CL20 Rear CoolerNew Generation ComputerRoom CoolingTechnical Data

Overview and PrincipleData centres are the powerhouse of today’s globaleconomy, without modern computing power appliedto all facets of today’s advanced economies, thequality of life would be very different. However great the benefits, there is one unfortunatefact that today’s data centres are highly inefficient, intheir use of energy and their subsequent effect on theglobal climate.ColdLogik replaces the traditional approach to datacentre cooling, allowing loads of up to 45kW percabinet with the added benefit of removing real estateproblems inherent with hot aisle cold aisle and aislecontainment designs. The waste heat generated by equipment within thecabinet is removed at source by water cooling, withoutthe risk of leakage in the data centre by utilising theleak prevention system.ColdLogik allows cooling water temperatures to risefrom the traditional 6ºC to between 14ºC & 21ºC;reducing chiller size and energy costs and increasingthe availability of energy efficient ‘free cooling’.The ColdLogik Management System ‘CMS’ allowsthe doors to operate individually or as a system tomaintain the room at the correct temperature evenwith external heat loads and eliminates the riskof condensation.2

The complete solutionto all your cooling needsCL20 Rear CoolerCL20 Rear Coolers are fitted to the back of anenclosure typically being IEC 297 3 and EIA STD 310compliant. The Coolers have been designed to removeheat generated by the active equipment directly atsource thus preventing hot exhaust air entering intothe room, ensuring optimum thermal and energyperformance.Ambient air is pulled into the cabinet via the activeequipment fans. The hot exhaust air produced by theactive equipment then passes over a heat exchangermatrix either by its own velocity or pulled through viaEC centrifugal fans mounted within the door; heat isthen transferred and rejected to coolant. The resultingchilled air then passes back into the room at thepredetermined room ambient temperature. The CL20 Rear Cooler is available in both passive andactive models, with the passive version relying solelyupon the active equipment fans producing enough airvolume to, in effect ‘self cool’.The CL20 Rear Cooler has a number of applicationsand fit out scenarios such as being sited withinan existing data centre, working in harmony withthe incumbent computer room air-conditioning,providing high density cooling, a reduction in energyconsumption and the removal of hot spot problems. To achieve this the Coolers can either be retrofittedto existing ‘OEM’ cabinets using an interface frameor fitted directly to a ColdLogik compliant USpace6210 cabinet. However, to gain the optimum energy performancefrom a ColdLogik solution the CL20 Rear Coolershould be deployed as a single source solution i.e.the Coolers should be used to control the entirecomputer room/data centre without the need ofany additional air-conditioning products, includingretrofit scenarios.3

Overview and PrincipleColdLogik Management System ‘CMS’The key element to controlling the room environment is theCMS; each rear cooler is intelligently managed for optimumefficiency by embedded computers that continually adjustthe operational parameters in response to the heat removaldemands placed on the system. By making continual loadadjustments the CMS Controllers maintain the room ambienttemperature.ChillerOur chiller systems use the latest technology with either high efficiency scrollcompressors or oil less magnetically driven centrifugal compressors both with highEER and ESEER energy figures. Our custom built units from 10 to 2500kW can caterfor any ambient from -40ºC to +55ºC or adverse environmental conditions. Thechillers can be supplied complete as a stand-alone package with pumps and tanksor as part of a larger system. The chiller controls communicate directly with theColdLogik system controller and can vary the water temperature as required.Free Cooling ModuleFree cooling modules can be supplied as a factory fitted extra within the chillercubicle when space is at premium or as a separate self-contained unit. All the unitsare designed to the closest ambient for the desired system water temperature whichat worse case is only 3ºC. Our free coolers are all fitted with inverter driven energyefficient fans to increase energy saving when ambient falls below the point of freecooling. A free cooling module can be fitted to an existing facility when changing froma standard CRAC to a ColdLogik system.4

The complete solutionto all your cooling needsCL20 Rear CoolerLeak Prevention System ‘LPS’The patent pending LPS works by putting the data centre loop including therear coolers on a negative pressure circuit the whole data centre is safe frompotential leaks in places where it can be least afforded. In the unlikely event saya coupling became loose or a hole was drilled into a pipe, air would be pulledinto the gap/hole, thereby preventing water from escaping. The resulting airnow in the circuit is drawn through to a tank inside or outside the chiller, whereit is finally vented out of the system and prevented from continuing backaround the loop. Inline sensors detect a pressure drop this in turn provides awarning alerting the user to the problem. Importantly the ColdLogik systemwill continue to work, with no notable effect to its cooling capabilities. As withall aspects of the ColdLogik system the LPS can be retrofitted to an existingcircuit and is modular in design and therefore scalable, so as your data centregrows so can ColdLogik.Cooling Distribution Unit ‘CL150’In many cases it is necessary to tap off an existing chiller which already supplieschilled water to other on site services at 6˚C. If chilled water from the primarycircuit were to remain at this temperature condensate would be induced withinthe coolers. The CL150 Cooling Distribution Unit ‘CDU’ has been designed toprovide close control cooling to the rear coolers eliminating the potential ofcondensate. The process side, otherwise known as the secondary circuit isa sealed pressurised system with the heat extracted from the coolers beingrejected to a raw chilled water circuit via a stainless steel plate heat exchanger.5

CL20 Rear Cooler RangeProduct DefinitionsCL20 C4 Rear CoolerAvailable in three variants; each of the C4’s arecapable of 25kW maximum ‘sensible cooling’.The performance of any coil relies upon airflowpassing over the coil matrix, but in the case of theC4 variants, which are supplied passive (i.e. noactive fans fitted as standard) they are howeverpreconfigured to allow for fans to be retrofitted. For the optimum performance an airflow of3100m³/h evenly spread over the coil is required. Most equipment manufactures are beginning toproduce increasingly energy efficient product, onearea in particular is the type of fans being used.An example of this is the new highly energy efficientDell 1U servers, which produce a negligible volumeof air. To overcome this problem the CL20 C4range is equipped to allow fans to be retrofittedpost installation.CL20 C4ncThe C4nc is the basic version of the rear cooler withno fan management system, no communicationprotocol and no coolant control, however theretrofitting of thermostatically controlled fans doesoffer some degree of room ambient air control;Fixed speed fans are also available.CL20 C4ccThe C4cc has the additional ability to control the flowrate of coolant around the coil, when combined withoptional thermostatically controlled fans the C4cc canbe programmed to control the air off temperature; thisin turn can help to control the overall room ambienttemperature. Additionally the C4cc can be set up toswitch the chiller supply water temperature to providean even greater amount of heat adjustment. Aswith the C4nc version there is no option for remotecommunication although local monitoring is possible.C. CL20 C4scThe C4sc version comes with the full ColdLogik Management Systemcontrol. Please see page 16 for full explanation.NB: One or more fans can be factory fitted to each of the above RearCoolers at point of order.6

The complete solutionto all your cooling needsCL20 Rear CoolerCL20 Rear Cooler RangeProduct DefinitionsCL20 C8sc CoolerThe CL20 C8sc is capable of a maximum 35kWof ‘sensible’ cooling and comes complete with theColdLogik Management System ‘CMS’.The C8sc is designed to run at the optimumperformance at all times, ensuring maximum energysavings. The CMS tracks the air off and watertemperatures, by doing so it is able make minoradjustments thereby ensuring the room ambienttemperature is maintained at all times.CL20 C12sc CoolerThe CL20 C12sc is capable of a maximum 45kWof ‘sensible’ cooling and comes complete with theColdLogik Management System ‘CMS’.As with the C8sc the C12sc is designed to run at theoptimum performance; even when not requiring a highdensity cooling this CL20 Cooler is the most energyefficient.ColdLogik ManagementSystem ‘CMS’The CMS lies at the heart of the ColdLogik solution. The room ambient temperature is controlled locallyby the ColdLogik Management System – it achievesthis by automatically adjusting the fan speed, waterflow rate, and, where necessary, alters the outputwater temperature from the chiller, resulting in aconsistent delivery of cooled air into the data centre, with no operator intervention. The whole process canalso be overseen and controlled at individual cabinetlevel, room level and remotely via any of the industrystandard communication protocols, allowing remoteadministration. The ColdLogik Management Systemis 2U high and can be fitted either rack mounted or ontop of the cabinet.‘CMS’ ensures that all variants of the ColdLogiksystem operates on a ‘Sensible Cooling’ principle, thatis to say ‘water above dew point’, ensuring that thesystem remains a condensate free operation.7

CL20 Rear Cooler RangeProduct DefinitionsCL20 Interface FrameOne of the biggest advantages of the CL20 Cooler isthe ability to be retrofitted onto an existing cabinet. The Interface Frame has been designed to be auniversal product, so all standard and some nonstandardenclosures can be accommodated. It shouldbe noted that the Interface Frame allows a securefixing of the rear cooler without transferring anyadditional weight to the existing cabinet. The Interface Frame brings many of the benefitsof the CL20 Cooler family but without the needto decommission old cabinets or even entire datacentres. By working in harmony with the incumbentair conditioning system many of the benefits of theColdLogik system can be realised, e.g. removal ofhot spot problems, if there is a need to increase thecabinet kW density, if the need is to reduce carbonfootprint, save HVAC energy and transfer the energyto housing more active equipment or simply tosave money.8

The complete solutionto all your cooling needsCL20 Rear CoolerZero Aisle CoolerThe CL20 Zero Aisle Cooler provides an alternativemethod to fitting a CL20 Rear cooler onto the USpace6210 Cabinet or retrofitting to OEM cabinets. Safety, convenience and space saving are the key elementsof this unique patent applied for design. Unlike ahinged door which typically takes up 600mm to800mm of aisle space the Zero Aisle cooler whichmoves from front to rear on overhead runnersand floor based wheels takes up no more than itsriginal footprint. When fully retracted the distance between the back ofthe cabinet and the rear of the cooler is an impressive900mm of clearance, allowing for near unrestrictedaccess and working space. One other impressivefeature with this system is the ability for the runnersto mount to the ceiling without fixing on top ofthe cabinet.9
