KAWARTHA TRADES AND TECHNOLOGY CENTREA Heightened CommitmentWith many top priorities to consider when buildinga world-class innovative teaching facility, thecommitment to constructing a green building is akey objective for the Kawartha Trades and Technology Centre(KTTC) project.That is why <strong>Fleming</strong> <strong>College</strong> is using the Leadership inEnergy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification rating(an internationally recognized green building certification system)for the design, construction and operation of the KTTC. WithLEED Silver standards in the initial plan, <strong>Fleming</strong> has boostedits effort to go for LEED Gold – to make the KTTC one of thegreenest buildings in Ontario!The LEED Gold certification requires the efficient use ofenergy, water and materials to reduce a building’s operatingcosts, minimize environmental impact and improve indoorenvironmental quality. Following LEED Gold guidelines ensuresthat <strong>Fleming</strong> integrates green features and best buildingpractices to support its mission to provide a sustainableand healthy future.Meet the person who oversees the entireconstruction project, KTTC Project ManagerTom Holden.TOM HOLDEN<strong>Fleming</strong> <strong>College</strong>, KTTC Project ManagerTom’s leadership role is significant, especiallywhen it is to meet the goal of completingthe project on time and on budget – he’ssucceeding!As the KTTC Project Manager, Tombrings together multi-tasking, organization and peoplemanagement skills while co-ordinating floor plans, sitecontractors, facility instructions and LEED standards. He makesdaily decisions about the construction activities. Tom enjoysworking on every aspect of the project. John actively supports a committee ofenvironmental professionals who are raising awareness in theirindustry of the KTTC project.As the owner of Cambium Environmental Inc. inPeterborough, John is a renowned environmental industryleader. His company’s success is founded on providingenvironmental consulting and engineering services. He recentlyadded geotechnical, planning, building science and materialstesting to the company’s services portfolio. This past winter,John opened a second office in Simcoe County to better servehis clients. ALUMNI UPDATESDaniel Allen, Terrain and WaterResources Technician ‘95After leaving SGS Geosol in 2003, Itaught English as a second language forseveral years until a good friend had theconfidence in me to entrust her client’stranslation contracts to me. In 2006,I began my own unofficial translationcompany, PTS – Precision TranslationServices. From 2009 to present, we grewso rapidly that I quit teaching and begantranslating full time, often contractingother freelancers when the workloadbecame too much to handle. In Marchof 2012, we became legitimate andregistered our company in Brazil. 2012marked our most successful year to date,increasing sales by 75% and employingmore people than ever. I am currently65% owner with a Brazilian/Americanpartner.
