PrincetonAppliedResearchK0235Flat Cell• Simplifies electrochemical corrosionmeasurement and impedance analysis• Accommodates a wide variety of flatspecimens with no mechanicalpreparation• Enables quick changing of testelectrodes• Disassembles quickly and easily• Operates with a small sample volumeThe Princeton Applied Research Model K0235Flat Cell gives you a simple, easy-to-usevehicle for electrochemical testing on any flatspecimen larger than 0.75 in. 2 (1.5 cm 2 ). Thepractical design of the Flat Cell allows it toaccommodate a wide range of electrode shapesand sizes, eliminating the need for machining orspecial mechanical preparation. The Flat Cell is constructed of a Pyrex glasscylinder body with polypropylene end caps. TheFlat Cell’s sample holder can accommodate testelectrodes ranging from 3/4 in. diameter discsto 6 in. x 6 in. flat panels. In fact, virtually anysize specimen can be used, provided it is flatand less than 3/8 in. thick.Mounting the specimen is easy — a uniqueadjustable shoe assembly makes electricalcontact with the back surface of the specimenand secures the specimen against a Teflongasket. The gasket allows an area of 1 cm 2 tobe exposed to the cell solution. Theconfiguration of the gasket minimizes crevicecorrosion of the sample. The Flat Cell is supplied complete with asilver/silver chloride reference electrode and aplatinum-on-niobium counter electrode. Inletand outlet ports are provided to allowreplenishment of the test solution during or afteran experiment. For deaeration and thermometermounting, an additional port is provided.Solution can be stirred with a standardmagnetic stirrer.

K0235Flat CellApplicationsGeneralThe design of the Flat Cell makes it easy to usespecimens not prepared as electrochemical testelectrodes. This provides three major benefits:• Specimens can be obtained from a variety of sources.• For corrosion applications, the test electrode can moreclosely model the metal actually used in service.• Deformation and induced stresses resulting from anycutting, shearing, or punching that takes place duringsample preparation can be avoided.Galvanic CorrosionThe Flat Cell simplifies galvanic corrosion experiments. Ifthe auxiliary end cap is replaced with a sample end cap, galvanic corrosion experiments can be performed in thesame cell used for conventional corrosion experiments.Coated SpecimensThe Flat Cell also makes it easier to prepare coatedspecimens for evaluation using corrosion andelectrochemical impedance test methods. A coating canbe applied to a test panel and used as a specimenwithout further sizing or preparation. This eliminates edgecoating and any coating damage that might occur duringmachining.Current DistributionThe cylindrical shape of the Flat Cell and the placementof the counter electode directly opposite the workingelectrode provide optimum current distribution on thesurface of the working electrode. Offsetting the referenceelectrode and using a 1.5 mm O.D. capillary as a Lugginprobe result in minimum shielding of the workingelectrode surface. Consequently, you can perform moreaccurate impedance measurements and iR potential errorcorrections.AccessoriesReplacement parts for the K0235 Flat Cell may beordered seperately.
