NicollThe <strong>NMAA</strong>/John W. Nicoll Scholarship for Future Teachers wasestablished in Dr. Nicoll’s name when he retired from the<strong>Newport</strong>-<strong>Mesa</strong> <strong>Unified</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong> after serving as Superintendentfor 26 years. Dr. Nicoll was a professor at National University in theEducational Leadership program training school administrators. Hetook great pride in meeting every student who was selected to receivethis award. <strong>NMAA</strong>/Dr. John W. NicollScholarship for Future TeachersPURPOSEThe <strong>NMAA</strong>/Dr. John W. Nicoll Scholarship for Future Teachersprovides assistance to <strong>Newport</strong>-<strong>Mesa</strong> <strong>Unified</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong>high school seniors who intend to become teachers. It isawarded to a student who is highly motivated to become ateacher, has demonstrated the temperament and ability necessaryto succeed, and is determined to be in need of financialassistance by the <strong>NMAA</strong> Scholarship Committee.SCHOLARSHIP AWARDThe $2500 award is disbursed in five annual allotments of fivehundred dollars. The initial payment is granted upon proof ofregistration as a freshman for the Fall term following highschool graduation. The second, third and fourth payments aredisbursed upon receipt of transcripts that reflect completion ofsufficient units to advance the recipient to the status ofsophomore, junior and senior.
