MANAGER’S KORNERTony ToscanoSummertime in Florida. We all know whatthat means. Heat, Rain, Humidity, throwin a little drought and add a few projectsaround the park.I did take time over the weekend to gofishing at Sunset Beach with an oldfishing buddy. Sometimes when you getcomplacent thinking that you will alwayshave the chance and the time to go anddo what you love to do whenever youwant, you actually never go.We all know it’s going to be hot here, orfor that matter wherever you are, whichnever seemed to stop anyone in the past,so I suggest you make plans and do whatyou love to do.Now that we have had some downpoursof rain and Shannon has visited about100 homes to check on sprinkler andlawn issues which have been reported toABC pest control for confirmation andsome treatment, we can get back to theprojects at hand.The men's bathroom project is movingalong nicely. Sheetrock is up, finalplumbing and electrical inspections arescheduled for week of 7/24. Next is theprime and painting (Shannon will do this),then the ceiling grid, tile, then all thefixtures will be placed and the dividerwalls installed. We are still about 3weeks from completion, but moving alongnicely.Outside projects including the well valves,painting of the front island block borders,sidewalk cracks will be scheduled afterthe bathroom project.The Road resurface project has beentabled until the Board returns. Afterscoping out the drain lines, we havediscovered that they need furtherinspection and possible repairs done priorto the resurfacing of the roads. Due to thepossible cost of these repairs we all wantto make sure we have as many eyes onthe explanations and solutions of ouroptions.I thank all those who have taken the timeduring these rainy and heated days toclean up around your homes. Simplepressure washing or weed pulling goes along way when it comes to theappearance of each home. Remember toclean out your gutters, which tend to getbacked up with leaves during our stormyseason. This backup may cause the rainwater to overflow the gutters into theeaves of the home and cause damage if itgets under the siding.Sales have slowed down to a halt. Wehave sold 16 homes since Jan 1 2013.Currently we have a limited amount ofhomes on the market, yet still a goodselection. Those of uswho are here year round say thanks forthe swimming pool.These recipes are different, but maybewe should do that more often.“VEAL SCALLOPINI”1 Pound Thin Veal Cutlets (about 8)¼ Cup Vegetable Oil¾ Cup Chopped Onion¼ Pound Sliced Fresh Mushrooms1 Clove Garlic (minced)2 Tbsp Flour¾ tsp Salt¼ tsp Pepper1 Cup Dry White Wine½ Cup WaterCook cutlets in hot oil for 4 minutes oruntil browned. Drain on paper towels,reserve drippings in pan. Saute onion,mushrooms, garlic in drippings, add flourto vegetables, salt and pepper, stirringwell. Cook 1 minute stirring constantly,gradually add wine and water. Continueto cook and stir until mixture thickens.Add cutlets, cover and simmer 15minutes. Spoon sauce over top of platedcutlets to serve. 4 servings.“ORANGE-GINGER BEETS”1 Pound Beets½ tsp Grated Orange Rind¾ Cup Orange Juice2 tsp Cornstarch2 tsp Ground Ginger1/3 tsp Salt1 Tbsp Butter or MargarineLeave root, 1 inch of stem on beets,scrub with a brush, place beets in saucepan, add water. Bring to a boil, cover,and simmer 40 minutes or more untiltender. Drain, pour cold water over beetsand drain. Trim off roots and stems, ruboff skin. Cut beets into cubes and setaside. Combine orange rind, orangejuice, cornstarch, sugar, ginger, and saltin a small bowl, stir well. Melt butter inmedium skillet, add beets and orangemixture, bring to boil. Cook 1 minutestirring constantly. Makes 4 to 6servings.

We’ve had some sporadicrain showers over the past 2 months butwhen we get those 2 weeks of completelydry conditions it wreaks havoc on ourlawns and shrubs.Without needing to get detailed I will giveyou a quick synopsis of what the on againoff again rain showers do to ourlandscapes.

The rain is wonderful for all our plantsand shrubs, but they get so used toconstantly getting the nutrients from thenatural rain, that when the dry conditionscome our plants and shrubs starve for thenatural nutrients the rain provides.Your sprinkler system and some handwatering will aid with this but once youget used to steak it may take a bit toadjust to hamburger. Plants are smartand they adapt well to these changes butyou may see some signs of stress beforeyou see improvement, this is where youcome in.These signs of stress may be nothing,just routine damage due to theadjustment period, but they may also besigns of major damage to come. Therains will activate fungus which staysdormant until we get those periods of wet,humidity and more wet conditions (sameconditions you get when you over waterwith your sprinkler system). Once it’sactivated and the conditions dry out theactivated fungus will destroy your gardenif you do not keep an eye on it and spraya fungicide to control it. Once controlledthe dead grass will have to be replaced ifthe damage is extensive. If caught in timethe surrounding healthy grass will fill inthe dead spots.You may also see some yellowing onsome shrubs, maybe even on your lawns.This is due to too much rain water (or anywater for that matter). This is not anissue, just hold off watering for a weekand the soil moisture should adjust in thisshort time.something that should be treated.Remember ants do not damage theshrubs but they are there looking forinsects that do damage them.The rains provide water and the leavesprovide food and shelter. These caneasily be controlled with any pesticidespray. Make sure when you spray youcover the entire plant, top and bottom ofthe leaves. You cannot damage the plantby over spraying for pests.You can also look on your shrubs for anyexposed roots, since the rains tend towash away any loose dirt and expose thetops of the root systems. If you see signsof this just cover them back up with loosesoil and replace any washed away mulch.Leaving the roots exposed is not good forthe plant. It will be open to pest invasionas well be exposed to heat which will drythem out and kill them. Not Good.Times in Florida can change quickly aswe all know. Make sure that your yardtimers and your watering habits areconsistent during the year (sprinklertimers set and batteries good). Nextmonth I may be speaking to you aboutthe 2-3 weeks of 95 degree, humidweather conditions we have during July-August. If you stay consistent with yourlawns and shrubs they will get used tothat and will adjust to the unstableconditions of the weather.
