She looked up at the sky. “If you asked me what part of the sky to look in for Orion’s Belt orSagittarius, I’d have no idea, but if you want me to follow someone through Diagon Alleywithout their knowing they’re being followed, I’m the one for the job.”He grinned. “Why’d you say that?”She ducked her head. “Because before Lee and I were going out, I saw him in Diagon Alleyshopping for school supplies during the summer and I followed him because the twins hadtold me he had a girlfriend and I wanted to see if he was going to meet her. Turned out they’dbeen lying to me; they knew I fancied him and they were trying to get us together. Sneaks. But Lee never suspected I was following him. People can be really daft, you know?”He smiled at her. “So you know I’m right.” It wasn’t a question. “When the time comes--whatare you going to tell your dad?”She sighed and leaned back with her eyes closed. “I don’t know. I suppose that’s what I’mreally doing here this summer. Trying to get dad to see that I really am an adult, that I canmake these decisions for myself. Spend a little more time with him before he disowns me...”She turned, and on seeing Harry’s frown, she gave a feeble smile. “Joking. I know hewouldn’t do that. But--oh, Harry. The way he goes on, sometimes. Did you know that his bestfriends arrested him? Not your mum--she was on holiday. And these so-called ‘friends’treated him like any other criminal. I know, I know, technically they should have. But--but hewas one of them. And he was protecting me. The way they suddenly didn’t seem to think hewas the same person, the way they took him away--that’s something he’s still not gotten over. Not that he’s gotten over Mum; even after sixteen years. I just wish...I wish he could behappy. The only time he seems happy is when he’s working, but I think that’s just adistraction. And he won’t talk about prison; I’ve tried asking him. The only thing he’s saidabout it was that if he’d known what he was sending people to, he might not have been such agood Auror. And now I’m supposed to tell him that’s what I want to do with my life?”Harry put his hand over hers. “Most of the people in Azkaban really deserve to be there. It’strue that there need to be some changes in wizarding law, so we’re not punishing people whoare defending others, but that’s a problem with the law, not with the people enforcing it.”She grasped Harry’s hand. Her voice had become very soft. “All those years when dad was inprison, I thought of his being an Auror, and how I would make him proud of me, how I wouldbe just like him when I grew up. I played at being an Auror with my friends and for a while Itried to get them to call me ‘Aurora,’ since I hated the name Katie....”“I rather like the name Katie,” he said quietly. Suddenly he realized that they were sitting veryclose together, their faces only inches away. They looked at each other for what seemed avery long time.“Do you want to go to Kew Gardens?” Katie asked suddenly, in a strangled sort of voice.Harry backed up and cleared his throat, taking his hand from hers.“Um--all right. I’ve never been.”“We--we could go tomorrow.”“What happened to relaxing tomorrow?”50
