FEAR AND TERROR IN A POST-POLITICAL AGE435sense that America had it coming to it was quite widespread in somesupposedly respectable quarters, where a barely concealed schadenfreudewas in evidence. Does this go some way towards explaining whyit is that one of those arrested in the summer of 2006 after an allegedplot to use liquid explosives on airlines flying from London’s Heathrowairport has turned out to be the son of a UK Conservative Partyagent?American consumerism is now widely viewed with contempt, butthis reflects a broader view of human action in the world. Increasingly,Western intellectuals have come to portray this as being largelynegative. 24 In certain quarters ambition has become portrayed asarrogant, development as dangerous and success as selfish. Even inAmerica itself power has become presented as egotism, freedom asillusory and the desire to defend oneself as the act of a bully. Westernsociety today is replete with individuals and institutions that appeardetermined to criticize and undermine human achievements. Thepresident of Britain’s Royal Society called one of his latest books OurFinal Century: Will the Human Race Survive the Twenty-First Century?, 25while the professor of European Thought at the London School ofEconomics is comfortable describing human beings as being littlemore than a plague upon the planet in his book entitled Straw Dogs:Thoughts on Humans and Other Animals. 26 A recent edition of theprestigious UK science journal New Scientist speculated positively as towhat the earth would be like without humans (and presumablywithout the New Scientist) being there. 27 Nor are such ideas limited tothose of a few academics. Surely, when Michael Moore’s Stupid WhiteMen became the best-selling book on both sides of the Atlantic –selling over 300,000 copies in the UK in its first year of publicationalone – a few bright minds in the security world and beyond shouldhave noticed the growing depth of cynicism and disillusionment insociety and the potentially adverse consequences. 2824 M.
