CONTENTS 32 MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMANEDWIN MOSESFOREWORDCONTENTS19 PEACEPLAYERSINTERNATIONALAn Argentine training programme34 PROJECT VISIT TO BERLINLaureus Ambassador Axel Schulzvisits KICK im Boxring, BerlinThe year 2013 promises to be highly significantfor Laureus as we stage the Laureus WorldSports Awards in the Southern Hemispherefor the first time.Rio de Janeiro will be at the centre ofthe sporting world over the next fewyears as it builds up to the 2014 FIFAWorld Cup TM and the 2016 Olympicand Paralympic Games and it is fittingthat we are able to take the AwardsCeremony there for the next two years.Rio is an important development, butour plans for 2013 and beyond willtouch every continent as we also intendto accelerate the pace of growth ofthe Laureus Sport for Good Foundationworldwide. The number of sports-basedcommunity projects that Laureussupports passed 100 last year and weare not going to allow our expansion toslow down. One of the highlights of the year wasthe relaunch of the Laureus Foundationin the United States and its tie-up withthe Coach Across America programme, which aims to help 40,000 youngpeople over the next few years. In this edition of the Laureus Magazineyou can read about an emotional visitwe made to New Orleans, seven yearson from Hurricane Katrina, as part ofthis initiative. For me the Laureus Global Summit atFC Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium inNovember was also memorable. Stagedwith the help of the Laureus Foundationin Spain, project leaders from aroundthe world joined together with AcademyMembers to take part in workshops andshare their experiences and expertise.Yet another example of the Laureusnetwork flourishing. As you turn these pages, I hope, likeme, you will be amazed at the sheerbreadth of the work of Laureus, whichnow reaches 34 countries. These areimpressive numbers, but we never losesight of the fact that every child we helpis an individual.None of this would be possible withoutthe work of our project leaders andvolunteers around the world and withoutthe support of our Founding Patrons,Richemont and Daimler, and GlobalPartners, Mercedes-Benz and IWCSchaffhausen. GLOBAL SUMMIT 1110LAUREUS SPORT FORGOOD FOUNDATIONSUMMITBARcELONAOne of the real highlights of the Laureuscalendar in recent years has been the LaureusSport for Good Foundation Global Summit.FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: LAUREUSACADEMY MEMBERS MARVELOUSMARVIN HAGLER, MORNÉ DU PLESSIS,FC BARCELONA VICE-PRESIDENTCARLES VILARRUBÍ AND LAUREUSACADEMY MEMBER HUGO PORTA.Sneh: IMAGE brings able bodied kidsand partners them with kids withdisabilities allowing them to bondthrough sport,WHY SPORT? WHY YOURPARTIcULAR SPORT?Lewis: Our project is based on takingkids from the townships and integratingthem with kids from more affluentareas through cricket. They spend theweekends together, and play together. Not all of them are the best cricketers, but through cricket they learn to betterunderstand each other.Sneh: Through sport these disabledkids learn that they do have strengthsand capabilities within them, whichhelps make them confident andindependent. We had kids come in fortheir first time with no self-esteem, noconfidence, they were battered, brokenchildren, but very soon, before anythingelse, what moves them on is newconfidence, and that comes from sport.WHAT cHALLENGES DO YOU FAcE?Lewis: A main aim of ours is to helpsecure scholarships and bursaries forour participants from the townships. But people who had tried to do thisbefore us fell short. They gave the kidsscholarships to top schools but theseyoungsters from the townships wouldfind it difficult to integrate with the kidsthere and felt as though they stuck out. What we do is help them socialise withkids from more affluent backgroundsand so when our kids get into topschools, they already understand otherkids from different backgrounds. In 2012, following a very successfulevent in London the previous year, thesummit journeyed to Barcelona and thehome of one of the world’s top footballclubs: FC Barcelona. The Summit is a testament to theLaureus goal of strengthening thenetwork of supported projects andoffering more than financial help alone. And by bringing leaders from worldwideprojects together to learn about howthey can use sport for social change, this priceless opportunity to learn fromeach other is doing just that.At the event, Laureus took theopportunity to talk to leaders basedas far apart as Nairobi to Zurichto learn what their main challenges, hopes and goals are by using sportfor social change.Answering the questions were Lewisfrom the Johannesburg Cubs projectand Sneh from India’s IMAGE project,SO WHAT IS YOUR PROjEcTALL ABOUT?Lewis: Johannesburg Cubs is a cricketproject, working in the townships ofJo’burg. We work with a lot of orphans:Aids orphans, children of murderedparents, and we try to better their lives.LAUREUS ACADEMY MEMBERMARVELOUS MARVIN HAGLER ISINTRODUCED TO SITTING VOLLEYBALLPHOTO CAPTION NEEDEDMEMBERS OF THE LAUREUS FAMILY ARE WELCOMED BY FC BARCELONA PITCH-SIDE AT THE CAMP NOU. GLOBAL SUMMIT 13LAUREUS VICE CHAIR, SEAN FITZPATRICK AND ACADEMYMEMBER MARVELOUS MARVIN HAGLER AT THE SPORTFOR GOOD SUMMIT 2012 IN BARCELONABY SEAN FITZPATRICKvIcE-cHAIR LAUREUS SPORTFOR GOOD FOUNDATIONAnybody who wants to get a snapshot of Laureusin action should have been with me at the LaureusSport for Good Foundation Global Summit inBarcelona. I guess we overuse words like ‘global’ and‘great’ in our daily life, but that was what it was like atFC Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium in November.LAUREUS ACADEMY MEMBER MIGUEL INDURAIN TRIES HIS HAND AT SOME BASKETBALL EXERCISES AT THE LAUREUS SUMMITHOPES & GOALSSneh: The adult mindset [in India] isthat the disabled are just worthless andthese perceptions need to change ifwe want kids to take part we need thesupport of the community and parents. But in the past we have had a numberof schools pull out when parentsdiscover their kids are spending timewith disabled kids.HOW DOES BEING PART OFTHE LAUREUS FAmILY HELPYOUR PROjEcT?Lewis: I started Jo’burg Cubs by myselfand it just grew and grew and it becametoo big for me to support alone. With Laureus support, we have reallymanaged to grow further in terms oftrainers, coaches and the numbers wecan now help, not to mention feed andclothe. We can also provide transportfor the kids taking part in the project.Sneh: IMAGE wouldn’t exist if it weren’tfor Laureus support. When we initiallystarted, some donors were upset wewere running this kind of project [withkids with disabilities] and there waspressure to shut it down, so withoutLaureus, it wouldn’t have existed.AND HOW HAS THE SUmmIT HELPED?Lewis: I found it very interesting andI’ve been able to meet people withsimilar projects and find out we have alot in common to share. But what I’velearnt is that there are also differentways to do things, and hopefully I canshare this with people back home.Sneh: I think in particular theworkshops are extremely useful. Thesehave taken us through things to do andthink about. This kind of informationfrom experts is invaluable. There were project leaders from 34countries, all bringing their own specialstories of how Laureus works in theirown part of the world. It was fascinating. And though I have had the pleasureof visiting Laureus projects on fourcontinents, I still found it an eye-openerto see such a unique gathering of somany people who are so passionateabout what sport can do in so manydifferent kinds of communities. My most memorable moment, withoutdoubt, was watching Rwanda’sParalympic star Dominique Bizimana, who lost his legs in the civil war there, captivate a large group of these projectleaders with a display of his sittingvolleyball skills. At the time I was being dragged into agame of basketball along with Morné duPlessis and Hugo Porta, but we all hadto stop to watch this amazing man inaction. Then he got some of the projectleaders to try it and our admiration forwhat he could do increased by aboutone thousand per cent. The objective of the Summit wasto strengthen the global network ofLaureus projects by allowing them thechance to share ideas, knowledge andgood practice with one another. And mygoodness that worked. Many of the project leaders told mehow much they had received fromthe Summit and how it would makeso much difference to their livesnow. Well, believe me, I came awaythinking exactly the same, with evenmore determination to work harder tosupport great enthusiasts like that.

SUCCESS STORY 1716FIGHT FOR PEACEROBERTOCUSTODIOSUccESS STORYSpeaking to Laureus from the Rio base ofthe Fight for Peace project, Roberto Custodioshares his experience.ROBERTO WITH HIS DAUGHTER RILLARYI love coaching. For me,it is passing on what youhave learnt and that isa great joy, especiallypassing on to the youngpeople in the marécommunity here. The Laureus-supported Fight for Peaceproject in Rio uses boxing and martialarts training to help vulnerable youngpeople, as Roberto once was, to findnew direction and purpose in life. Theproject has a sister initiative in eastLondon with the same goals. Now aged 25, Roberto has traveledfrom country to country with theBrazilian national team. And, thoughbased with them in Sao Paulo, it is oftestament to his character and love forhis community that he remains a coachto those in Maré looking for someone torely on, as he once needed himself. He says: “I love coaching. For me, it ispassing on what you have learnt andthat is a great joy, especially passingon to the young people in the Marécommunity here.”And he sees first-hand that despite theproblems Rio still faces, the work ofFFP is making a remarkable differenceto lives here in Maré.He was just 13 when his father wasmurdered. He had never imagined sucha thing would happen to the man heloved so much. And amid thoughts ofrevenge, anger and hopelessness, hefaced not only the end of his father’slife, but the possibility of throwing hisown away as well.“It was pretty much at the time myfather was killed that I joined Fight forPeace (FFP). It was crucial in changingmy way of thinking.”I was only thinkingabout vengeance, butthe Fight for Peaceproject was there tostop me.This devastating event was 12 years agonow. But since that dark time, RobertoCustodio, a native of the Maré favelasin Rio de Janeiro, has emerged as oneof his country’s most promising boxers, only missing out on a place at thisyear’s London Games by the slightestof margins. One of the younger members of theBrazilian national boxing team, thefighter from Rio was overlooked in placeof a more experienced pair of hands.“It was tricky and it would have beengreat,” he says, “but I look forwardto doing a good job and fighting for aplace in Rio 2016.”It’s the kind of modest strength andambition that has seen him triumphover far greater adversity to becomethe admired figure he is in hiscommunity today.Roberto’s childhood home was theMaré favelas of Rio de Janeiro. Here, faced with growing up without hisfather, he battled with thoughts ofseeking revenge against those whohad murdered him. However, it turnedout to be a boxing project, recentlyset up in Maré, which helped convincehim otherwise.Speaking to Laureus from the Rio baseof the FFP project, Roberto says: “I wasonly thinking about vengeance, but theproject was there to stop me. I came torealise that by taking revenge it wouldmake it even worse. I would have hadrevenge, but life for my family, andany family I might have in the future, would be even worse. That’s why I threwmyself into sport.”ROBERTO IN TRAINING AT LAUREUS-SUPPORTED PROJECT FIGHT FOR PEACE, RIO.PHOTOGRAPH BY BEN MOLDENHAUER

These coaches arealso mentors, community organisersand mediators. Investing in propertraining and offering support for thesecoaches is vital to sports-based youthdevelopment. It’s important for anarea such as New Orleans, especiallypost-Katrina, to have quality coacheshelping kids here.”MERCEDES-BENZ USA IS COMMITTING US$1.3 MILLION (¤990,000) TO THE LAUREUS NATIONAL FOUNDATION IN THE UNITED STATES

BERLIN PROJECT VISIT 3534PROJECT VISIT TOBERLINNEUKOELLN, GERmANYLike so many of Europe’s great capitals, the tale ofBerlin is one of two cities. Though some parts boastgreat beauty and affluence, other parts suffer fromhigh levels of crime, lack of opportunity and, perhapsmost destructively, inter-community tension.BOXING GREAT AND LAUREUSAMBASSADOR AXEL SCHULZ VISITEDTHE PROJECT IN OCTOBER 2012He was a goodsportsman, aboxer, and havingthought abouthow much hehad learnt throughsport, he wantedto help kids dothe same.ECKHARD LAZAIHEAD OF BEHAVIOURALTRAINING, BERLIN POLICE FORCEBut he suspected that sport alonewould never be enough. “He had thisidea that there should be cooperationbetween sports, social work and thepolice. There was no cooperation backthen. And he realised only this couldsolve these major problems. I was ayoung police officer than, and I followedin his footsteps.”And his work now, 20 years on from thestart of his father’s with KICK, perfectlyreflects a new, more considered way oftackling crime. He explains: “In the past the focus wason repression. I would try to get thecriminal and put him in jail. But that’snot enough. It’s important, but notenough.“When you have young peoplecommitting crimes you have to ask‘what can I do to prevent you doing itagain? How can I show you that you’reimportant as a person.’THE KICK IM BOXRING PROJECTIN NEUKOELLN, BERLINNeukoelln, in the old East Berlin, is onesuch area. Based here, offering youngpeople of the area boxing opportunities,is the Laureus-supported KICK imBoxring project.
