the Grounds of Mount Hope Estate & WineFEIS IrishDanceCompetitionSaturdayWhat is a Feis? An Irish Step-Dancing Competition. Soundssimple enough, right? Think again!A Little HistoryBefore looking at the modern Feis(pronounced “fesh”) it’s important torecall a little history. Irish step-dancingas we know it in the 21st century can betraced back to traveling dance mastersof 18th century rural Ireland. They eachdeveloped their own “steps” (footworkdanced to eight measures or bars of music)and competed against each other for theopportunity to teach in different regions. After decades when Irish step-dancingremained relatively unknown outside of itsinner circle, Riverdance hit the world stagein the 1990s. Suddenly, Irish step-dancingbecame the “rage,” not just in Irelandbut world-wide. Families who had nevereven heard of a “step” or “ghillie” wereenrolling their children in step-dancingclasses and assembling at Feisanna (pluralfor Feis) to watch them compete. The Celtic Fling and Highland Games isproud once again to be the official Feissponsor of the 8th annual Celtic Fling Feis. With honors, the Celtic Fling Feis will behosting the 2011 Senior Belt. Through ourcombined efforts with the Irish culturalsociety, the Pittsburgh Winter Feis andthe West Virginia Feis we have grownto be a destination on the Feis circuit. Aspecial thank you to Jim Graven, KathyYates and Jared Spencer and all of ourvolunteers for all of their hard work andinput in making this Feis what it is today.Saturday visitors to the Fling are welcome towatch the ongoing Feis competition with it’s1000 dancers, many of who will advanceto participate in regional competitionsknown as Oireachtas (pronounced “or-rocktas”)and the highest levels to the WorldChampionships in Ireland (OireachtasCruinne). While competition among thedancers is clearly keen, the bottom line isthat for each of them, Irish dancing is FUNand a link to their Irish heritage.Celtic DancersThe North American Feis Commission (NAFC), ofwhich the Fling is a member, is an organization ofFeis Managers responsible for the organizing ofFeiseanna in Canada and the United States. Theprimary role of the NAFC is the development andpromotion of Irish Culture through the medium ofIrish dance and music as well as to provide guidancefor establishing and executing a multi-culturalevent promoted to advance Celtic heritage andattract participants and observers. It also existsto promote Irish culture —it’s evolution, symbolism, appreciation and respect—as well as to encouragestudy of Irish Culture in North America.Thank you to the NAFCfor allowing us to hostthe Gerry CampbellPerpetual Senior Belt 2011!Rebel Heart Irish Dancers: Throughoutthe year, Rebel Heart dancers attractaudiences at Irish pubs, large communityfestivals, multi-cultural events, charityfundraisers and other touring venturesin Harrisburg, Philadelphia, New Jerseyand East Stroudsburg including a collaborationwith the world fusion band,Celtic Crossroads at the WildwoodsNJ Convention Center in August, 2010.They have also developed a program toeducate, inspire and motivate studentsto get involved in the arts. Designed forschools, libraries and college groups, this entertaining presentation has beenpraised by students and teachers alike.Reid School of Highland Dance: MargueriteReid founded the non-profitPhiladelphia Highland Dancing Associationover 60 years ago. The ReidSchool of Highland Dance performs atvarious venues such as Green Lane ScottishIrish Festival and Philadelphia St.Andrew’s Society events including theirTartan Ball. A special memory for theschool was performing with the DavidsonSchool at the Kennedy Center HonorsGala for Sir Sean Connery, the Presidentand other distinguished guests when Mr.Connery received the honor in 1999.Scoil Rince na Connemara: Hailingfrom Northeastern Pennsylvania, ScoilRince na Connemara has been entertainingcrowds at the Celtic Fling for7 years. The mission of this innovativedance group is to further Irish cultureby showing the true beauty, grace andathleticism of Irish dance, which includesintricate solo step dancing, artistic groupchoreography and traditional Ceilidancing. Connemara is renowned fortheir unique blend of progressive stepdancing with modern Celtic sounds thatis often imitated, but never duplicated.6 June 24-26

the Grounds of Mount Hope Estate & WineScottish Highland GamesMen and women compete Saturday in the Clachneart, the 2 and 4 stone weight toss, theScottish Hammer, the Caber Toss, the Sheaf Toss, and the 4 Stone Weight Throw for Height.Competitors are assigned points according to their placement in each event. The athlete withthe best overall combined performance earns the title “Athlete of the Day.” So recognized, the Athlete Of The Day earns an automatic berth in the East Coast Championships inAlexandria, VA, and in the coveted North American Highland Games Championship inRichmond, VA in October. The Athlete is also presented a symbolic Highland Claymore sword. What’s In A Game?Clachneart. Similar to our modern-day shot put, using a stone weighing 16 to28 pounds instead of a steel ball. Each contestant is allowed a 7.5 foot “run-up” to thetoe-board.28 and 56 Pound Throw. Athletes throw metal weights with a chain orhandle attached in a toss for maximum distance. A 9-foot run-up is permitted, but themost popular throwing form is similar to that of the discus. Best throw out of three counts.Scottish Hammer. A round metal hammer head weighing 22 pounds with acane staff is thrown for distance. The athlete’s feet may not move until he releases thehammer. Best of three throws.Sheaf Toss. Using a three-tined pitchfork, competitors hurl a 20-pound burlap bag filled with straw over ever-higher standards. Each contestanthas three tries to clear the bar. The standard continues to be raised until only one competitor remains that has cleared the tallest height.56-Pound Weight Toss. A weight, with handle attached, is tossed over a bar raised between two standards. The bar is initially set at aheight agreed upon by all competitors. Using only one hand, each athlete has three attempts to clear the bar at each level. Of course, the event goeson until only one is left who has cleared the bar.Caber Toss. This is the centerpiece for modern Highland Games and remains a true test of not only brute strength but timing and balance as well.We note constantly that Caber winners are not necessarily the largest athletes on the field. The Caber itself is a tapered log, approximately 19 feetlong, weighing up to 130 pounds. The athlete hoists it up, folds his hands under the end whilst cradling it against the shoulder. Gaining the balance of theupright Caber, he will then run briefly with it to gain momentum for the toss. The log is then heaved, hopefully, up and over to “ground” its heavy end sothat it falls forward. Judging is based as if one were looking at a clock. The closer to “Noon” the Caber lands, the higher the score.LET THE GAMES BEGIN!Men’s Best Legsin a Kilt Contest1:30PM Saturday & SundayLadies, here’s your chance toadmire the hottest calves thatgrace the Festival groundsthis weekend—and there’s nopenalty for peeping!
