Faculty Updates4RobinClementBucking the trend ofmost of my colleagues,I stayed close to homelast year. However, I didlearn a lot. The highlight forme was working with BethHjelm, who was interimdirector of the Centerfor Sustainable BusinessPractices, in developing ajoint seminar with M.B.A.and MAcc studentsrelated to sustainabilityand accounting. EachHelen GernonThe external relationsrole I play for thedepartment includesdevelopment, stewardship, andalumni relations. To accomplish theweek, a different speakerlectured on an aspect ofsustainability. My favorite was the lectureon green chemistry byDavid Tyler of the UODepartment of Chemistry.Did you know that abowling ball is onemolecule? Did you knowthat, from a life-cycleanalysis perspective, plastic bags have a verysmall cost to societycompared to paper bags,or that Styrofoam cupsare environmentallycheaper than porcelainmugs? These findingshave accounting andmanagement implications(except for the bowling ball,I guess). But what makesthem fun to me is that theyare so counterintuitive. So while others wereexploring the world, Iexplored a bit of campuslife outside Lillis! And I hada great time doing it.department’s goals inthese areas, I eagerlytraveled to New YorkCity, Philadelphia, Seattle,San Francisco, and muchof the state of Oregon.I discovered that thereare accounting Ducks inmost states and manycountries. I even had lunchwith an alumnus in Paris,France, so that proves mypoint. I continued to raisemoney for accountingscholarships; faculty hiring, retention, and research;endowments to secure thefuture of the accountingdepartment; and for thefun of it.
