This isan outst<strong>and</strong>ing achievement for a most deserving Mathematician <strong>and</strong> we are all very proud of him.Our school achieved the following results:- 1 Prudence Award, 8 Distinctions <strong>and</strong> 45 Credits. From the cluster final, Min-Jae Choi of 7F has been selected to represent the school at the gr<strong>and</strong>final which will be held at the Power House Museum some time in <strong>Term</strong> 4. Well done Min-Jae.Tournament of MindsThe <strong>Rose</strong> <strong>Bay</strong> Tensai team competed in the regional Tournament of Minds competition at the sunny time of8.40am on Sunday 26th August. They were the first team to present on the day <strong>and</strong> performed admirably.They were particularly commended on their creativity. All students worked hard <strong>and</strong> have developed strongskills in team work, problem solving, creativity <strong>and</strong> presentation over the past two terms. Congratulationsshould go to Josh Kurucz-Hart, Lizzie Butterworth, Millianna Uchitel, Eugene Walsh, Libby Taylor, SusannaLehman <strong>and</strong> Bill Robinson for their effort <strong>and</strong> continued enthusiasm. The Maths Preliminary courses have concluded last week <strong>and</strong> the Maths Yearly Exams are timetabled at thelast Thursday <strong>and</strong> Friday of the term. Overthe final weeks they will be looking at the role Cortes <strong>and</strong> the Conquistadors played in the demise of theAztecs <strong>and</strong> their legacy today. Students in 8D, 8F <strong>and</strong> 8G have their assessment tasks (source analyses) dueon Tuesday 18 th September; students in 8B have theirs due on Monday 17th September. Next term studentswe will be looking at Australian Aborigines.Year 9


Year 9 are continuing their work on World War One, looking at issues on the home front, the results of theconscription debate, <strong>and</strong> commemoration of the War today. 9G have their assessment tasks due in Week 9.The next unit of study will be on Australia between the Wars.Year 9 ElectiveHave just begun the new topic of Greek Myths: starting with the Trojan Wars <strong>and</strong> the story of the horse <strong>and</strong>the focus will be on archaeological evidence regarding to the myths studied.Year 10The focus for this term is Australia <strong>and</strong> the Vietnam War Era. Throughout this topic we will look at Australia’sresponse to the threat of communism, reasons for Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War, the responseof various groups to Australia’s involvement <strong>and</strong> the impact of the war.Year 11–Modern History –Year 11 Modern History will sit a 2 hour examination on Thursday, September 13th that willinclude 3 sections. Section 1 will be sourced based on the Causes of WWI. Sections 2 <strong>and</strong> 3 will be essaybased with a choice of 2 in each section on Russia 1905-1945.Ancient History–.Society <strong>and</strong> Culture- Students are to be revising all 3 depth studies for this year, they are the Social <strong>and</strong>Cultural World, Personal <strong>and</strong> Social Identity (Adolescence) <strong>and</strong> Intercultural Communication. The exam willconsist of multiple choice, short answer questions, a scaffolded essay <strong>and</strong> an extended response.Studies of Religion–Year 11 have concluded their Preliminary studies <strong>and</strong> we wish them well in theirupcoming exams. Students are required to study material covered in the topics of Religion in Australia pre-1945 <strong>and</strong> Religious Tradition: Islam. The exam will contain a variety of multiple choice, terminology, shortanswer, medium answer <strong>and</strong> one essay-length question. Next term we will start our course by looking atReligion in Australia post-1945.Year 12Ancient History - Year 12 are concluding their topic on Pompeii <strong>and</strong> Herculaneum over the next two weeks.Students are reminded that they are expected to attend class until the last day. Over this time we will look atprivate buildings, <strong>and</strong> heritage <strong>and</strong> conservation within the cities. Students are strongly encouraged to startstudying for the exam, to access practice papers from the Board of Studies website or their teacher, <strong>and</strong> topractice their terminology <strong>and</strong> source analysis. Ms Pollock will be running revision sessions during theholidays for both classes should they wish to attend. We wish them well in their upcoming exams.Modern - Students will be continuing with their study of Conflict in Europe the focus is on the British <strong>and</strong>German home fronts during WWII. Over the next fortnight students will be revising the topics studied thisyear <strong>and</strong> working on exam preparation.Society <strong>and</strong> Culture–Over the next fortnight the focus will be on continuity <strong>and</strong> change within Buddhism <strong>and</strong>other Belief Systems <strong>and</strong> also students will be making future predictions about Belief Systems. We will also berevising the depth studies we have studied this year <strong>and</strong> working on exam technique.Extension - Year 12 History Extension will have revision for the core study Historiography <strong>and</strong> the case studyWinston Churchill for the remaining 2 lessons.LanguagesYear 7ItalianStudents will continue Unit 2 "Do you like?". During weeks 7 they will be revising all grammatical structures<strong>and</strong> practising spelling of the new words. Students will be sitting for their practice exams in week 7 in orderto achieve high academic results in their assessment in Italian. All students were issued with the AssessmentNotification slips two weeks prior the assessment. The exams will start in week 8. Homework is due Fridayweek 8.JapaneseYear 7 Japanese are learning about household items, after Yoshi <strong>and</strong> Mark arrive in the ancient capital,Kyoto.Year 8ItalianStudents are currently completing a topic relating to family <strong>and</strong> pets. A class examination based on listening<strong>and</strong> reading skills, is scheduled for week 9 <strong>and</strong> in class revision will take place prior to the examination date.Students were issued with an assessment task notification detailing content to study <strong>and</strong> layout of thisexamination paper. The presentation of individual photo albums has now been rescheduled for week 10.Students have been working on their albums in the computer room <strong>and</strong> it is wonderful to see the extensivecreativity of our students. All students have been informed about the need to submit work on the specified duedate <strong>and</strong> to save the final product on a USB to bring to class. Students are again reminded to read the task


description <strong>and</strong> marking criteria carefully for this assessment task. At the start of next term, students will begiven the opportunity to also present their work to a partner class.JapaneseYear 8 Japanese are doing presentations about Japan's flag, history, martial arts, samurai, shoguns.RussianIn week 7 students will be practising their writing <strong>and</strong> reading skills as well as their spelling. They will reviseall grammatical structures <strong>and</strong> new vocabulary in order to achieve high academic results. Students will sit fortheir exams in week 8. All the students were issued with Exam Notification slips two weeks prior their exams.Year 9ItalianYear 9 Italian have finished watching a film about a volatile family in Lampedusa, Sicily. They are about tostart a new unit of work based on the importance of "la bellafigura" to Italian life.JapaneseYear 9 Japanese are writing <strong>and</strong> reading in hiragana, katakana about school subjects, teachers <strong>and</strong> fooditems.Year 9 PhilosophyDuring weeks 9 <strong>and</strong> 10 students will continue learning about the Consequential theory of Utilitarianism.Students will look at the arguments “For <strong>and</strong> Against Utilitarianism” <strong>and</strong> will be able to decide if this theorytruly reflects the Rightness of the action. Are consequences really important for the morality of the action?Will the students change their mind? I love when they do! The problem is that they do it very often in aphilosophy class. But isn't it the main purpose of philosophy to question your basic assumptions <strong>and</strong> beliefs?So we are on the right track! But again, what would I know? I know nothing!Technology <strong>and</strong> Applied StudiesYear 9 roboticsThe robotics class has been getting into constructing <strong>and</strong> programming their robots as there is no tomorrow.There are students in this class who would make any parent or teacher proud. The class is looking at movinginto the Rescue <strong>and</strong> Robo cup activity stage. The class has been invited to spend a day at UNSW as apreliminary introduction to Robocup activities. This would also allow us to determine what additionalresources (sensors) <strong>and</strong> programming skills we may require.Creative <strong>and</strong> Performing Arts (CAPA)MUSIC CLASSESYear 12: Music 1 <strong>and</strong> Music 2 will be continuing to study for the written HSC paper for the remainder of thistermYear 11: Music 1 <strong>and</strong> 2 HSC Written Exams are scheduled for Monday, Sept 10 from 12.30pm.Music 2 Performance Exam will be scheduled on Tuesday, Sept 18 between 12am <strong>and</strong> 2.00pm.Year 10: Mrs Masterson’s music class will be performing an own choice assessment on Monday Sept 10during class timeVISUAL ARTS CLASSES12 Photography All Students should be working on their Portfolios <strong>and</strong> Personal Logos which can be usedfor potential interviews for courses <strong>and</strong> jobs after High School11 Visual Arts All Mini Body of Works should be submitted by now. Final packaging due in week 10.9 Photography Students are learning basics of Photoshop <strong>and</strong> will be required to look on edmodo tocomplete Mini Photoshop Tasks. There are NO tickets, just first in … Gold coin admission.<strong>PDHPE</strong>All students from years 7 – 10 have been issued with a detailed scope <strong>and</strong> sequence that explains atlength what students are doing each term in the theoretical <strong>and</strong> practical components of this course.Students have also been issued with a “<strong>PDHPE</strong> GENERAL INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS AT RBSC”sheet. This details the requirements in <strong>PDHPE</strong> in relation to uniform, theory lessons, homework,assignments <strong>and</strong> student conduct.Year 7Year 7 are completing a unit entitled “Am I Normal?” in the theoretical component of this course. In this unitstudents will look at factors that affect health such as adolescence <strong>and</strong> change, body image, eating disorders,the nature of mental health problems <strong>and</strong> seeking help/protective strategies. The assessment task for this unitis a speech/power point presentation for the selective class <strong>and</strong> creating a poster in Glogster for thecomprehensive classes. This will be issued in week three for the selective cohort <strong>and</strong> week 6 for thecomprehensive cohort. In the practical component of this course the students will enjoy participating in avariety of stick games such as softball/T-ball, cricket, hockey <strong>and</strong> Lacrosse.Year 8Year 8 are completing a unit entitled “Life Long Habits” in the theoretical component of this course. In this unitstudents will explore risk taking behaviours, sexual health <strong>and</strong> strategies to minimise harm to lifestylediseases. The assessment task for this unit is creating a pamphlet/newsletter or website. This will be issued inweek seven of this term. In the practical component of this course the students are utilising the colleges fit lab<strong>and</strong> learning a range of age appropriate strength exercises.Year 9Year 9 are completing a unit entitled “Looking After Myself <strong>and</strong> Others” in the theoretical component of thiscourse. In this unit students will look at supporting themselves <strong>and</strong> others, strengthening resiliency <strong>and</strong>developing equal <strong>and</strong> respectful relationships. The assessment task for this unit is creating a story book forthe selective cohort <strong>and</strong> designing a pamphlet/newsletter for the comprehensive cohort. This will be issued inweek seven of this term. Please note that Year 9 are working with edmodo on their laptops <strong>and</strong> should bechecking this daily. In the practical component of this course the students are in the process of creating theirown game. This will be due in week six or seven <strong>and</strong> will be taught to the whole class, who will then play thatgame.Year 10Year 10 are completing a unit entitled “Composition <strong>and</strong> Performance” in the theoretical component of thiscourse. In this unit students will explore influences on skill development <strong>and</strong> performance <strong>and</strong> applyingmechanical principles to enhance performance. The assessment task for this unit is an end of yearexamination. Please note that Year 10 are working with edmodo on their laptops <strong>and</strong> should be checking thisdaily. In the practical component of this course the students are utilising the colleges fit lab <strong>and</strong> learning arange of age appropriate strength exercises.Year 9 PASSThese students are starting a new unit entitled – “May the Force be with you!” Students examine how the lawsof physics <strong>and</strong> technology affect performance. This will involve look at both the theoretical <strong>and</strong> practicalapplication of biomechanics <strong>and</strong> technology in modern sport. Students participate in a range of ball sports toexamine how biomechanics impacts on a variety of ball sports.Year 10 PASS –These students are starting a new unit entitled – “Sporting Champions – Born or Made?” They will be giventhe opportunity to discuss <strong>and</strong> critically think about what makes a successful athlete <strong>and</strong> they will bequestioned about the degree to which these areas are essential for the athlete. In the practical component thestudents will be learning <strong>and</strong> participating in a range of new <strong>and</strong> non-traditional team sports. They arecurrently enjoying playing a new sport called “Speedminton”.Year 11<strong>PDHPE</strong>Year 11 are studying diligently for their yearly exam. These students should be completing past papers <strong>and</strong>submitting them to Mr Papadakis for marking.


Year 12<strong>PDHPE</strong>Year 12 have now completed the <strong>PDHPE</strong> course. The next two weeks students will be completing revisionwith some students presenting seminars on selected topics to the class. The class is also completing a TrialHSC paper on Monday 17 th September starting at 8 am in C204. A reminder that each student should beaiming to spend at least three hours a week studying just for this subject.Year 12 SLRThese students have enjoyed playing a variety of new <strong>and</strong> old games this term. They have been playing thenew game of “speedminton” <strong>and</strong> their skill level has improved with each game they play. The other twogames that they enjoyed playing are the not so new game of Boules <strong>and</strong> the relatively new game of “Klops”.They have enjoyed playing both games but particularly “Klops”.
