Materials and methods: This study used19983 various specimens collected from health care workers,employees who are subject of sanitary inspection and outpatients.In this research 1129 Staphylococcus aureus strains wasisolated. Study was performed at Department of Microbiologyof Institute for Public Heath of Canton Sarajevo during 3months period, September-November 2010. The strains wereidentified by conventional microbiological tests. Sensitivitytesting to 8 antimicrobial drugs was performed according toCLSI guidelines, while MRSA strains were confirmed by E testreference. Results: Out of 1129 Staphylococcus aureus isolates,83 (7.3%) were penicillin sensitive and therefore excluded fromfuture analysis of the frequency of MSSA (Methicillin SensitiveStaphylococcus Aureus) and MRSA isolates. Out of 1442 testedhealth care workers, 6 (0.4%) had nasal colonization and only 1health care worker had MRSA. Out of 4220 routinely screenedemployees, 74 (1.8%) had nasal Staphylococcus aureus colonizationand 2 employees had MRSA. Out of 14321 varioussamples from outpatients, 966 (6.75 %) persons had identifiedStaphylococcus aureus out of which 178 persons had MRSAisolates. The greatest proportion of MSSA isolates (82.7%) wasresistant to penicillin only. Remaining isolates (17.3%) exhibitedadditionally variable resistance to antibiotics, including gentamicin,chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin and erythromycin.MRSA isolates were tested to 8 antibiotics with 7.4% resistantto penicillin, cefoxitin and erythromycin and 5.9% resistant topenicillin and cefoxitin. Conclusion: MRSA in general populationof Canton Sarajevo has non-multidrug resistance profile,providing increased options for empirical and directed therapyof infections caused by these strains.
