DB Schenker plays an active role in assuring cleantransportation and handling of foodstuffs – from the origin to the end consumers.DB Schenker has established respective work routinesthroughout the Land Transport network: All foodstuffs, animalfeed and related items such as packaging material need tobe tagged with a special label as this is a precondition for theassurance of food safety.Integrated part of quality management systemOur staff which gets into contact with foodstuffs and foodrelatedcargo follows the HACCP (Hazard Analysis and CriticalControl Point) standards as well as other specific hygienicinstructions.Food safety is also an integral element of the qualitymanagement system of DB Schenker Land Transport.All our pan-European products offer our clients thepossi bility of transporting packed foodstuffs in ambientcon ditions. e-tools & ITPhoto: © Christopher Hall, fotolia.comThe informational backbone ofreliable logisticsInformation technology is a vital element for providing professional and reliableforwarding and logistics services around the world.DB Schenker is capable of efficient electronic interchange ofall relevant shipping information, lead times, performanceindicators, etc.Unified worldwide information and communication systemsare the backbone to handle shipments not only physically,but also digitally to the satisfaction of the clientele.State of the art methods such as SWORD, EDI, tracking incl.electronic proofs of delivery (ePOD), barcoding/scanningand mobile communications ensure efficient processes andsmooth flow of information between DB Schenker, the localsubsidiaries and branches and last but not least the customers.Barcoding and ePODFor instance, every packing piece of a terminal-handled shipmentis tagged with barcoded labels and – at crucial points ofthe transport chain – scanned. Thus, it is possible to monitorthe shipment flow not only on shipment but even on packagelevel. Deviations are reported immediately to the operationalsystems so that corrective actions can be taken without delay.In addition, tracking events are automatically set and transferredinto the tracking application where detailed status informationabout each shipment is shown for the convenienceof shippers and consignees.Another important element of DB Schenker’s IT capabilities isthe electronic proof of delivery (ePOD). The receipt of cargois confirmed by the consignee on the respective documents.On request, this proof of delivery is digitized and directly sentto the shipper who can then, for instance, issue the respectiveinvoice immediately.Electronic interchange of order data with customers:The future of data interchange procedures and customerinterfaces is being increasingly dictated by internationalcommunication standards. In order to even further enhancecustomer benefit, all our data transfer is handled in accordancewith the UN’s Electronic Data Interchange for Administration,Commerce and Transport standard (EDIFACT).The support of other standards such as XML, SAP IDOC, etc.enables DB Schenker to meet the individual needs of its customersand to respond to the changing market requirements.Important interfaces of DB Schenker and its customers arethe DB Schenker Scheduler as well as the connected trackingsystem.SWORD – the integrated data networkDB Schenker has implemented a unified worldwide informationand communications system to manage shipments allthe way through from the sender to the recipient.
