WELCOME TO DEBORAH’S INCUNABULA for Autumn 2007
This is the time of year when we welcome back the docents after
the long and hot summer. Education is critical to what the Museum
is and does. Soon after the school children return to school, the
docents return to lead them in tours of the art. Because some
docents do not return until later, those that do return are very
busy. We are grateful for all that they do and have done. Many wonderful,
wonderful people have been and are involved with the docent
efforts. Much hard work has gone into creating a good art experience
for the children. Docents are our link with the school
children so that their experience is one they won’t forget.
A sticker came to the museum saying, “art saves lives”. I know
there are times that young people have stayed in school because of art
classes (another reason to always teach art in the schools) and that
people in prison and similar horrible circumstances have stayed human
because they could create, so perhaps it is true.
Our aim is for people to be able to come and experience art first
hand at the st. george art Museum. We created the Adult study center
so that visitors can learn more about what is on view, in addition to
art in general. We created the family discovery center, so that families
could learn about art together. We created the care for YOUR art
so that people could learn about caring for their own collections.
We are always working on projects to enhance the museum experience.
Indeed this tenth anniversary year, we (staff, advisory board &
all museum supporters) have worked hard to raise funds to acquire
art and to raise awareness of the need for gifts of art. The 2007: legacy
ii for the next ten years (inspired by the centennial legacy project
of 1996) is the result of these efforts which will continue to flourish
to provide a permanent collection that grows with our community.
The collection will then be available to exhibit on a rotating basis
(see the final pages for those involved in both legacy endeavors). The
growing collection will be an invaluable resource to the docents
and everyone in our quest to bring art and culture to our thriving
area.
We hope that you will continue to keep the museum in your
plans, and we Thank you for your support.
October 6 to December 22 The Legacy Gallery will feature 2007: Legacy II for the Next Ten Years,
Upcoming Exhibits & Events
Mestizo Serioes: Danza de los Artesanos by Amado Maurillo Pena Jr.
The Southern Utah Watercolor Society (SUWS) has an active dues paying
membership of over 80 talented artists from basic beginners to professionals located in
Utah as well as southern Nevada. Two to three times per year they hold professional
workshops. They have contributed over 150 quality art books to the new St. George
branch of the Washington County Library. The SUWS artists can be seen at both the
ongoing Staircase Gallery in Zion’s Bank in downtown St. George and the Rim Rock Gallery
at the Dixie Regional Medical Center. For more information please send inquiries to
SUWS, P.O. Box 1127, St. George, UT 84771.
The Dixie Quilt Guild was formed in 1983 by a group of eleven quilters in St. George
who shared their love of quilting. Their mission is to encourage, promote and preserve the
art of quilt making. They now have a membership of 185 + women and men of all ages.
The guild welcomes new members with meetings at the County Library on the first
Saturday of each month at 10:30. In 2007 the guild hosted its first quilt show, which was
a great success drawing in non-quilters and quilters alike. The Dixie Quilt Guild has
succeeded in putting St. George on the map in the national quilting community.
Through these exhibits, the St. George Art Museum is looking to strengthen the arts in the
St. George area, encourage membership in these art organizations, and to foster
cooperation, awareness, and connections both with the groups and the public.
Don’t miss First Night, December 31, at the Art Museum where you can view the Quilt
exhibit and see related student art, and participate in the theme: A Quilt Explosion:
Focusing on art as a significant part of the 1996 Utah statehood
centennial celebration, legacy combines a visual presentation by
respected local artists, with significant historical information.
The art & history centennial project was initiated by the st. George
visual arts committee, a sub-committee under the st. George arts
commission. The goal was to promote the visual arts in Dixie & to
provide a permanent collection of 12 historical paintings for the
st. George art museum. Inspiration for the project is attributed to
artist Farrell collett, who, over many years, stressed the need for a
collection of regional historical paintings. His knowledge of the
weber state university’s bicentennial art collection, his shared
experience & enthusiasm, encouraged the committee to forge ahead
in this direction.
Legacy II
2007
For the next ten years
Was inspired by the original legacy project that increased the permanent
collection of the st. George art museum by 12 paintings. Ten
years later, Legacy ii seeks to significantly enlarge our holdings,
especially of early area art, western & national park art, noted Utah
artists, more art by artists of note in the collection, artists who
should be but are not in the collection & art that goes beyond.
The St. George Art Museum expresses our
Grateful thanks to all who supported the museum in this tenth
anniversary year in the beautiful pioneer center for the arts. We more
than “filled the ten frames” (1 for each of the ten years) with
acquisitions & gifts.
