<strong>Student</strong> <strong>Counselling</strong>ServicesThere’s more to us than just listening


Coming to counselling is about making apositive choice to get support from someonewho is not involved in any aspect <strong>of</strong> your life.<strong>Counselling</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers you the chance to focus onand understand your difficulties. The counsellorswill listen, <strong>of</strong>fer support and understanding whileaccepting your values, attitudes and lifestyle in anon-judgmental way.Help is <strong>of</strong>fered in developing your strengths,making decisions and developing the skills andresources to cope with both <strong>University</strong> and life.As counsellors we help you to find the answers.<strong>Counselling</strong> is part <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>’s <strong>Student</strong>Services and free <strong>of</strong> charge to all students <strong>of</strong> the<strong>University</strong>, whether you are an undergraduateor postgraduate, full or part-time, internationalor home student. Whatever your backgroundwe <strong>of</strong>fer support in a confidential and safeenvironment.All counselling is confidential with the exception<strong>of</strong> when someone is being, or likely to be,seriously harmed. In these rare cases we willdiscuss any necessary break in confidentialitywith you.<strong>Counselling</strong> can help prevent small problemsbecoming much bigger than they need tobe, and can sometimes make the differencebetween completing your studies and graduatingwith a qualification or not. Problems can be dealtwith in counselling, allowing you to work towardsthe things you want out <strong>of</strong> your life.We can help you with most types <strong>of</strong> difficultiesincluding: anxiety, addictions, bereavement,bullying, lack <strong>of</strong> confidence, conflict withflatmates, depression, family problems,homesickness, pregnancy, relationshipdifficulties, suicidal feelings, stress, to namebut a few.Some people feel nervous about seeing acounsellor. But you needn’t worry, as thecounsellor will work towards putting youat your ease.During the session you are given the opportunityto discuss whether counselling is right for youand what might be the way forward. Your firstappointment will last approximately 50 minutesand you would meet with the same counselloreach week.


One session may be all you need while othersmay want to see a counsellor over a longerperiod <strong>of</strong> time. Your counsellor would discussthis with you during the first session.We do keep some records to help usremember what was presented to us byour clients and some statistical and factualinformation is stored on our databaseanonymously.<strong>Counselling</strong> is available to all campuses. Inaddition, the <strong>Student</strong> <strong>Counselling</strong> Services atCity Campus also provide a drop-in serviceevery weekday from 12.30pm-1.30pm andcan arrange early evening appointmentson Tuesdays if you have difficulties gettinghere during the day. A drop-in service is alsoavailable at Walsall Campus. Check with our<strong>of</strong>fice for further details.We advertise and run workshops and varioussupport groups throughout the year.
