Page 4 District 4-A1 April 2013Those Who Have Sight But Cannot SeeFar too many walk through life without appreciating the sights and beauty that surround them every day.Close your eyes and imagine that you had just fallen. You get up on your feet, open your eyes, but you cannotsee. In an instant, your world changes from one that is busy, fast-paced and for far too many people taken forgranted. Now you are faced with challenges never before imagined. You are feeling completely isolated, alone with nowhere to turn. Self-confidence evaporates instantly and your world implodes. What are yougoing to do? What chance do you have? What choices will you make? Now open your eyes and truly see the beauty that is all around you. Take notice of those around you whoimpact your life. Look at all the wonders that you walk by every day. See the real opportunities that are herefor you today. You can remove the blindness of negativity, the negative self-talk that reduces your peripheral vision ofopportunities you pass by. The macular degeneration stops your forward vision, thus preventing you frommoving toward your goal or passion. The cataracts cloud your vision and make you wish what only couldhave been. You can choose to control your reactions to today’s event with a clear vision of where you are going in yourspiritual, family, business, financial and personal (physical/mental) life or you can choose to let the event blindor detract you from your pathway. You can develop an attitude of gratitude and appreciate the sights, people and opportunities that cross yourpath each day or just go through the day making it through, but building another layer of cloudiness for yourimportant goals. Will you develop a relationship with family, friend or business that will be rewarding or will you let thatrelationship continue to drift further from sight? What is your purpose for today? Do you have a clear vision or are you leaving it all to chance?Do you have a plan? Does it move you toward your real goals or is your plan set in sand that drifted from youroriginal ideas? Will you achieve satisfaction at the end of the day for all that you accomplished or will you succumb to theday’s events and wait for another one tomorrow? It is time for a shift in our vision for today. It will take a combination of gratitude, faith, belief in our self andan intentional focus on our priorities for today. You are or will become what you think about most of the time. Your tone, words and body language simplycreate a visual movie of your thoughts.“Be the Director of a movie that showcases your day and moves you toward your goals” . . . Jim Syvertsen

Page 10 District 4-A1 April 2013Lions Clubs Lions InternationalLDistrict 4-A14020 Rancho Mesa CourtModesto, CA 95356April 2, 2013LlDear Lions:The last of the Region Student Speaker /..,.,mnmn Contests is bbbhjklllllllllllllClubsbeing completed. The next level will be the District onApril 20, 2013 at the Hilton Hotel in Sacramento, CA. The winner of the four Regions will receive a check for$4500 and advances to the Area One contest comprised of three Districts. The winner receives $6500 inscholarship money. Then the four Area winners meet in Torrance on June 1, 2013. The winner receives$10,000 in scholarship funds and over $21,000 overall for his/her achievement. The competition is intenseat these levels. The work and effort of the students who participate to develop extraordinary speeches continues to amazeus and truly shows us that there is hope for the future with these types of students in our schools. It takescourage, great work ethic and a strong commitment to reach each level in our contest. Therefore it isextremely important that we do our part in preparing for the contest and providing an environment that isneutral, quiet and free of distractions. Each chairperson at every level should be well prepared, have the required judges, timers, tellers, and doorguards in attendance. They should know the procedures, contest rules and causes for disqualification. Allissues and concerns by or about a contestant should be handled quietly and privately, not in an open forumwith other contestants or guests. Remember these students are trying to mentally prepare to take centerstage and impress the judges with a great presentation. It does not take much to totally disrupt theirthought process and/or speaking rituals. We show them the greatest respect for their efforts when acontest is conducted in a quiet, confident and well organized environment.Unfortunately most of the issues that arise are from chairpersons or Lions who have been involved in manycontests and rely on their experience when dictating procedures or resolving issues that arise. Always referto the contest manual on any issue and follow the rules as written, not your interpretation, recollection orbeliefs. One issue that came up in several zone and region contests was the use of “notes”. Many believe thatnotes are not allowed above the club level in competition. The rules on disqualification clearly state thatthe use of notes above club level in excess of one 3x5 card on both sides or Braille equivalent are a cause. That means that a student in competition this June for the MD4 grand prize of $10,000 may use notes onone 3x5 card on both sides. We rarely see any notes used above a club or zone level. Therefore manyarbitrarily decide that the rule is that no note cards are allowed.I personally called and spoke with IPDG Ken Sherwood, President of the MD4 Lions Student SpeakerFoundation. He clarified that the rule as stated in the contest manual is actually the rule without exceptionat any level. We look forward to the extraordinary speakers we will be privileged to hear at the District, Area and MD4contests. Let’s all make a commitment to ensure that all future contest chairs are prepared in advance, that contests are kept distraction-free and let us commit to holding a well-executed event. These greatstudents deserve nothing less from our Lions leadership.Share Your Passion for Lions, DG Jim

Terry Anderson ⦁March 24, 2013: On Sunday we made our“annual” trip to Vallejo with PDG Don Allen’spickup full of 27 boxes of eyeglasses which at 400-500 pairs per box are a lot of eyeglasses! (If youpack an apple box well, that is equivalent to 500pairs per LIS.) “We” included PDG Don with“Jenel” & Steve Jensen, Oakdale Lions; CarrieGuadagnolo, Delta Lions; Terry & Sandy Anderson,Turlock 12:10 Lions; Di Ringer, Craig Kellogg & SueCarner, Modesto 500 Lions. We received instructions on how to sort glassesand what to toss, as most of us only do it at themost once a year and forget the parameters. Asusual there were plenty of the old fashioned verylarge glasses which we had fun trying on andlaughing at ourselves as well as others. Hey I usedto wear some of those big “honkers”! Ed. 2 of ourmembers also received instruction on how tocheck the prescriptions of the glasses. We sorted for a couple of hours and then had anice BBQ lunch courtesy of LIS, and then did acouple of more hours before heading back to thevalley. Yes we stayed until we had gone throughall the boxes from Don’s truck. Sure was great nothaving to fight the usual traffic for that time of theday. Nice we were able to go on Sunday asnormally they are not open on the weekend.Sooooooo, hopefully next time PDG Don makes atrip you too can enjoy doing the above or maybeyour club can make arrangements to go up there.⦁“Academy Award”for Most SignificantProject SmallClub presented toZC Terry & Pres.Sandy AndersonTurlock 12:10 Lionsby PIP Sid Scruggs& PID Bob Smith atMD4 Convention. ⦁
