<strong>Sacred</strong> <strong>Heart</strong> <strong>Cathedral</strong> <strong>School</strong>First Holy Communion<strong>Sacred</strong> <strong>Heart</strong> <strong>Cathedral</strong> <strong>School</strong> second graders made their First Holy Communion on May 1, <strong>2010</strong>. Preparing thecommunicants throughout the year were teachers Ms. Fran Herrick and Mrs. Monica Chrysandreas, along with ReligiousEducation Director Brigid Johnson and her staff. Father David Boettner presided in his first Holy Communion as Rectorof <strong>Sacred</strong> <strong>Heart</strong> <strong>Cathedral</strong> along with Father Christopher Riehl, Deacon Jim Lawson, Deacon Joe Stackhouse, and SHCSPrincipal Sedonna Prater. From there she advanced andwon the East Tennessee District, beforegoing to the state level in Nashvilleto compete.The competition concluded at thestate level where she went up againstthe regional winners from Memphis,Nashville, and Chattanooga. She wasawarded a $2500 scholarship!The theme for this year’s contest was“Cyber Communication: Progress orProblem?” Congratulations to Siennaand thank you for representing <strong>Sacred</strong><strong>Heart</strong> <strong>Cathedral</strong> <strong>School</strong>!Speech students at SHCS are coachedby Mrs. Connie Schmidt and Mrs.Susan Clifton.<strong>Sacred</strong> <strong>Heart</strong> 8th grade artstudent Hayden White received aGold Key and a Silver Medal for hisself-portrait shoe sculpture, “<strong>Heart</strong>and Sole,” in the <strong>2010</strong> ScholasticArt and Writing Awards. Theprestigious program recognizes theaccomplishments of talented 7th-12th grade art students nationwide.White was among many honoredin a special ceremony that tookplace June 9th at Carnegie Hall inNew York City. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg officially proclaimed theday “<strong>2010</strong> Scholastic Art and Writing Awards Day” and lit up the Empire StateBuilding in gold that night. SHCS Art teacher, Mrs. Tina Marcheggiani sponsorsthe program for our <strong>Sacred</strong> <strong>Heart</strong> students and submits artwork each year.2009 SHCS graduate, Preston Spalding, was a winner last year as well.Hayden’s mother, Tricia, reflected, “We had a great time in NYC. The awardsceremony was fantastic and what an amazing group of talented kids! Haydenhad a great time making new friends and enjoyed getting a behind-the-scenestour of Carnegie Hall. He also had the opportunity to meet with Tom Otterness,an American sculptor whose quirky and whimsical sculptures can be foundall over New York and the world. Hayden got to visit his studio in Brooklynand see how he goes about creating his work.” Hayden added, “I met somevery interesting and fun people.
