PAGE 2Just a Thought...HOLD THE DATE:SUNDAY, MAY 23, 2010!Many have been inquiring, what isOld St. Pat’s doing for Pentecost thisyear? If you’ve been with us the pasttwo years, we’ve culminated the Easter season insome pretty spectacular ways. In 2008, we took thewords of Acts literally: “when the day of Pentecostwas fulfilled, it found them together in one place.”And so we did. We gathered for one big Mass atthe UIC Forum and what a celebration is was!In 2009, Old St. Pat’s wanted to express what beinga mission church was all about in a big way and somore than 400 people spent the day cleaning up andrepairing the Su Casa Shelter in the Back of the Yardsneighborhood and then came together in a “sea ofred (T-shirts)” for the 5 p.m. Mass. This year, 2010, thanks to the creative imagining ofBob Kolatorowicz and the Justice Initiative, we’vebeen presented with an idea of again having just onePentecost Liturgy that will take place literally in theintersection of Des Plaines and Adams! For manyyears, Old St. Pat’s has leveraged our mission as beingAt the Crossroads! Wouldn’t it be fascinating if wecould gather 4,000 people on one Sunday, one place, seated from north to south, and east to west tocelebrate what being Church in the world is all about?Imagine the message of the Gospel being preached, not with words necessarily, but with the presence of4,000 believers (indeed 4,000 preachers) comingtogether in the middle of the crossroads, and whosedesire is to bring this message to all the cornersof the world. Now, more than ever, we see a church that isstruggling. Significant change is only going to happenif WE make it happen. Please plan on joining us onSunday, May 23 as Old St. Pat’s brings the messageof the life-giving Spirit into the streets! Spread theword and invite your family, friends, and neighbors. We want to make this big! More details will beforthcoming.Fr. Tom HurleyFor the past four years,Foundations teens havevolunteered during theirsummer vacations incommunities fromNicaragua to New York. They have cleaned up after Katrina in New Orleans, learned about immigration challenges along the Mexican border in Texas, built homes for Sioux Indians on a reservation in South Dakota, traveled thehighways and hollers of Kentucky, and the country roads of West Virginia —all in the name of service and social justice.Becky Terlep, Old St. Patrick’s Youth Minister, calls these experiences“Worktours.” The teens call them “awesome.”Francis Wellin, a senior at Lincoln Park High School, who has been going onFoundations Worktours since he was a freshman, says they are a great way toput things in perspective. “Worktours have opened my eyes to the issues ofthe world around me,” he says. “When you’re in high school, it’s very easy toget wrapped up in your own world, but Worktour stops that from happening.”Wanting to bring that experience to Foundations families and their Old St.Pat’s community, these two friends came up with an idea. “Why don’t we doa Worktour at home?” Not only would it expose their families to what theWorktour experience is all about, but if Chicago-area homeowners werewilling to donate to the Worktour causein exchange for maintenance work ontheir homes and yards, it could be afundraiser as well.It was only a matter of time before theball was rolling. Together with EmilyRivard, a Foundations leader, theseteenage boys started to put their ideaAccording to the grace of God,which is given unto me, as a wisemasterbuilder, I have laid theFoundation, and another buildeththereon. But let every man takeheed how he buildeth thereupon.I Corinthians 3:10into action. They started coordinating a local day of service, complete withmany elements of a typical Worktour Day from stretching in the morning toreflection at the end of a long day of work.Workday 2010 will be, in Wellin’s words, “a one-day extravaganza” ofFoundations crews spread throughout various Chicago-area sites onSunday, May 30, doing for the locals the kind of renovation and repair workthey have been doing in communities across the country for years.According to Rivard, the motivation is two-fold. “Workday will bring theWorktour experience home so Foundations families can experience what wedo on Worktour,” she says, “and it will also help us raise funds so we can do itagain this summer in New Orleans, Detroit, and Birmingham.” With the costsof this summer’s Worktours topping $50,000, fundraising is an important partof what the teens and their families must do to participate. But Wellin is harboring another aspiration for Workday 2010. “I hope it willmake other people feel how good it is to help someone else. Most of all,I hope teens who have never been on a trip will feel motivated to go on aWorktour themselves.”For information concerning Foundations fundraising goals, or if you wouldlike to reserve a Workday crew for yourself, an elderly relative, or a favoritecharity, visit www.foundationsworkday.org.2 Please visit our Web site and the online gift shop at www.oldstpats.org.

AWAKENINGSA MATCH MADE IN HEAVENThe relationship between Old St. Patrick’s Church and LittleBrothers - Friends of the Elderly (LBFE) started more than tenyears ago. Like any relationship, it has matured with time. Both organizations share many of the samemeaningful values. Like LBFE, Old St. Pat’stakes pride in being mission-centered.Old St. Pat’s members work together for aunified purpose of helping others in need.Beth Marek, director of Outreach atOld St. Pat’s, is instrumental in coordinating activities, volunteer opportunities, and special requests throughout theyear. Beth has helped expand the activities and events betweenOld St. Pat’s and LBFE. This year, more than twodozen Old St. Pat’s members became officialLBFE volunteers. With an emphasis on giving, Old St. Pat’sorganized its very first food drive to benefit theLBFE food pantry in 1999. Two food drives arecoordinated throughout the year — during the fall andspring — with an outpouring of support from both organizations.Members of Connections and Little Brothers’enjoy a delightful day trip together. For the pastthree years, theConnections groupfrom Old St. Pat’shas made it anannual event tovolunteer atLBFE for theInternational Dayof the OlderPerson.Connections’members preparedand served lunch to LBFE elders, and provided companionshipfor a few hours. The Connections group is composed of peoplein their 30’s and 40’s and provides social, service, andspiritial opportunities.A lot of energy also comes from JoeHarzich, an Old St. Pat’s member, whorepresents LBFE to the community.Joe is very dedicated to the LBFEHoliday Gift Program. He has provided130 personalized gifts for eldersthrough his coworkers, familymembers, and friends.Celebrating another year!Another commonality between Old St. Pat’s and LBFE isdiversity. With a membership expanding more than 200 zipcodes around greater Chicagoland, Old St. Pat’s Church reachesout to many groups of all ages and ethnicities. Old St. Pat’s ishighly effectivein involving diversegroups in its ministryto promote service, volunteerism, and itsmission to help andbefriend the elderly,as well as otherage-related groups, throughout Chicago.“Little Brothers is sodedicated and loving to the elderly. Just their screening processalone shows a real care and concern. They are good eyes andears for the elders throughout the community,” said Beth. “Thefacility is gorgeous and ascetically pleasing, and the motto andlogo are beautiful. Their hospitality is always over the top.”Old St. Pat’s stands as one of the oldest public buildings in thecity, and for 50 years, LBFE has been standing up for the city’soldest population. Itmay sound like a cliché,but this is a matchmade in heaven!A Little Brothers’member learns newcomputer skills withthe help of a volunteer. The Food Drive provides Little Brothers’members with nutritious food items. Please visit our Web site and the online gift shop at www.oldstpats.org.3

With all the challenges life offers as part of the Church, people wonder: what, beyond the ability tocontinue with tradition, are the benefits of being affiliated, let alone dedicated, to the Church? These are the questions of our age, and the sense is our Church has both the honor and the responsibility of addressing themin dialogue with both Catholics and non-Catholics in an open, sincere, honest, and unapologetic way. And in doing so, theChurch might help reveal why this institution/family/body/community/way of life might actually be relevant — even in the 21st century.Keara Coughlin holds a Master’s of Divinity from the University of Notre Dame. He wrote someplays, but ultimately settled for life in the armyand at court. For a time, life was going rather smoothly for theengaging, well-to-do young Frenchman. He was confident he had made the right choice. That was until he saw firsthand the realities ofbattle, including the St. Bartholomew's Daymassacres of French Protestants in 1572.He fell seriously ill and found himself reviewinghis priorities, including his spiritual life. By thetime he had recovered, Caesar had resolved tobecome a priest. Following his ordination in1582, he undertook special pastoral work:teaching the catechism to ordinary people livingin neglected, rural, out-of-the-way places. Hisefforts were badly needed and well received.Working with his cousin, Caesar developed aprogram of family catechesis. Family catechesis,a program that deepens parental involvement inreligious education, is grounded in the certaintychildren learn their faith first from their parents. The goal of Family Catechesis was to ward offheresy among the people. It met the approval oflocal bishops, and out of these efforts grew anew religious congregation, the Fathers ofChristian Doctrine. One of Caesar's works, Instructions for theFamily on the Four Parts of the Roman Catechism, was published 60 years after his death. He wasbeatified in 1975.Adapted from “The Saint of the Day AmericanCatholic” Web site, www.americancatholic.org.20 Please visit our Web site and the online gift shop at www.oldstpats.org.
