Arts & Entertainment Music Dept. Brings Latin/Czech Jazz Artist to Campus Latin/Czech Jazz Artist Marta Topferova (Photo Credit: Benjiman Kaufmann) By Liza Eckert Staff Writer The LIU Music Department hosted a jazz clinic last Tuesday featuring vocalist and cuatro player Marta Topferova with her group, Trio Lyra. Along with Topferova, the group consists of Pedro Giraudo on bass, Roland Satterwhite on violin, and Franco Pinna on percussion. Topferova is a native of the Czech Republic who has been living in the U.S. since the late 1980s. She was drawn to Latin American music at an early age and began writing and performing songs in Spanish along with her native Czech. She has performed at many famous clubs and festivals, including The Blue Note in New York and the London Jazz Festival. Topferova has performed for the United Nations as well as on multiple international television and radio programs. The group performed several of Topferova’s original compositions. They opened with a piece called “The Fireflies,” in the rhythm of cueca, which is native to Argentina and Chile. This composition combined jazz and the cueca’s rhythm with classical influences apparent in the violin solo. Another composition of Topferova’s was called “La Amapola,” which means “The Poppy Flower.” This piece was written in the zamba style, which is a slower version of the cueca. Both styles are part of Argentinean folklore. “Corazon Monchado,” or “The Stained Heart,” was written in the Venezuelan meringue style. This style is a more complex five-eight rhythm that heavily features the cuatro, a Venezuelan instrument that resembles a small, four-stringed guitar. To demonstrate the meringue style, members of the group played their separate parts. The bass and the cuatro each play on off beats in meringue style, which initially began as street music. Topferova spoke of being influenced by different musicians, especially Simón Díaz, a Venezuelan composer. The group played a piece by Díaz in the style of joropo. Joropo traditional- Seawanhaka ly features cuatro, maracas, and South American harps. Czech music plays a role in the group’s sound as well. “If you pay close attention to the melodies, my Czech influence is there” said Topferova. The group fielded questions from the small audience. They were asked about their composition methods, which Topferova said are a “mixture of written things with space for improvisation.” She also said she will sometimes write parts for the group and will frequently allow for collaboration, especially when writing in styles more familiar to other musicians. Student participation was encouraged during a Cuban song. Two audience members, one playing the saxophone and one playing the piano, joined the group. The last original composition the full group played was a gaita, which is an instrumental piece frequently played during Christmas. According to Topferova, it has “similarities to other six-eight rhythms but subtle differences with bass lines that make it distinctive.” This piece had a rhythmic opening that went into a strong violin melody. It was soft and quiet at times with a crescendo into being up-tempo. Topferova composed her first English songs this year. She played one of them at the clinic. It was a ballad played on a classical six-string guitar, a departure from her Latin influenced jazz. The members of the group come from varied musical backgrounds. Franco Pinna and Pedro Giraudo are both Argentinean. Giraudo has his own group, the Pedro Giraudo Jazz Orchestra. Roland Satterwhite is from Canada and was working as a biologist when he joined a group playing Cuban and South American music. He also records and performs as a solo artist. Kate Weare Experiments Dance at Kumble By Leonica Valentine Staff Writer Afternoons at LIU along with the Dance Department hosted a performance by the Kate Weare Company in Kumble Theater on March 5. Weare, a young choreographer, has been described in the New York Times as helping to define the next generation of dance makers. She was recently awarded a Joyce Soho Residency and in May, 2007, was also awarded top prize at the A.W.A.R.D show for her duet Drop Down. Weare did not perform during the show. Instead her company performed excerpts of a work- in -progress titled Bridge of Sighs. Performing for the crowd were dancers Adrian Clarke, Douglas Gillespie (the newest addition to the Kate Weare Company) and Leslie Kraus. He majored in dance and choreography at Connecticut College and has worked with many experts. Clark performed most of the excerpts with Leslie Kraus, a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University, who holds a Bachelor’s in Dance and Choreography. Kraus also joined the company in 2005 and recently participated in a music video for Lauren Hoffman’s debut album “Choreography”. Douglas Gillespie started dancing when he was 17. He went to Florida State University to refine his craft and received a BFA. Afterwards he began working with choreographers Ben Munisteri, Heather McArdle and Tennile Lambert.
