Modified for the WebAdvanced Liner Technology Using VNIIEF DiskExplosive Magnetic Generators (DEMG)Principal Investigators: Robert E. Reinovsky (LANL), V.N. Mokhov, and Andre V. Ivanovsky(VNIIEF)Project DescriptionThe objective of this project is to make Russian Disk Explosive Magnetic Generator (DEMG)technology available for use in pulsed power hydrodynamics experiments conducted inthe US. VNIIEF has made substantial investments in the intellectual property identified asDEMG technology, and DEMGs have been used in several joint LANL/VNIIEF experiments. The DEMG represents the highest current, most energetic high-performance pulsedpower system available today. As the owner of the technology VNIIEF can either licensethe technology (at a substantial price) or enter into collaborative development efforts toapply their experience by designing a new DEMG system to meet specific technical needs.LANL and VNIIEF have adopted the latter approach, which has the additional advantage ofadvancing the concept of collaboration as VNIIEF brings technology worth far more thanthe token cost of the subtask, and LANL bringsapplication experiments, diagnostics, and someadvanced simulation techniques. Ultimately, theUS can purchase DEMG hardware from VNIIEF asneeded, probably at a cost that is significantlybelow that of comparable fabrication in the USand certainly far below the cost of independentlydeveloping the technology in the US.DEMG system for ALT-1 Experiment.A development contract, with incrementalauthorizations, was awarded in FY03 as aB-dot (7 probes* 60º)DEMG-1...DEMG-7B-dot (6 probes* 60º)HEMG-1...HEMG-6Explosivedisconnection unitB-dot (3 probes* 60º)TL#1-1...TL#1-6FOSB-dot (6 probes* 60º)TL#2-1...TL#2-6B-dot (6 probes* 60º)TL#3-1...TL#3-6HEMGDetonatorsDEMGCMUPULinerSchematic of VNIIEF DEMG system for conducting imploding liner experiments.
