WORKING RELATIONSHIPSReport directly to the Faculty <strong>Director</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Teacher</strong> <strong>Education</strong>, regarding daily activities and theperformance <strong>of</strong> assigned responsibilities.Represent the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong> in external relations related to teacher education withUniversity personnel (campus and system-wide), UC system-wide Deans and <strong>Director</strong>s <strong>of</strong><strong>Education</strong>, California Commission on <strong>Teacher</strong> Credentialing (CTCC) staff, public schoolteachers and administrators, statewide educational organizations, and legislators.II. BASIC FUNCTIONSThe <strong>Director</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Teacher</strong> <strong>Education</strong> is responsible for the coordination <strong>of</strong> the following programs:Master <strong>of</strong> Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) Program; Single Subject Student <strong>Teacher</strong> CredentialProgram; Single Subject Intern <strong>Teacher</strong> Program; Multiple Subjects Student <strong>Teacher</strong> CredentialProgram; as well as new teacher education degree or certificate programs in the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>Education</strong>. Under the general direction <strong>of</strong> the Faculty <strong>Director</strong>, this position provides overallmanagement, supervision, and leadership for these programs; emphasis programs such asBCLAD; and university partnerships with public school districts. This includes oversight <strong>of</strong> andcollaboration with district and site administrators, mentor teachers, as well as supervision <strong>of</strong>lecturers, supervisors <strong>of</strong> teacher education, and program coordinators. With the Faculty <strong>Director</strong>,the <strong>Director</strong> will establish strategic directions and plans for teacher education; oversee theongoing development and refinement <strong>of</strong> the core curriculum in alignments with Statecertification requirements; recruit, hire, and supervise instructors and program staff; and overseethe marketing <strong>of</strong> the program and the recruitment and retention <strong>of</strong> students.III. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND AUTHORITIES1. Program DevelopmentProvide leadership to and collaborate with Senate and non-Senate faculty to develop andcontinually improve curriculum in all teacher education programs.Consult with Faculty <strong>Director</strong>, Associate Dean, and other program directors to ensurearticulation and coordination between programs where appropriate.Collaborate with faculty across <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong> programs to develop and improve curricularconnections among those programs and to promote a research-based curriculum for teacherpreparation.


Collaborate with faculty across UC Irvine schools to develop and strengthen innovativepathways for teacher preparation.Analyze and interpret pertinent state laws and regulations as related to teacher licensure andcredentialing. Appropriately communicate with key stakeholders.Take a leadership role to develop new programs and write program documents to complywith legislation that requires program changes.Collaborate with program faculty, staff, campus-wide schools and UCI school districtpartners to create high quality programs that reflect the UC mission for teacher preparation,that meet the needs <strong>of</strong> all <strong>of</strong> our students and K-12 school districts.Upon request, teach and/or make presentations to maintain teaching and supervisoryexpertise, communication and connection with credential candidates.Oversee articulation agreements with community colleges for <strong>Education</strong> courses andprograms.Expand the existing UCI/<strong>School</strong> Partnerships model by identifying additional school districtsand schools to meet the increased student teacher and placement needs based on increases inprogram growth.Communicate with K-12 school district superintendents, assistant superintendents, andpersonnel directors to invite their participation and identify partner schools within thedistricts.2. Administrative Management and LeadershipPlan, execute, and evaluate the programs to ensure that short- and long-term goals are metand credentialing standards are upheld according to University and State guidelines. Advisefaculty and other program administrators on significant aspects <strong>of</strong> program curriculum andpolicies. Serve in a leadership role with all credential programs, including those within the<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong> and those in other units on campus such as University Extension.Provide a coordinated, strategic schedule <strong>of</strong> classes for all teacher education programs,following UCI and <strong>School</strong> policies, procedures, and timelines.Ensure the course schedule for teacher education programs is developed to best meet theneeds <strong>of</strong> students and to maximize <strong>School</strong> resources.Plan and coordinate budget for full-time and part-time program faculty recruitment, classassignments, and program faculty work loads in collaboration with the Faculty <strong>Director</strong>.Recruit and recommend new full-time and part-time lecturers to meet current and futureneeds in the teacher education programs. Review and recommend appropriate salary rates


for new full-time and part-time lecturers. Review and recommend levels <strong>of</strong> stipends paid toK-12 districts for their involvement in the training <strong>of</strong> student teachers.Supervise, evaluate, and provide effective leadership for program coordinators and facultyteaching in teacher education programs.Take a primary role to lead and participate in <strong>Teacher</strong> <strong>Education</strong> faculty meetings andpr<strong>of</strong>essional development activities.Coordinate, monitor, and continuously assess the placement <strong>of</strong> student teachers and internteachers. Oversee candidate placement support activities and respond to school site requestsfor information regarding applicants, available positions, and anticipated needs. Visit partnerschool sites on a regular basis and as needed.Oversee multiple- and single-subject coordinators’ school site visits, as well as thoseconducted by supervisors <strong>of</strong> teacher education, during fieldwork and student teaching.Provide leadership to and collaborate with program faculty to enhance the pr<strong>of</strong>essionaldevelopment <strong>of</strong> mentor teachers.Partner with the Faculty <strong>Director</strong>, other program directors, <strong>Director</strong> <strong>of</strong> Student Affairs, andAssistant Dean to develop and maintain a strategic plan for utilizing financial aid as a tool forenrollment management.Ensure public information (web, catalogue, marketing, etc.) is maintained and producedaccording to best practices and University guidelines.Participate in the <strong>School</strong>’s <strong>Teacher</strong> <strong>Education</strong> Steering Committee, <strong>Director</strong>s group, andother <strong>School</strong> committees and task forces; the statewide Deans and <strong>Director</strong>s group; as well asother administrative posts assigned by the Faculty <strong>Director</strong>.Actively participate in regional and statewide meetings related to teacher education andpublic policy as requested, and share pertinent information with program faculty andadministrators in the <strong>School</strong>, University Extension, and other units as warranted.Provide reports internally and externally, as appropriate, regarding legislative action items,changes in teacher preparation standards and credential processes, statewide examinationrequirements, and university credential program evaluations.3. Student Recruitment and RetentionCollaborate with the <strong>Director</strong> <strong>of</strong> Student Affairs, the <strong>Director</strong> <strong>of</strong> Undergraduate <strong>Education</strong>programs, and other senior administrators in the <strong>School</strong> to promote program growth andstudent recruitment.


Develop, maintain, and coordinate programs to facilitate an increased number <strong>of</strong> credentialand master’s students and to assist in meeting student needs and retention <strong>of</strong> students.In consultation with the Faculty <strong>Director</strong> and the <strong>Director</strong> <strong>of</strong> Student Affairs, developadmissions policies and procedures and determine qualifications for admission to teachereducation programs.Manage the admissions process for credential and master’s programs, including evaluatingadmissions files, interviewing applicants, giving full consideration to issues related todiversity and equal opportunity, and recommending students for admissions to the Faculty<strong>Director</strong>.Develop a retention plan that will assist all students in completing credential and master’sprograms.Collaborate with program faculty, staff, and campus units such as the Financial Aid Office todevelop proactive student assistance plans in the areas <strong>of</strong> part-time enrollment, financialneeds, passage <strong>of</strong> state-required exams, remediation <strong>of</strong> skills, academic and personalcounseling, and the creation <strong>of</strong> individual assistance plans as needed to retain students.With Credential Program Coordinators, monitor evaluations <strong>of</strong> student teachers by methodsadvisors and mentor teachers, and take appropriate actions when required. Recommend andcoordinate the dismissal <strong>of</strong> students from credential programs if necessary.Verify the final eligibility <strong>of</strong> candidates for credentialing by signing <strong>of</strong>f on all credentialapplications.Review and resolve student grievances and/or school site concerns regarding teachereducation programs.4. Program AssessmentPlan and coordinate all <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong> activities related to accreditation requirementsmandated by the California Commission on <strong>Teacher</strong> Credentialing (CCTC). Ensure requireddata are collected and maintained as part <strong>of</strong> ongoing regular program operations.In collaboration with program faculty and staff in the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong> and UniversityExtension, write program documents and prepare reports to meet CTCC requirements.Respond to CTCC questions and implement program and curriculum changes recommendedby reviewers.Partner with the Faculty <strong>Director</strong>, Senate and non-Senate faculty, and appropriateadministrators to review and evaluate programs in regard to legal compliance with theregulations and standards <strong>of</strong> the California Commission on <strong>Teacher</strong> Credentialing (CCTC),as well as the academic expectations <strong>of</strong> the University, the needs <strong>of</strong> the constituency area,and budgetary constraints.


Plan and coordinate yearly program evaluation procedures and protocols, includingclassroom observations, course evaluations, and university supervisor evaluations.Monitor and evaluate performance <strong>of</strong> teacher education program faculty. Conduct and reporton observations <strong>of</strong> faculty teaching, as one component <strong>of</strong> program assessment. InformFaculty <strong>Director</strong> <strong>of</strong> pertinent issues related to that performance. Meet and share feedbackwith faculty as directed by the Faculty <strong>Director</strong>.Ensure <strong>School</strong> and University policies, procedures, and timelines are followed for allpersonnel actions.IV.SCOPEThe incumbent directly manages the following:Coordinator <strong>of</strong> the Multiple Subjects Credential ProgramCoordinator <strong>of</strong> the Single Subject Program and theCoordinator <strong>of</strong> the Intern ProgramAcademic Coordinator IAcademic Coordinator IAcademic Coordinator IThe incumbent shares supervisory responsibilities for:40-60 Lecturers to teach in the MAT and Credential <strong>Programs</strong>30-40 supervisors to monitor student and intern teachers in public school classroomsduring student/intern teaching.V. SKILLS AND ABILITIES/EXPERIENCEAdvanced degree in <strong>Education</strong> or a related field or some combination <strong>of</strong> education andexperience that is applicable to the responsibilities <strong>of</strong> the position.Experience teaching at the university level.Demonstrated experience <strong>of</strong> leadership in public K-12 schools, including public school teachingand/or administration.Experience working with school district administrators/superintendents, school administrators,classroom teachers, and student teachers.Experience with and knowledge <strong>of</strong> teacher credential programs and the California ContentStandards.Experience fostering equality <strong>of</strong> educational opportunity and advancing school success amongdiverse students.Experience with and knowledge <strong>of</strong> educational technology and its applications.


Experience designing and evaluating educational programs.Salary: Salary is commensurate with education and experience.
