We had great fun learning to play water polo ... - St Peter's School

Half term is already here! It doesn‘t seem 5 minutes since that first day in September. It has been another busy week at CPS! On Monday Mrs Hicks
organised a great day of street dance courtesy of Sainsbury‘s vouchers. The workshops were thoroughly enjoyable and I know the children had a
super time - my thanks to Mrs Hicks for coordinating a good day. On Tuesday the Reception children went on their first educational visit to ‗The
Deep‘. They had a wonderful experience and my thanks again to the staff and all the parent volunteers whose help was invaluable. At my assembly
this week we talked about friendship and what makes a good friend? We all watched the last scene from Toy Story 3 where Andy is saying goodbye
to his toys as he leaves for university. He describes Woody as, ―Woody‘s been my pal forever – he‘s brave and true and loyal. He‘ll always there for
you and will never let you down!‖ We also discussed what we should do if friendships go wrong? We concluded that we should attempt to sort our
differences using our words first but then to seek help from the duty member of staff or class teacher to assist in a disagreement. 2H presented a
fabulous assembly on Wednesday about the ‗Great Fire of London‘ - the acting was superb providing the audience with gruesome historical facts! My
thanks to 2H and Mrs Hall for preparing the assembly - it was lovely to see so many parents and grandparents watching, we all appreciate your
support. The ‗Design-a-Meal‘ competition generated over 130 entries and was won by Tilly Nichols. Her menu was Chicken, Chorizo, Tomato and
Sweetcorn Pasta Bake followed by Banana and Chocolate Bread and Butter Pudding. Many thanks to the catering staff at St Peters School for
judging the competition. The runners up were Dylan Goodwin, Jemima Uren and Isaac Harris who all will receive a prize when we return after Half
Term. We are all looking forward to Tilly making us her creation on the first day back! The dining hall was a scary place today, causing much
excitement. It was decorated in a Halloween theme and the menu was changed to Ghostly Battered Fish, Hubble Bubble Sweetcorn and Freaky
Friday Fries followed by Spider Cakes. Thanks to Shane and the girls for their work to make this lovely event happen. I have organised a ‗Meet the
Head—Parents‘ Forum‘ on Thursday, 10th November. It would be lovely to see all parents there, please see attached letter for further details.
It has been a pleasure leading CPS through this first half term and I look forward to the next half of term with huge excitement. I hope you have a
restful break!

Dear Parents
As you may already be aware our school is part of the ‘Eco-Schools’ project and we have
already achieved our Silver Award. This year we are working hard to obtain our Green Flag
award, which will be a great achievement for us and recognise our work with regards to
environmental issues.
In connection with this we would like to suggest that this year your children do not send
Christmas cards to each other. We will talk to the children about our reasoning behind this
and about other (paperless) ways in which they can pass on their seasonal greetings. Of
course, if you or your child would still like to continue the Christmas card tradition then we
will not stop it and are happy for them to give out cards at school. However, we will not
actively promote it or have a school ‘post box’. All the children in the
school have, however, designed a Christmas Card which you will be able
to purchase to send out to family and friends and raise money for FOCPS.

This
week we
have
been
asking
questions
in order
to find out more information
about Guy Fawkes. We have been using question words
and question marks in ALL of our questions. Then the
children discussed where to find out the answer; looking
in information books, on the internet and by asking
people or visiting a museum. Unfortunately we were not
able to ask Guy Fawkes in person so some of us had a
chance to dress up as Guy and were put in the hot
seat. Our volunteers answered the questions in character
and came up with some brilliant ideas. Well done 1GN!
Plea from Mrs Hicks — please note that all children
should have the school tracksuit (especially the track
suit bottoms) for wearing outside in PE and
Games during the winter months. Thank you.

made a very exciting trip to
‘The Deep’ on Tuesday. Everyone had the chance to
watch a 3D video about sharks, enjoy watching a tank of
jelly fish, and learn about sting rays and even about the
Spotted Rat fish. There was a wonderful lift that
brought us from the bottom of the tank straight
to the top, where we got an even closer look at
life
under
water.
In time for Bonfire Night,
1B have started learning all
about Guy Fawkes and the
Gunpowder Plot! On
Tuesday we asked questions
about him, focusing on
question words at the
beginning of our sentences
and question marks at the end. We have enjoyed researching
all about him in order for us to write our own reports!

Many thanks to Ruth Holden-Harris for
organising a fantastic Mum’s Night Out at
the Kuja Louge on Wednesday. Everyone
who went really enjoyed it.

Double doctors!
Continuing our caring theme, the
children were very
excited to have a visit
from two
doctors.
The
children
showed
great
interest in what the doctors told
them and then listened to their
own heartbeats through a
stethoscope and also a Doppler machine. They looked into
each other’s mouths (to see if they could see all the way
down to their tummies!) and saw how a plaster cast is put on
a broken arm- fascinated by how it went from soft to a really
hard. The children had great fun practicing their bandaging
skills on each other too.

Year 2 and 3 children had an
energetic Monday learning some
tricky dance steps for their “Street

Melissa played the violin beautifully for us
today in assembly—thank you Melissa.

In our Literacy time with Mrs
Spaven, 3S/T have been performing
poetry. We have practised saying
poems out loud with lots of expression. We
performed a poem called Words to Whisper
by Michaela Morgan using different voices to
suit the lines. Molly was away on Monday and Tuesday so we
performed it for her. We then looked at a poem about a bonfire
before starting to write our own poems ready for Bonfire
Night. Here is a verse by William Contreras:
2H Assembly The
class assembly this week was
provided by 2H and they did SO
well! The story of the Great
Fire of London is one that has
really caught the children’s
imagination and they all
enjoyed telling our visitors
about what they had learnt.
Elias made a splendid Samuel
Pepys and everyone
remembered their words and
spoke beautifully. Well done!
2S have been busy making pizzas in the dining room
as part of their food topic in science. They had
planned their masterpieces beforehand and had
great fun trying to make the real thing.
PE/Games
We have now completed our apparatus work, here

GREAT NORTH SWIM! LAKE WINDERMERE
SUNDAY, 24TH JUNE 2012
Alan & Judy Sunderland (plus other members of staff and
pupils from St Olave’s and St Peter’s) are participating in the
Great North Swim next June. If you would like to join us you
need to enter as soon as possible. Visit: greatswim.org -
select Windermere and the relevant distance, 800 metres or
1 mile. Register and enter, selecting Sunday, 2.35 p.m. as
your start time. We should then be able to swim together.
The school will hopefully run a coach to Lake Windermere
but please let Judy know, by email, if you are participating!
Christingle Information
We will be having a Christingle
Service on Thursday, 15th
December. All children should
be collected from school at 3.20pm and
walked to Chapel for the service to start at
3.45pm. The service will end at 4.15pm and
then there will be coffee and mince pies
served in the Memorial Hall at St Peter’s
School. Further details will be issued
closer to the time.
