Dear <strong>Second</strong> <strong>Harvest</strong> Community,<br />
Thank you for your extraordinary partnership! Not since the Loma<br />
Prieta earthquake twenty years ago have we joined together on such a<br />
massive scale in order to ensure that every neighbor makes it through<br />
this economic crisis.<br />
The poor economy has resulted in much hardship. Venerable businesses<br />
like Gottschalks, which have been at the center of our community<br />
for many years, have disappeared. Santa Cruz County has had one of<br />
the highest unemployment rates in California, and <strong>Second</strong> <strong>Harvest</strong><br />
provided food assistance to over 60,000 people in March. Over 6,000<br />
children are facing major reductions in their health insurance. The<br />
budget must balance, but with these cuts, our increasingly vulnerable<br />
community members have ever fewer nets to catch them when they fall.<br />
Even though we are sobered by the extraordinary strains brought on by<br />
this downturn, it is important to recognize all of the good things that<br />
we have. Above all, we have a community that cares.<br />
As fall brings the harvest, we are also reminded of the fall of 1989, when<br />
the ground was ripped out from under us in a mere 15 seconds. We<br />
were able to restore the community then, and we will do so again as we<br />
pull ourselves out of this recession.<br />
We are thrilled to be moving into our expanded <strong>Second</strong> <strong>Harvest</strong><br />
warehouse, which has been 20 years in the making. We will be able to<br />
distribute twice as much food with the same number of employees. We<br />
are also excited to be able to teach nutrition education classes in our<br />
new kitchen. It is critical that we meet our community’s increasing need<br />
for food while stewarding our resources to ensure that 95 cents of every<br />
dollar continues to provide direct services.<br />
As we move into the new fiscal year, we are making a shift in the focus<br />
of our work. We will dramatically grow our focus on healthy foods and<br />
nutrition education. In addition, we will be addressing obesity and<br />
diabetes by providing more fresh fruits and vegetables to low income<br />
families.<br />
We encourage each and every one of you to continue your work on<br />
behalf of our common mission.<br />

Together we are building a legacy of health for our children by ensuring<br />
that everyone has the opportunity to grow in their knowledge and wellbeing<br />

Passion For Produce<br />
<strong>Second</strong> <strong>Harvest</strong> recently partnered with the Church of the Nazarene to launch a pilot<br />
Passion For Produce site. Volunteer nutrition educators learned how to give nutrition<br />
presentations in Spanish and English and will begin to teach and distribute food with<br />
their teams. As the program expands, Passion For Produce sites will be accepting new<br />
volunteers who are committed to cutting the obesity and diabetes rates in our<br />
community.<br />
Expansion Project Continues<br />
A Community Comes Together<br />
In spite of unemployment rates that affected up to 1 in 4<br />
Watsonville residents, our community gave more than ever<br />
to the Holiday <strong>Food</strong> Drive. At over 1.9 million pounds of<br />
food and cash equivalent, this year’s drive broke all prior<br />
records and helped <strong>Second</strong> <strong>Harvest</strong> rise to the challenge<br />
of the increased need for food in our community.<br />
Phase II of the expansion project will conclude in September, bringing many new changes.<br />
A new roof with skylights has brightened up the produce packing room. Our staff works out<br />
of one central office and a fully equipped teaching kitchen is helping us combat the obesity<br />
epidemic through education. Yet to come, the third and final phase of expansion at our<br />
warehouse will bring us up to industry standard in food distribution and storage.<br />

OUR Programs<br />
FEED HOPE!<br />
<strong>Food</strong> For Children<br />
This program serves low-income families with children at 48<br />
different sites throughout the area including subsidized apartment<br />
complexes, schools, and churches. Fresh produce and staples are<br />
provided at convenient locations so that parents are able to access<br />
assistance without missing work.<br />
Emergency <strong>Food</strong> Assistance<br />
<strong>Second</strong> <strong>Harvest</strong> supplies USDA commodities at seven locations around<br />
the county. Income-qualifying families can pick up bags of different items<br />
once each month.<br />
Agency <strong>Food</strong> Distribution<br />
<strong>Second</strong> <strong>Harvest</strong> acts as the distribution hub for 180 member pantries, soup<br />
kitchens, and other agencies, which were responsible for distributing over<br />
6.8 million pounds of food last year. These agencies provide a variety of social<br />
services to the community, including head start, senior activity centers, afterschool<br />
programs, soup kitchens, and more. Agencies can shop at the warehouse<br />
or order items online to receive the freshest fruits and vegetables available.<br />
Outreach and Education<br />
Staff and volunteers provide nutrition education to community members<br />
in order to promote healthy habits. The Outreach Team educates the<br />
community about food stamps, nutrition, and physical activity, as well<br />
as diabetes and obesity.<br />
Community <strong>Food</strong> Hotline<br />
The Hotline has been busy this year, referring over 500 people each<br />
month to their local food pantry or other social services. Through their<br />
work as dispatchers, hotline workers are well-equipped to understand the<br />
shifting day-to-day concerns of low-income people in our community.<br />
