placed great importance on learningfor more than 350 years. In 1643, the thenRector had a vision of setting up a school forlocal children, and the school still serves thecommunity today. With children now well looked after, the PCCis still striving to create a learning communityfor the whole parish.Jenni Beaumont, co-ordinator for educationand nurture in the parish said: “We want to helpeveryone develop their potential, and grow infaith. We can see that people are hungry to knowmore about God and we are trying to think ofnew ways to make the good news readily availableto everyone.”St Michael’s began a popular education programto attract seekers and enquirers.Emmaus and ‘Explore’ : The Church usesthe well-established Emmaus course for teachingand learning. The foundation course, of 15weeks, provides a good introduction to theChristian faith. There are also shorter modulesrun with other local churches. The church is developing its own course, called ‘Explore’, for people who are tentativelyexploring faith and on the fringes of church life.Friday Night Theology is an informal groupexploring issues in contemporary theology, which relate to daily living. A guest speaker or‘expert’ is invited to lead a discussion, and thedebate usually continues next door in theChurch Inn (see below).Topics for discussion have included:Religion and Science, A Christian response toAtheism, Climate Change, Politics and Faith,Media and Communications Today and 'What'sthe point of theology anyway?' led by CanonTheologian Andrew Shanks. The evenings arealways lively and attract 20-30 people to thinkoutside the box.Beer and Bible is an informal discussiongroup held in the local pub. Sessions deliberatelyheld away from church in a relaxed settingencourage open discussion and engage with adifferent section of the community. Our first event kicked off with Bishop JackNichols, a lively and entertaining speaker. Wehave plans for future events of Biblical Food, and Bible at Bedtime (a twist on the popularBook at Bedtime slot).St Michael's Lecture Series brings contemporaryfaith-based thinkers to Flixton. OnThursday, June 14 (7.30pm) we will welcomeRabbi Reuven Silverman from the ManchesterReform Synagogue to St Michael’s.A writer and broadcaster involved in interfaithdialogue and discussions, Rabbi Silvermanis one of the most forward thinkers and educatorsof his generation. He recently contributed tothe Lambeth-Jewish forum, Jews and Christians:Perspectives on Mission.Vaughan Reeves, Emmaus course leader, said: “We don’t do anything in half measures atSt Michael’s. We may only have a small building, but as a church community we are muchbigger and want to push the boundaries. Wecherish every opportunity to share God’s loveand explore our faith.”

zyx-CRUX.JUN.12 16/5/12 8:20 pm Page 13CRUX – Keeping you in touchWhat can we learn from Tampere?WHAT can you gain froman exchange trip, by linkingup with a group in a differentcountry and culture, bymaking friends with likemindedpeople overseas?AL GILLIAN’s experienceof a visit to our link dioceseof Tampere in Finland isthat you actually can learnquite a lot! This is the firstof two reports from himfor CRUX.IN JANUARY 2010, fiveFinnish Lutheran pastors visitedus here in Saddleworth todiscover a bit more about theAnglican Church - and as aresult last September, FrChristopher, Pat and I were onour flight to Helsinki with a chance to reversethe process. On arrival Fr Christopher went to stay withJuhani Routasalo, Pastor of Humppila Parish, while Pat and I went to Jokioinen, where wewould be staying with Jyrki and his family. The hospitality we all enjoyed during ourstay was incredible. We had the opportunity toThe exterior and interior of theLutheran church in Humppila Parish13explore the fabulous facilitiesof the Lutheran Church;many people gave freely oftheir time to talk to us aboutthe organisation and work ofthe church; and to attend services. On several occasions wehad to ‘sing for our supper’,especially Fr Christopher andthat was especially so at thereception laid on at Jyrki andRaija’s house, when we hadto talk about our roles andthe Anglican Church inSaddleworth. We did this in front of anumber of other pastors, wives and Church Councilmembers. It was verynerve-wracking, but at leastwe were able to speak English and have ittranslated. We also enjoyed visits to a nature reserveand an observatory. In fact, we found the wholevisit mutually beneficial: there are as manythings they are learning from us as we are fromthem. Find out more about our visit in a futureedition of CRUX.CHAPLAINCY STUDY DAYTHE annual Manchester Chaplaincy Study Day,attended by over 25 chaplains from all over theNorth West, took place at WrightingtonHospital. The day provided a good opportunityfor chaplains to meet and discuss topical issues.Dr Andrew Crompton from the University ofLiverpool led sessions on ‘Multifaith spaces:symptoms and agents of religious and socialchange’ and Revd Kevin Dunn from the ChristieHospital gave a lecture and facilitated discussiongroups. The day was chaired by Revd Dr Ian Carterfrom Salford Royal, chair of Greater ManchesterChaplaincy Collaborative (GMCC).
