William BloomWhy Self-Help Doesn’t Always HelpHave you ever wonderedwhy self-helpand healing strategiesdo not always work –even when practiseddiligently and even bytheir own teachers?This has often botheredme, especiallywhen I have seen close friends work hard atthese techniques and then not achieve thenew life or health they want. Sometimesmy friends have been not only disappointedbut have also, tragically, even felt stung andashamed by their lack of success. These negativefeelings and thoughts arise, I want tosuggest, because people do not have the fullpicture of what is going on when they striveto fulfil their potential and use these self-helpstrategies. They do not see what is beneaththe surface – the unseen realities.So let me create a couple of fables to helpexplain.Facing realityThe first is about a young beech tree. Thisbeautiful young tree was very happy to bepart of his small forest, growing with hisfriends and family, passing through the seasons,providing a home for small creatures.Then one day he began to develop someself-awareness.‘I’m not just part of the forest,’ he thought,‘I am also a unique me, a unique tree.’That autumn he decided that he did notwant to lose his leaves like the rest of hisbeech tree family. ‘I have my own uniqueconsciousness. I decide my own fate. I shallkeep my leaves green and vibrant throughthe winter.’ He focused and focused andwilled himself, using mantra and affirmations,to retain his foliage. I am green andvibrant. I am green and vibrant.But he lost his leaves. They turned goldenand fell to the ground.The next year he decided that he wanted tobe the tallest tree in his forest and carry themost beechnuts. He concentrated hard todeepen his roots and extend his branches andstretch his DNA. He indeed grew an extrafew feet but still there were older beech treesfar taller and the giant Douglas fir dwarfedthem all.Then the following year the weather systemblew in some polluting acid rain fromnorthern industrial Europe. Along with allother trees in his forest, unable to avoid theenvironmental realities, he suffered the burningeffects of the pollution and took someyears to recover.For all his willpower he could not avoid therealities of nature.Beneath the surfaceThe second fable turns our attention toAntarctica and to a beautiful young penguinwho was sitting on top of a small andicy mound. She was a proud and haughtypenguin and felt that she too was a uniqueindividual. She had hatched on an ice shelfalong with several thousand others in hercolony and had slid and slithered with allher cousins down to the ocean, but she knewdeep down that she was special and had aunique destiny.‘I will create my own life,’ she knew. ‘I willnot only swim. I will fly!’Bravely she left her colony and set off onher own. She was determined and wilful andwaddled for many miles, finally reaching asmall mountain. This, she knew, she felt it inher bones, was the magic place! If she couldonly reach the peak she would then be ableto fly. After more days of gruelling struggle,she reached the mountaintop.‘Now I shall fly!’She put her all her will and intention intoher desire to become airborne. Nothing happened.She remained earth-bound. Dismayedshe collapsed on to the ground and fell intoa fitful sleep from which she was awoken byterrible cracking and grinding noises. Theearth and ice beneath her were moving.‘If I cannot fly, I will use my will to stopthe earth moving,’ she thought. But herthoughts were, sadly, useless. She lookedaround. To her dismay she saw that she was,in fact, sitting on the peak of an enormousiceberg floating off into the ocean, leavingbehind the landmass and her fellowcreatures.‘Stop! Stop!’ she cried. But the icebergfloated away to its own inevitable destiny.Penguins cannot fly and the major mass ofan iceberg is beneath the surface.Powerful forcesReturning now to self-help strategies forachieving perfect health and wealth. Theinsights are clear. The unseen problem withthese strategies is that they rarely look at thedeeper realities and conditions. In fact, manyunseen forces influence our physical healthand our material conditions.How many of us are like a tiny penguinsitting on an iceberg, trying to alter our situation,but unaware that the most importantrealities are below our conscious awareness?Beneath our desire for a healthier and happierlife is a massive substratum of powerfulforces: personal karma, family karma, collectivekarma, unconscious emotions, feelingsand histories. All of these cannot just betransformed by, for example, the repetitionof an affirmation no matter how diligently orpurely it is repeated. Even when we commitfully to deep transformation and do the hardwork of personal growth, we will almostalways meet the forces of our past.How many of us are also like the beechtree, wanting the impossible and trying toescape the rhythms and waves of nature andthe forces of our environment?When we focus on our health we cannotfor example avoid the reality that we belongto the vast interdependent collective of humanity,nature and cosmos. The actual atomsand molecules of our bodies, for example, donot belong individually to us, but belong tothe Earth. This means that, regardless of ourunique individual identities, our bodies sharethe collective conditions of all carbon-basedcreatures. So illnesses like cancer may arisesimply from the contact of our bodies withthe toxins of our surroundings. Or epidemicsmay overwhelm us. Just as beech trees shedtheir leaves in Autumn, so we too are embeddedin nature and our environment.Spiritual beingsOf course, there are also miracles, growthand development that transcend these collectiverealities. But in general penguins donot fly!The real miracle, glory and majesty ofbeing human is that we are also spiritualbeings. This means that we have real controlover and are sovereigns of our own consciousnessand hearts. Ann NapierDear Friends,Amanda Painting 1 , aCygnus reader, suggestedthat it would be a lovelyidea to describe to youall how Cygnus started,and how it evolved. We’venever told the first part ofthe story to anyone except a few very closefriends, but my sons tell me it would be goodto tell all. So here goes.Well, the story really began more than 40years ago, when I had a strange dream. In it,I found myself in a cave with a number ofmen and women dressed in dark robes. Twoof them showed me a huge book with manyseals, and then pointed towards an absolutelyvast multitude of people – you couldn’t seewhere it ended – and told me that one day, inthe future, they would want me to share withall those people what was in the book. I said,‘Oh no. I couldn’t possibly be any good atthat.’ And pointing to one of the other peoplethere I suggested ‘why don’t you ask him?He would be much better at it than me’. Butthe answer I received was: ‘Yes, but we wantyou to do it.’ So I gave them my word.Then I woke up, and thought with greatamazement about the dream, as I had neverhad one so seemingly portentous in my lifebefore. Soon, though, I dozed off again, andthe whole dream repeated itself – identical inevery detail. Seems I wasn’t supposed to forgetit! This was a defining moment for me,and it has coloured my whole life ever since.Following a dreamBut... I was only sixteen at the time, sohad not the slightest clue how to fulfil mypromise, and became quite distraught aboutmy ignorance. This perturbation lasted foryears, actually, but I decided that the bestway forward was to do all I could to preparemyself, and take every opportunity that presenteditself to do at least something towardsmy goal. So, I trained to be a teacher becauseI thought that might be useful. There, themost important thing I learned was that therole of a good teacher is not to know all theanswers, but to empower others to find outthe answers for themselves. Later, when Igave up teaching, I learned to type. Then Igot involved with publishing. I also joineda spiritual school in Holland, where I metGeoff, and where I hoped I would gain theexperience and insight that would allow meto serve the Spirit in others and in myself.Seeing a signLater, when we had our first child and Ineeded to be able to work at home, Geoffand I started a publishing services company –Cygnus’s first incarnation, as we call it! Whydid we name it Cygnus? Well, we had no ideawhat we were going to call it until one daywhen – on holiday in Guernsey – we cameacross a pub sign with a strikingly beautifulswan on it. As soon as we spotted it, webrought the car to a screeching halt in themiddle of the road and took a photograph.Afterwards, electrified, we sat together ona grassy cliff-top and shared what we bothknew: that our business would be calledCygnus (Latin for ‘swan’), and that it wouldsomehow help to draw us closer to our task.Feeling already the overlighting, protectingwings of the great swan, we remembered togethersome deeply impressive words we hadread in the Confessio Fraternitatis, one of themanifestos of the 17th century Rosicrucianswhich contains many prophecies that are saidto relate to the times we are living in now 2 :God, indeed, hath already sent messengerswhich should testify His will, to wit some newstars which have appeared in Serpentarius andCygnus, the which powerful signs of a greatCouncil shew forth how for all things whichhuman ingenuity discovers, God calls upon Hishidden knowledge, as likewise the Book of Nature,though it stands open truly before all eyes,can be read or understood by only a very few.17th century engraving of ‘The Invisible College’showing the new stars in Cygnus and SerpentariusIn the 17th century, two supernovae (onlyeight have ever been seen with the nakedeye) really did appear in the constellationsof Serpentarius and Cygnus, causing a greatstir, since they were considered to be portentsheralding a new era of enlightenment. Andwe believe that these particular constellationsgenuinely do have special significance for thegreat, transformative journey we are all makingtogether, which is why our swan logo hasa star above its head.In The Cygnus Mystery [see opposite],Andrew Collins writes:There is something very special about theinfluence of the Cygnus constellation on thehuman mindset. It was seen in the past asthe source of cosmic life and death. Our mostdistant ancestors actually believed that life camefrom this region of space, and that the souls ofthe righteous would return there in death. Inmany ways it was the first location of heaven.Returning to our quote from the ConfessioFraternitatis, it also refers to the Book ofNature, and this, too, is significant. Overthe years we had become convinced that thegreat tome I had been shown in my dreamwas not a book in the conventional sense,but the Book of Life, sometimes known asthe Book of Nature or the Book M (standingfor Mundi – Latin for ‘world’). And the reasonwhy it ‘can be read or understood by onlya very few’ is that it is not so much a bookas a language, inscribed in the natural worldaround us and in our own hearts, a languagethat can only be read with the eyes of theawakening soul, and which tells us everythingwe need to know to reach our goal ofTrue Humanhood, one step at a time.So, back to the story. We chuntered onwith our publishing services efforts for a fewyears, and then in 1991 a friend was visitingand happened to mention an old occultnovel we had heard was good and wanted toread. Called The Angel in the West Window,it was all about the Elizabethan magus JohnDee, who, through his trials and tribulations,miscalculations and mistakes eventuallymade a living, vibrant connection withTruth, and with the shining, eternal communityof other souls who have made that sameconnection. Well, the book was available inGerman and other European languages butnot, as far as we knew, in English. So ourfriend said, ‘Why don’t you publish it?’. Towhich we replied, ‘Well, we wouldn’t want topublish something unless we knew we could=C>(4>.V>=(=>&.C-UA4(TE(&]](&A>40/),;(

sell it. How could we be sure there wouldbe a market for the book? Shops probablywouldn’t want many. We would have to findsome way of making direct contact with thepublic.’ None of us could think of a way todo that, so the subject was dropped.A moment we will never forgetBut Geoff carried on thinking about it andthat evening pronounced the fateful words:‘Why don’t we start a book club?’ In thesilence that followed, we both realised thatwe had gathered all the skills we would needto do it, that we could do it, that we woulddo it, and that it would be the best way yetof helping to fulfil the task we had always feltwas calling us. It was an ‘Aha’ moment wewill never forget.Anyway, just a couple of weeks later, as weploughed through piles of catalogues lookingfor books we could sell in our embryonic‘book club’, we saw that, by coincidence,another publisher had just thought of publishingThe Angel of the West Window inEnglish. So all we would have to do was sellit! Dedalus was the name of the publisher,and its owner, George Barrington, has keptthe book in print throughout the last twentyyears, which is why we are able to offer it toyou in this magazine.For the first few years, the Cygnus Reviewwas just twelve pages of black and white,with very few books and fewer features, butit seemed that, right from the start, peoplereally did feel something special when theyopened it. We often used to look at themagazine and wonder why that was – giventhat there was so little in it and it didn’t lookparticularly marvellous. We came to theconclusion that the inspiration and comfortour members have always received from themagazine, while partially stimulated by itsactual content, was also fed and warmed bysomething quite intangible – the energy ofthe overlighting swan itself (we’ll say moreabout the swan another time).Then, in the late 90s, Book Club Associates,the Readers’ Digest and Time Life alldecided it would be a brilliant plan to startmind, body, spirit book clubs. Suddenly, wewere competing with the big boys! That’swhen we learned how good competition isfor businesses. It forces you to stand on tiptoe– to grow, improve, and learn. And that waswhy, in 1999, the Cygnus Review became acolour magazine with a lot more content.In the palm of a great handAnd then, along came Amazon, and withina few years, all three competing book clubshad folded, unable to withstand Amazon’spolicy of putting market share above all else.Little Cygnus, however, remained – partlybecause our small size allowed us to be moreflexible, but mainly because of our determinationnot to swerve from our task. It hasnot been easy, however, and it does not getThe Book, the Swan and the Stareasier, which is why 2012 willat last be the year in whichCygnus is reborn in a formthat takes into account all thechanges in the world and thebook trade, but that allowsus to continue with our mostimportant goal – to share with you what wehave read in the Book of Nature, and to helpyou to learn to read it yourself, to find out allyou need to know for the next step of yourjourney, even if there were no books, even ifthere were no one else on earth who couldguide you.For, as we wrote in our 2012 calendar, ‘Werest in the palm of a great hand. Eternally safe,we can never be lost or go astray, however thingsmay seem. Claire NahmadWhat on Earth are Kick-Ass Angels?When I was contemplating Kick-AssAngels, I was at first baffled by the task theangels had given me. I could feel the needfor such a book, but at the same time Iwas unsure how to go about writing it oreven what its contents might be. I beganto centre myself in the concept of thebook, and, like opening a door onto awhirlwind, the Zoroastrian angels madethemselves known to me!The Zoroastrian angels are thoserevealed to the world by the ancientPersian mage, Zoroaster or Zarathustra.Zoroastrian priests were the famous Magi,known to commune with angels as part oftheir daily rituals. It was, indeed, Zoroasterwho introduced to humanity theconcept of angels as we understand themtoday. The orders of angels,particularly that of the archangelsheaded by Michael, are perceivedin their established guiseas a direct result of Zoroaster’sillumination. In addition, histeachings on the God of Lightand God’s adversary, the Lie,preceded the teachings of all thegreat spiritual traditions, whichecho them throughout theirvarious doctrines.The amesha spentas, the sixmajor archangels according to Zoroaster’svision, appeared to me in the form of thesix-pointed star that so many of us usein our spiritual work. Mithra, Angel ofGlory (not to be confused with Mithras!)was there in the scintillating star,overlighting all, disclosing to me her-hisrevelation of the Golden Twin, our ownhigher self who gathers us up into ourtrue heart centre when we are flaggingand shows us that we are indeed ‘theunconquerable sun’. Each of the six angelswas a pulse point beyond which multitudesof radiant beings thronged. Theirgrace and love and brilliance of unearthlylight were measureless.Dynamic spiritual forceThey revealed to me that they were whatI had conceived of as the ‘kick-ass’ angels– life-transforming angels of dynamicspiritual force that allow us to locate ourhidden ‘prison cells’ and overturn thesentences we have, often unwittingly,imposed upon ourselves. Human energyfrequencies have now reachedfrequency parity with the Earth’sat 3.5 kHz and the end of thelast Epoch allows us to moveinto the start of new cycles ofexistence.There were no fireworks tothe completion of these two events, justa quiet sigh of satisfaction of a job welldone and a quiet acceptance of the turmoilthat the new energy will bring intothe new year.Our new resonanceA great deal of our true past has beendeliberately hidden from us by those whowould attempt to keep control over us.As our levels of consciousness continueto rise to our new resonance, all of theways in which controls have been exertedover us are being exposed and those whoare awakening to the new consciousnessare now more able to see world events forwhat they are.Unfortunately, we are likely to see thesekinds of events continuing for a littlewhile longer as those who exercised thatcontrol misguidedly believe that they stilldo – the recent events in Libya and whatis happening with banking and the Eurobeing prime examples.So what are the rising energy frequenciesactually doing? For some people,there is a realisation that they haveresolved all of their life’s problems andare ready to move on to the final stageof soul reintegration. For others, longignored problems and issues are forcingthemselves to the surface in such a waythat they cannot be ignored any longer –intuition and the chakras need to be paidattention to.
