NOVUSQuo Vad<strong>is</strong>W<strong>in</strong>ter 2006Publ<strong>is</strong>her: Michael Danek,CREditor Fred Briers, CR<strong>Dear</strong> <strong>Bro<strong>the</strong>rs</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>R<strong>is</strong>en</strong> <strong>Lord</strong>,<strong>Advent</strong> <strong>is</strong> a <strong>special</strong> <strong>time</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>year</strong> toreflect upon <strong>the</strong> manifold bless<strong>in</strong>gswhich enhance our daily lives. Th<strong>is</strong><strong>Advent</strong> I am particularly grateful for <strong>the</strong>many ways <strong>in</strong> which our religious familywitnesses to <strong>the</strong> Resurrection <strong>of</strong> our <strong>Lord</strong><strong>in</strong> our many diverse apostolic endeavors.Gratitude to God <strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong>deed an importantpart <strong>of</strong> prepar<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> beauty andglory <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chr<strong>is</strong>tmas season. I wouldlike to share some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ways <strong>in</strong> which<strong>the</strong> bounty <strong>of</strong> our lov<strong>in</strong>g God clearly <strong>is</strong>be<strong>in</strong>g showered upon our prov<strong>in</strong>ce.Th<strong>is</strong> past fall <strong>the</strong> Extended GeneralCouncil <strong>of</strong> our Congregation heldit’s annual meet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> our prov<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>in</strong>Alabama and Florida. It was a wonderfulexperience for our General Curia, <strong>the</strong>prov<strong>in</strong>cials <strong>of</strong> our three prov<strong>in</strong>ces, and <strong>the</strong>regional superior <strong>of</strong> our South Americanregion to grow <strong>in</strong> community. The hospitality extended to <strong>the</strong> ExtendedGeneral Council by our bro<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>south namely, Glen Bapt<strong>is</strong>te, Fred Briers,Ed DuBel, Jacek Junak, Charles Messler(one <strong>of</strong> our newly approved novitiatecandidates), Ted Sosnowski, ManuelWilliams, and George Zieba was <strong>in</strong> oneword-spectacular! Each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> members<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Extended General Councilexpressed to me how happy <strong>the</strong>y werewith <strong>the</strong> welcome and <strong>in</strong>spiration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m<strong>in</strong><strong>is</strong>try that we provide <strong>in</strong> Alabama andFlorida.I am most grateful to our bro<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>in</strong>Alabama and Florida for <strong>the</strong>ir warmand lov<strong>in</strong>g hospitality. The meet<strong>in</strong>gsprovided many challeng<strong>in</strong>g sessionshighlight<strong>in</strong>g our need to plan for ourm<strong>is</strong>sion <strong>in</strong> Tanzania, to prepare for <strong>the</strong> 200th anniversary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> birth <strong>of</strong> BogdanJanski with <strong>the</strong> publication <strong>of</strong> a small biography <strong>in</strong> many languages which will bepubl<strong>is</strong>hed <strong>in</strong> 2007, and many o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>is</strong>sues.After a number <strong>of</strong> meet<strong>in</strong>gs our prov<strong>in</strong>ce’s F<strong>in</strong>ance Committee (R. Balazs, W. Hallas,M. Osuch, F. Rog, M. Wroblewski, and myself), has developed a job description andhired a new part-<strong>time</strong> Prov<strong>in</strong>ce Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Accountant, Marsha Blake, to manage ourprov<strong>in</strong>ce bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>of</strong>fice. Th<strong>is</strong> need was recognized by our last prov<strong>in</strong>cial chapter.Marsha Blake will handle <strong>the</strong> many bus<strong>in</strong>ess needs <strong>of</strong> our prov<strong>in</strong>ce with <strong>the</strong> exception<strong>of</strong> any health <strong>in</strong>surance or related <strong>is</strong>sues. Bro<strong>the</strong>r Bill Hallas, CR has been approvedas our prov<strong>in</strong>ce treasurer and will oversee <strong>the</strong> new Prov<strong>in</strong>ce Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Accountantposition and will take charge <strong>of</strong> health related <strong>is</strong>sues. If you have any questionsregard<strong>in</strong>g health needs or <strong>in</strong>surance , please call Bill Hallas, CR at (773)-465-8352.A huge debt <strong>of</strong> gratitude ought to be extended to our bro<strong>the</strong>r, Marion Wroblewski, who has tirelessly spent over fifteen <strong>year</strong>s serv<strong>in</strong>g as prov<strong>in</strong>ce treasurer which <strong>of</strong>ten<strong>is</strong> a thankless position. Our F<strong>in</strong>ance Committee <strong>is</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g to re-evaluate ourCorporate Investment Policy.A number <strong>of</strong> important formation <strong>is</strong>sues need to be celebrated. Two men, CharlesMessler and Rafal Wasilewski, have been approved for our novitiate which willbeg<strong>in</strong> on January 6, 2007 at our Shenandoah Residence with our bro<strong>the</strong>r, StephenGlab, as <strong>the</strong> Director <strong>of</strong> Novices. Ano<strong>the</strong>r candidate, Michael Kruszewski, from ourbro<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ontario-Kentucky Prov<strong>in</strong>ce, will also jo<strong>in</strong> th<strong>is</strong> novitiate experience. Please keep <strong>the</strong>se men <strong>in</strong> your prayers as <strong>the</strong>y beg<strong>in</strong> th<strong>is</strong> holy <strong>year</strong> <strong>of</strong> d<strong>is</strong>cernment.A tremendous word <strong>of</strong> thanks should be extended to our bro<strong>the</strong>r, Paul Sims, ourprov<strong>in</strong>ce Vocation Director, who has coord<strong>in</strong>ated <strong>the</strong>se men and <strong>the</strong>ir candidacyexperience and application to our prov<strong>in</strong>ce.Paul Sims and Fred Briers cont<strong>in</strong>ue to coord<strong>in</strong>ate our vocation <strong>in</strong>terests. We havefive <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong>dividuals seriously d<strong>is</strong>cern<strong>in</strong>g entrance <strong>in</strong>to our prov<strong>in</strong>ce candidacyprogram for next <strong>year</strong>. Th<strong>is</strong> bless<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> men <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> our religious bro<strong>the</strong>rhoodhas happily necessitated <strong>the</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>ce Formation Comm<strong>is</strong>sion and Prov<strong>in</strong>cial Councilto beg<strong>in</strong> address<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>is</strong>sue <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>sufficient hous<strong>in</strong>g for our post-novitiate program<strong>in</strong> St. Lou<strong>is</strong>. Our bro<strong>the</strong>r, Gary Hogan, <strong>the</strong> director <strong>of</strong> our sem<strong>in</strong>ary, <strong>is</strong> lead<strong>in</strong>g athorough study <strong>of</strong> possibilities for <strong>the</strong> future <strong>of</strong> our formation program <strong>in</strong> St. Lou<strong>is</strong>.Very soon <strong>the</strong> 2007 Prov<strong>in</strong>cial Chapter Plann<strong>in</strong>g Committee will beg<strong>in</strong> to meet andcoord<strong>in</strong>ate <strong>the</strong> needed <strong>is</strong>sues that must be addressed before our Prov<strong>in</strong>cial Chapter. The dates <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chapter are July 30-August 3, 2007, at Resurrection Center <strong>in</strong>Woodstock, IL. The prov<strong>in</strong>ce Election Committee (R. Balazs, E. Jastzrebski, and M.Osuch) have already met and begun to prepare a proposal to ass<strong>is</strong>t <strong>in</strong> streaml<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<strong>the</strong> amount <strong>of</strong> <strong>time</strong> spent <strong>of</strong> election <strong>is</strong>sues at <strong>the</strong> previous Chapter. Recogniz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>fact that many members <strong>of</strong> our prov<strong>in</strong>ce might not be able to travel twice with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>

summer months to Woodstock, Il, we will still attempt to <strong>of</strong>fer aretreat experience for our prov<strong>in</strong>ce from June 11-15, 2007 at ourCenter <strong>in</strong> Woodstock, IL. y: Greg Helm<strong>in</strong>ski, CRKwa j<strong>in</strong>a la Baba, na la Mwana,na la Roho Mtakatifu.Am<strong>in</strong>a.In <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>r, and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Son,and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit.Amen.Every journey we take <strong>in</strong> life <strong>is</strong> one thatwe pray that God will be with us and, paradoxically, that we may also be able t<strong>of</strong><strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lord</strong> <strong>in</strong> a deeper way. We start with<strong>the</strong> sign <strong>of</strong> our faith, <strong>the</strong> sign <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cross. Then our journey opens us up to new ways<strong>of</strong> meet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>R<strong>is</strong>en</strong> Chr<strong>is</strong>t, much likethose d<strong>is</strong>ciples on <strong>the</strong> road to Emmaus. My month <strong>in</strong> Africa, specifically,Butiama, Tanzania was a journey (or <strong>in</strong>Swahili, SAFARI) <strong>of</strong> faith, d<strong>is</strong>covery,and d<strong>is</strong>cernment. Special thanks to ourprov<strong>in</strong>cial council, who gave me perm<strong>is</strong>sionto go and explore, to <strong>the</strong> m<strong>is</strong>sionaries withwhom we v<strong>is</strong>ited and to Fr. Steve Thoma,CR, who accompanied me on th<strong>is</strong> journey.“What was it like? What was <strong>the</strong> hardestpart? What was <strong>the</strong> most enjoyable part?”are some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> questions that I get askedfrom family and friends. Let me try toanswer <strong>the</strong>se questions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> next fewwords and, hopefully, give you a flavor <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> graced <strong>time</strong> that I spent <strong>in</strong> Africa.First and foremost, <strong>the</strong> image <strong>of</strong> a Safari,a journey on challeng<strong>in</strong>g roads, <strong>is</strong> anoverarch<strong>in</strong>g image. From <strong>the</strong> <strong>time</strong> wereached Nairobi, Kenya with wild big citytraffic to <strong>the</strong> t<strong>in</strong>y, very bumpy, dirt roadsthrough <strong>the</strong> rural countryside <strong>of</strong> Tanzania,we were very much on <strong>the</strong> move. Even ourfirst Sunday <strong>in</strong> Butiama was spent travel<strong>in</strong>gto three outpost church build<strong>in</strong>gs, each withits own character <strong>of</strong> architecture, music, and texture <strong>of</strong> friendl<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> people. There were wedd<strong>in</strong>gs at one, a v<strong>is</strong>it to anelderly catech<strong>is</strong>t, who had recently buriedh<strong>is</strong> wife with <strong>the</strong> grave <strong>in</strong> h<strong>is</strong> own backyardat ano<strong>the</strong>r, and stories about a gold m<strong>in</strong>eand <strong>the</strong> tumultuous relationship that ithad with <strong>the</strong> local community <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> third. The <strong>time</strong> we spent <strong>in</strong> Butiama, our hostskept us mov<strong>in</strong>g to see par<strong>is</strong>hes, diocesan<strong>of</strong>fices, schools, neighbor<strong>in</strong>g par<strong>is</strong>hes, <strong>the</strong>ca<strong>the</strong>drals, Maryknoll m<strong>is</strong>sionaries, bothKARIBUmen and women and <strong>the</strong> sick and suffer<strong>in</strong>gpar<strong>is</strong>honers at home and <strong>in</strong> hospitals. Trulywe experienced a rich cross section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Body <strong>of</strong> Chr<strong>is</strong>t <strong>in</strong> East Africa.Secondly, My memory holds an impressionthat we m<strong>in</strong><strong>is</strong>ter to a very rural community<strong>in</strong> Butiama, Tanzania. Surrounded byfarms, quite far from <strong>the</strong> big city we werewith country folk. Life was much slowerand simpler than what I am used to <strong>in</strong>Chicago, IL. Some<strong>time</strong>s electricity <strong>is</strong> notavailable. One Sunday someone gave agoat to <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>rs and “Billy” was oureven<strong>in</strong>g meal. Monkeys, almost as plentifulas our squirrels, v<strong>is</strong>it <strong>the</strong> rectory to <strong>the</strong>chagr<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pastor who <strong>in</strong>timidates<strong>the</strong>m with h<strong>is</strong> air rifle. The songs <strong>of</strong> birdsm<strong>in</strong>gle with <strong>the</strong> sound <strong>of</strong> music com<strong>in</strong>gfrom all night wedd<strong>in</strong>g celebrations. But th<strong>is</strong> little rural village <strong>is</strong> not a typicalcounty place for <strong>the</strong> first President <strong>of</strong>Tanzania, Julius Nyerere was born <strong>the</strong>re andh<strong>is</strong> wife cont<strong>in</strong>ues to be an active member<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Catholic community. She lives whatmight be seen as a home befitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> aformer First Lady. Walimu (Teacher) <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong>affection title <strong>of</strong> former President Nyerereand he highly revered and respected. Infact h<strong>is</strong> cause for beatification has been<strong>in</strong>troduced so <strong>the</strong>re <strong>is</strong> a real pride among<strong>the</strong> Catholics for <strong>the</strong>ir contribution <strong>of</strong> sucha sa<strong>in</strong>tly and respected statesman. For all <strong>of</strong> its down to earth friendl<strong>in</strong>ess,I experienced for <strong>the</strong> first <strong>time</strong> <strong>in</strong> my lifebe<strong>in</strong>g part <strong>of</strong> a m<strong>in</strong>ority. White peoplestick out like—well a sore thumb, so tospeak. One Maryknoller shared that one <strong>of</strong>h<strong>is</strong> colleagues who m<strong>in</strong><strong>is</strong>tered <strong>in</strong> Africa foralmost 50 <strong>year</strong>s, when asked what would bea good gift that he could receive from <strong>the</strong><strong>Lord</strong>, replied that for 10 m<strong>in</strong>utes he wouldlike to be able to th<strong>in</strong>k like an African! Icould concur by only stat<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong>re <strong>is</strong> somuch to learn about <strong>the</strong>se people and <strong>the</strong>irculture.Parochial m<strong>in</strong><strong>is</strong>try <strong>in</strong> Butiama <strong>is</strong>complicated with <strong>the</strong> prevalent languagebe<strong>in</strong>g Swahili and <strong>the</strong> beautiful traditions<strong>of</strong> dance and movement be<strong>in</strong>g an essentialpart <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> liturgical celebrations. We werepresent for <strong>the</strong> feast <strong>of</strong> Corpus Chr<strong>is</strong>tiand had a rich experience <strong>of</strong> Euchar<strong>is</strong>ticProcessions through villages, some <strong>of</strong> whichwere populated by many Moslems, whowere wonder<strong>in</strong>g what are those Catholicsdo<strong>in</strong>g now. The experience <strong>of</strong> see<strong>in</strong>galtars with ro<strong>of</strong>-like cover<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>in</strong>cense,flower petals be<strong>in</strong>g scattered by younggirls dressed <strong>in</strong> beautiful dresses, parentscarry<strong>in</strong>g children on <strong>the</strong>ir backs walk<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong> procession, and <strong>the</strong> fervent devotion <strong>of</strong>faith- filled people express<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>mselves<strong>in</strong> movement were all highlights <strong>of</strong> myliturgical experience <strong>in</strong> Africa. It actuallyrem<strong>in</strong>ded me <strong>of</strong> my childhood experiences<strong>of</strong> Corpus Chr<strong>is</strong>ti that I had grow<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>in</strong>Bucktown at St. Hedwigs <strong>in</strong> Chicago, IL.The s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g and reverence was a wonderfulexperience rem<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g me <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> concept <strong>of</strong>a safari and <strong>the</strong> walk <strong>of</strong> faith that we all take<strong>in</strong> th<strong>is</strong> life.Th<strong>is</strong> was a wonderful way to live out ourchar<strong>is</strong>m as Resurrection<strong>is</strong>ts, walk<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong><strong>R<strong>is</strong>en</strong> Jesus, accompany<strong>in</strong>g Him and eacho<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> a spirit <strong>of</strong> pra<strong>is</strong>e and thanksgiv<strong>in</strong>gfor <strong>the</strong> many wonderful gifts that we havereceived.Educational M<strong>in</strong><strong>is</strong>try was <strong>the</strong> most<strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g and held <strong>the</strong> most prom<strong>is</strong>e forme. We v<strong>is</strong>ited many schools, both publicand private. Just meet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> studentsconv<strong>in</strong>ced me that I would have gifts to sharewith <strong>the</strong>m and that might be wonderfulway to carry my Resurrection<strong>is</strong>t m<strong>is</strong>sion asan educatorThe government has developed a projectto have better education <strong>in</strong> Tanzania andhas named it <strong>the</strong> Butiama Project. Theyhave some big plans and have <strong>in</strong>vited <strong>the</strong>B<strong>is</strong>hop <strong>of</strong> Musoma to f<strong>in</strong>d some religiouscommunity to help <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> th<strong>is</strong> endeavor. There are four new schools <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area <strong>of</strong>Buitama be<strong>in</strong>g built, one <strong>of</strong> which <strong>is</strong> a boys’secondary school. The secondary school <strong>is</strong>conducted <strong>in</strong> Engl<strong>is</strong>h and <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>is</strong>ready to go. They just need <strong>the</strong> staff and toassemble a student body. It <strong>is</strong> to be a modelschool and will <strong>in</strong>volve <strong>the</strong> local communitye<strong>special</strong>ly <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area <strong>of</strong> agricultural studiesand farm<strong>in</strong>g local land. The CR S<strong>is</strong>tershave accepted <strong>the</strong> adm<strong>in</strong><strong>is</strong>tration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>girls’ secondary school and two s<strong>is</strong>ters fromPoland are on <strong>the</strong>ir way <strong>the</strong>re, as well as Sr.Stephanie Blaski, CR from Chicago.

Gerald Watt, CRI just v<strong>is</strong>ited a n<strong>in</strong>ety-n<strong>in</strong>e <strong>year</strong> old resident<strong>of</strong> Johnsburg whose fa<strong>the</strong>r moved here fromW<strong>is</strong>cons<strong>in</strong> to start a blacksmith shop <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>1890s.“When those new ‘mach<strong>in</strong>es’ came out,”she said, “my fa<strong>the</strong>r decided to become aChevrolet dealer and I used to drive <strong>the</strong>cars down from Janesville (W<strong>is</strong>cons<strong>in</strong>) toJohnsburg. Started when I was sixteen <strong>year</strong>sold. I guess my fa<strong>the</strong>r could see that horseswere on <strong>the</strong> way out.”Agnes Freund remembers when St. John’sschool burned down over a half a century agoand she remembers how fast <strong>the</strong> communityrebuilt it. She recalls when Johnsburg wasjust a crossroads and <strong>the</strong> town tavern was <strong>the</strong>most important landmark around. “O<strong>the</strong>rthan our beautiful church, <strong>the</strong>re were justfarms as far as you could see.”“Everyth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>is</strong> changed now. All mybro<strong>the</strong>rs and s<strong>is</strong>ters are gone. My friends, too. But I have...I th<strong>in</strong>k… about fortygreat-grandchildren.” She shows me a fourgeneration photograph <strong>of</strong> her daughter andgranddaughter stand<strong>in</strong>g on ei<strong>the</strong>r side <strong>of</strong> herwhile she sits <strong>in</strong> a rocker hold<strong>in</strong>g her latestgrandchild, a raven-haired baby boy, abouttwo weeks old.I have been here for two months --longenough to realize that th<strong>is</strong> par<strong>is</strong>h founded byGerman immigrants <strong>in</strong> 1843 has deep rootshere. Catholic to <strong>the</strong> core, Johnsburgers love<strong>the</strong>ir par<strong>is</strong>h and love <strong>the</strong>ir town.As Mrs. Freund remarked, though, th<strong>in</strong>gs arechang<strong>in</strong>g.McHenry County <strong>is</strong> grow<strong>in</strong>g rapidly <strong>in</strong>population and <strong>the</strong> farms are be<strong>in</strong>g swallowedup <strong>in</strong> hous<strong>in</strong>g developments. On a typical Sunday, St. John <strong>the</strong> Bapt<strong>is</strong>tChurch <strong>is</strong> filled with old <strong>time</strong> par<strong>is</strong>hionersand lots <strong>of</strong> new families who have movedhere to get away from <strong>the</strong> city. The newmembers have found that <strong>the</strong>y could builda beautiful large home here at about half <strong>of</strong>what it would cost <strong>in</strong> Chicago. They like <strong>the</strong> beauty <strong>of</strong> a traditional gothicchurch and St. John’s certa<strong>in</strong>ly fulfills thatneed. It <strong>is</strong> an <strong>of</strong>ficial h<strong>is</strong>torical landmark.St. John <strong>the</strong> Bapt<strong>is</strong>t Church, Johnsburg, Ill<strong>in</strong>o<strong>is</strong>So, how did we Resurrection<strong>is</strong>ts get here?B<strong>is</strong>hop Doran responded to <strong>the</strong> Prov<strong>in</strong>cialCouncil’s <strong>in</strong>quiry about a possible apostolatenear Resurrection Retreat House andresurrection par<strong>is</strong>h <strong>in</strong> Woodstock by <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>gus th<strong>is</strong> wonderful par<strong>is</strong>h.Besides <strong>the</strong> church itself. We have anelementary school, pre-school througheighth grade which began its one hundredand sixty-third <strong>year</strong> <strong>of</strong> operation last week. Many <strong>of</strong> our adult par<strong>is</strong>hioners are graduates<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> school and proud <strong>of</strong> it.The par<strong>is</strong>h complex <strong>in</strong>cludes a large gym,par<strong>is</strong>h <strong>of</strong>fice complex, a separate religiouseducation build<strong>in</strong>g, and a par<strong>is</strong>h cemetery.I am bounc<strong>in</strong>g around <strong>in</strong> a thirteen roomhouse after liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> one room at Gordon th<strong>is</strong>past <strong>year</strong>.With Rich Grek at Resurrection par<strong>is</strong>h(and Retreat Center) and Steve Glab at <strong>the</strong>house—soon to be novitiate--<strong>in</strong> Bull Valleyand me, here at St. John’s we have a canonicalhouse. We meet as <strong>of</strong>ten as we can.My goal here at St. John’s <strong>is</strong> to ass<strong>is</strong>t <strong>the</strong>par<strong>is</strong>h <strong>in</strong> evangelization and to spread <strong>the</strong>hope <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> resurrection to a people eager tohear <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> spirituality <strong>of</strong> our Congregation. As long as Our <strong>Lord</strong> gives me health and <strong>the</strong>prov<strong>in</strong>ce asks me to do th<strong>is</strong>, I will fulfill mym<strong>in</strong><strong>is</strong>try here. One <strong>of</strong> my dreams <strong>is</strong> that <strong>the</strong> people <strong>of</strong> St.John’s will grow to love our Congregationand its char<strong>is</strong>m. Already, Mike Danek andPaul Sims have celebrated <strong>the</strong> Euchar<strong>is</strong>t withus. Steve Glab, a well-known C.R. from h<strong>is</strong>work at Marian Central High School <strong>in</strong>McHenry helps out with Masses regularlyand with great enthusiasm. The people areexcited about <strong>the</strong>se new faces and about <strong>the</strong>message <strong>of</strong> hope that we preach. They want to meet all <strong>of</strong> you. Please cometo v<strong>is</strong>it and celebrate <strong>the</strong> Euchar<strong>is</strong>t with us. Ihave enough extra bedrooms for four or five<strong>of</strong> you, at one <strong>time</strong>.The sett<strong>in</strong>g here <strong>is</strong> beautiful. I love to sit <strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cemetery among <strong>the</strong> firtrees and pray morn<strong>in</strong>g prayer. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>large marble markers nearby reads “Freund.”Th<strong>is</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g Agnes Freund approach<strong>in</strong>g herone hundredth birthday gestured toward St.John’s up on <strong>the</strong> hill three blocks away: “I wasbaptized <strong>the</strong>re, made my First Communionand Confirmation <strong>the</strong>re and was married<strong>the</strong>re. All my children and most <strong>of</strong> mygrandchildren and great-grandchildren werebaptized <strong>the</strong>re.” She looks at me with brighteyes and a warm smile. “And, I’ll be buried<strong>the</strong>re.”
