Technical Data SheetPlastisealRubberised bitumen, mastic joint sealant compatible with bitumen basedmembranesUSESFor sealing joints in retaining walls, roofing (sealinghorizontal chases, flashings, gutterings and sheet laps),sealing terminations of bitumen based waterproofingmembranesADVANTAGES• Firm, flexible weather resistant seal• Excellent slump resistance• Suitable for permanent immersion in water• Compatible with asphalt or bituminous surfaces• Resistant to alkalis and sulphates• Easy to applyDESCRIPTIONA flexible, gun applied sealant based on a combination ofbitumen and synthetic rubber. Dries to form a rubbery sealwith excellent slump resistance. Plastiseal has goodresistance to biodegradation, and is suitable for sealinglap joints in gutters and drainage channels where pondedwater may reside. Also suitable for general sealing orpointing work in roofing and flashing applications.DESIGN CRITERIAJOINT CONFIGURATIONJoints should be of a size to permit adequate applicationof Plastiseal. Very narrow joints are difficult to sealeffectively and for most applications 5 mm should beconsidered as minimum width. Maximum joint widthshould not exceed 40 mm.MOVEMENT ACCOMMODATION FACTORJoints should be designed so that total cyclic movement intension or compression does not exceed 10% of the jointwidth at time of sealing. Total movement in shear shouldnot exceed 20% of joint width at time of sealing.PROPERTIESData quoted is typical for this product but does notconstitute a specification.Form:Specific gravity: 1.4Colour:Physical/chemicalchange:Drying time(solvent release):Low slump mastic compoundBlackDries by solvent releaseApplicationtemperature: Minimum 5°CMin 1 week at 20°C, longer if lowertemperature or sealant depthgreater than 20 mmTemperaturerange in service: Minus 20°C - 80°CChemical resistance Dilute acids resistantto occasional spillage: Dilute alkalis resistantSolvents not resistantPetrol/fuels not resistantLubricants not resistantWater immersion:Movementaccommodationfactor (MAF):APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONSJOINT PREPARATIONBefore permanent immersion inwater, Plastiseal must be left for amin period of 7 days to permit fullevaporation of its solvent content, dependent upon ambientconditions and depth of Plastiseal+/- 5% for butt joints, 10% total+/-10% for lap joints, 20% totalEnsure joint surfaces are completely dry, clean and frostfree. Joint backing must also be dry. Remove all dirt, dust, laitance and loose material by vigorous wire brushing.Remove all rust, scale and loose surface coatings frommetal surfaces. PlastisealWhere a neat joint finish is required, cover the joint faceedges with masking tape before Plastiseal application andremove the masking tape immediately after the sealingwork has been completed.PRIMING POROUS SURFACESNon-moving joints normally do not require use of primer, however excessively porous surfaces or friable surfacesmay need priming. Consult Parchem for advice.PRIMING NON-POROUS SURFACESNot normally required. Where necessary, metal surfacesshould be cleaned using Solvent 10. Ferrous metals shouldbe treated with an anti-corrosion primer.APPLICATIONPlastiseal may be applied by gun direct from the cartridgeor by trowel. When loading cartridges into gun ensurenozzle is cut to the required length and angle, and that thecartridge membrane has been punctured.Hold gun firmly against joint at a constant angle of about45°. Guide nozzle along the joint gradually, ensuring goodcontact with joint surface. Never pump the trigger hard.Wipe the nozzle occasionally to ensure a clean extrusion. After sealant has been applied, it should be tooled to aslightly concave surface with a wooden spatula, which maybe moistened with White Spirits or similar solvent.CLEAN UPTo be removed from equipment immediately after use witha solvent such as Solvent 10 or White Spirits. Do not usesolvents on hands, use suitable proprietary skin cleaner.WATER IMMERSIONPlastiseal is suitable for permanent immersion in water, however, it is essential to allow full solvent evaporationfrom sealant prior to water immersion. This will take about 7- 10 days at 15°C, longer if temperatures are lower or thePlastiseal is deeper than 20 mm.MAINTENANCEMechanical damage may be repaired at any time - ensurethat surface is clean, dry and free of foreign matter to allowgood adhesion of new to old Plastiseal.Plastiseal:Solvent 10:600 ml cartridgeGUIDE TO PLASTISEAL QUANTITIESJoint sizewidth x depth(millimetres)10 x 20 3.015 x 15 2.615 x 20 2.020 x 20 1.520 x 25 1.220 x 30 1.025 x 25 1.0STORAGE4 and 20 litre drumsLength of joint sealedper 600 ml cartridge(metres)12 months, stored in cool dry conditions in original, unopened containers.IMPORTANT NOTICEA Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and Technical Data Sheet (TDS)are available from the Parchem website or upon request from thenearest Parchem sales office.
