Sequence 1 Values in EducationMark was an incredibly passionate man <strong>and</strong> held real qualities <strong>of</strong> concern for fellowhuman beings. He set up outst<strong>and</strong>ing links with a school in South Africa in order <strong>to</strong>improve <strong>the</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir lives. When speaking <strong>to</strong> him it is his warmth <strong>and</strong> care thatreally shines <strong>through</strong>.I <strong>of</strong>fer one example <strong>of</strong> a dialogue I exchanged with him via email on <strong>the</strong> 26 th February2004, as I attempted <strong>to</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>r refine my own <strong>education</strong>al value <strong>of</strong> living <strong>myself</strong><strong>through</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs. This dialogue demonstrates my living <strong>through</strong> Mark: Mark isengaging with my idea <strong>of</strong> living <strong>myself</strong> <strong>through</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs, <strong>and</strong> reflects on this creativelyfor his own new underst<strong>and</strong>ings <strong>of</strong> this <strong>to</strong> emerge within his own language. This isano<strong>the</strong>r example <strong>of</strong> my attempts <strong>to</strong> empower <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>through</strong> giving <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong>ir ownvoice within this text. Mark commented:‘SimonI knew it would come. I have been thinking about this idea <strong>of</strong> yours. I amthinking about it in relation <strong>to</strong> my dissertation on ‘presencing’ <strong>and</strong> mindfulnessetc.. I am interpreting it as in my words - <strong>How</strong> I am influenced by o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>and</strong>how I graft <strong>the</strong> traits/personality/characteristics <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs on <strong>to</strong> my own livingpresence?Is this how you see it?<strong>How</strong> did you first come up with <strong>the</strong> phrase?Mark’I reply:‘Dear MarkGood day <strong>of</strong>f in <strong>the</strong> snow?Great <strong>to</strong> hear this. I have attached an extract from my PhD were I am talkingabout <strong>the</strong> moment <strong>and</strong> also how I am now moving on with my underst<strong>and</strong>ing.My latest addition <strong>to</strong> my underst<strong>and</strong>ing is arguing that this is a 'working class'value instilled in<strong>to</strong> me by my parents as a result <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir experiences <strong>and</strong>values.
