costs. The increase of foundations’ investments has significantlymade Lydia’s outreach possible for women and their caregivers.Dr. Bipin Chudgar is a caregiver who remembers firsthearing about Lydia. “A volunteer delivered a bag and visitedwith Daksha the first time she was diagnosed with cancer. It wasvery nice. We began making annual contributions.” When hisbeloved Daksha passed after her second diagnosis of cancer, herwishes were honored that any memorials be made to Lydia.Dr. Chudgar, now a Lydia Board member, believesstrongly in Lydia’s purpose. “I want to take Lydia farther. I want togo one step further to complete the vision of my wife. As Lydiagrows we would like to take better care of cancer patients by givingthem a place to stay a few days to weeks when needed. I hopeothers will made donations to this needed respite service.”Dr. Alice David is equally passionate about Lydia’s mission:“Lydia’s support to women coping with cancer complementsthe services of healthcare providers.” A Medical Oncologist& Hematologist and also a Lydia Board member, Dr. Davidbelieves “with more medical professionals’ recognition of Lydia’smission and vision, our community will be richly impacted.”It is normal and common to feel overwhelmed by a cancerdiagnosis. Individuals may need access to emotional, spiritual, and sometimes financial help, but do not have a support network. It doesn’t have to be so with Lydia. Dr. Chudgar reflects:“I love Lydia is not just a bag; it is a person coming to your homeand talking to you. It is the ability to call Lydia anytime and gethelp.” At The Lydia Project, women coping with cancer are notalone. How You Can Get Involved• Organize a collection drive of agency needed itemsat your practice. When HelpCan’t WaitBy Helen McVickerWhen HELP Can’t Wait (WHCW) is proud to announce ourlatest Program to help the Nursing Home residents we serve. WHCW’smission is to improve the quality of life for residents of long-term carefacilities (primarily nursing homes) and this newest program will helpfurther our service to them.We have partnered with The Institute of Religion and Healthof Augusta and the Grace Corps to furnish ‘chaplains’ or pastoral carevolunteers who can be called upon when needed. We have WHCWvolunteers who have completed the extensive Grace Corps training andthey are well equipped to serve in this capacity as ‘pastoral care volunteers’.The Grace Corps is currently serving, among others; localhospital patients, Disaster Victims at the Joseph L. Still burn center, RedCross disaster victims, the Wounded Warrior project, and Lydia Projectrecipients. Now they will add nursing home residents to their list ofpersons in need of prayer and counseling. While WHCW serves the material needs of nursing home residentsby donating much needed health and comfort items and coordinatingwith the community to arrange for entertainment and diversionsfor these shut-ins, we are hoping to now be able to serve some of theiremotional and spiritual needs as well. The training our volunteers have completed or will completeincludes 20 hours of hands-on, supervised clinical ministry in local hospitals. Some topics include: The Healer’s Calling, Pastoral Care in theHospital, Religious Rituals, Multiculturalism, Medical Ethics, The Patient’sRights, Death and Dying, Spirituality and Medicine, Grace with aFace and many others. While hospitals and hospice groups have typically had Chaplainsto call upon in times of need, nursing home residents have not. This new program will fill a void where there is no ‘home church’ or caringfamily member to summon someone when a resident is in need. Byoffering a ‘pool’ of volunteers through our Chaplain program, we hopethat no resident will go without counseling and comforting when theyare in most need.We at WHCW have enjoyed the support of our communitythrough help from churches of all faiths. Their help has meant a lot andwe hope that support will continue and that everyone will embrace thisexciting new effort as we seek to serve our seniors in more and betterways.Helen McVickerPresident, CFOWhen HELP Can’t Wait (WHCW) was founded by Helen McVicker, Presidentand CFO.
