FouadELKOURY1952Lot 023'Wave Building' Signed, Dated, Numerated60 X 75 cm. Lambda Print (2/13) 2005Estimate (US$ 3,000 - 4,000)Born in Paris in 1952, Fouad Elkoury is Lebanon’s foremost photographer. Althoughoriginally trained in architecture in London during the 1970s, Elkoury turned to photographyafter the onset of the Lebanese Civil War. Documenting the 1982 Israeli invasion of Beirut,his images were subsequently reproduced in a number of international publications. Since1984 he has divided his time between Paris and Beirut, although his explorations of arange of subjects have taken him to the far corners of the world with projects that captureeverything from the cityscapes of locales such as Rome, Amman and Djibouti, to thedocumenting of life in Gaza and the West Bank immediately after establishment of the OsloAccord. In 1989 he joined the Rapho press agency and won the Prix Medicis Hors les Murs.Producing several artist books over the span of his prolific career, many of which areconsidered landmark in the field of contemporary photography, most notably “Beirut CityCentre” (Editions du Cyprès, Paris), he has often launched publications with coincidinginternational <strong>exhibit</strong>ions. A founding member of the Arab Image Foundation, he has beeninstrumental in fashioning the creative discourse of post-war Lebanon. Working in bothphotography and video for several years, he has participated in numerous events acrossthe globe, including the Sharjah Biennial and the Venice Biennale, where he representedLebanon in the country’s first-ever national pavilion in 2007.
