She also sent direct mail and published a monthlynewsletter, just to keep her name out <strong>the</strong>re.<strong>The</strong> B&M Club meetings usually started on a positive note, butby <strong>the</strong> time <strong>the</strong> members had a couple drinks in <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>the</strong> dirt anddiscouragement began to leak out. Tonight was no different. Afterdiscussing <strong>the</strong>ir current production and <strong>the</strong>ir sales goals for <strong>the</strong> nextmonth, <strong>the</strong>y descended into gossip, backbiting, and bitching aboutprospecting, office politics, and sales in general.Tonight’s bitch-session was particularly malignant and Neillonged to escape. After his third drink, he tried to pick up an attractiveblonde at <strong>the</strong> bar. She wanted nothing to do with him.<strong>Feeling</strong> rejected and dejected, he headed back to <strong>the</strong> group’stable. Jason, who had observed <strong>the</strong> failed pick-up attempt, was layingin wait for Neil. He laughed, <strong>the</strong>n said in a voice loud enoughfor <strong>the</strong> entire group to hear, “Gee, Neil, no wonder your sales aredown—you can’t even sell yourself.” 10
