Test DefinitionsITBS - Iowa Test of Basic Skills and National Percentile Rank Score(grades 1-8)The Iowa test of Basic Skills (ITBS) is a nationally standardizednorm-referenced test (NRT). The test examines skills in varioussubjects such as math and Language arts. The participants areusually scored in percentages, and also in comparison to otherparticipants across the country. The exam measures the skill andachievement of students from kindergarten to grade eight with theobjective of providing an in-depth measure of important educationalobjectives. The ITBS provides reliable information about thestudents’ skill development as well as critical reasoning, in comparisonto their peers.A national percentile rank score compares the achievement of astudent or a group of students to the achievement of a nationalsample of students who are in the same grade and who weretested at the same time of the year (fall, midyear, or spring). Forexample, if a student earned a percentile rank of 72 on the sciencetest, it means she scored higher than 72 percent of the studentsin the group with which she is being compared.CRCT - Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (grades 1-8)The CRCT measures how well students acquire the skills andknowledge described in the Georgia Performance Standards(GPS). This information is used to diagnose individual studentstrengths and weaknesses as related to the instruction of theGPS, and to gauge the quality of education throughout Georgia.EOCT - End of Course Tests (high School)The EOCT align with the Georgia curriculum standards and includeassessment of specific content knowledge and skills. Theassessments provide diagnostic information to help students identifystrengths and areas of need in learning, therefore improvingperformance in all high school courses and on other assessments, such as the GHSGT.GHSGT - Georgia High School Graduation Test (11th grade)Georgia’s graduation tests provide valuable information for students, educators, and parents about student strengths and areasfor improvement. The tests identify students who may need additionalinstruction in the concepts and skills required for a diploma.SAT - Scholastic Assessment Test (optional test)The optional SAT reasoning test is a measure of the criticalthinking skills needed for academic success in college. The SATassesses how well a student analyzes and solves problems. Allcolleges and universities in Georgia accept scores from the SATfor admission purposes.Page 5

Test Taking TipsTEST-TAKING TIPS FOR STUDENTSPrepare yourself emotionally for taking the test. If you are overly anxiousabout taking the test, much of your energy and potential will be sappedby the anxiety and you will not do as well as you should. It frequentlyhelps to reduce anxiety if you know more about the test, such as whattype of test you are taking, what subject areas are tested, and what isthe purpose of the test.Follow normal routines. Interruption of normal routines may affect yourperformance. The night before the test you should not stay up later thanusual since fatigue may lead to poor test performance. The day of thetest you should eat a normal breakfast and lunch.Skipping meals or overeating before taking a test may adversely affectyour performance.Concentrate. Do not allow yourself to be distracted by noises or movementsaround you.Read instructions or directions carefully before marking any answer. Ifyou do not understand the directions, raise your hand, and ask for help.Follow directions. Pay close attention to the samples. They are on the testto help you understand what the items on the test will be like and how tomark your answer document properly.Keep your test booklet and answer document together. This saves timeand lessens the chance of marking answers in the wrong place.Read the entire question and all answer choices. You need to read eachitem and all answer choices before marking your answer.Make an educated guess. Making an educated guess means that you areable to eliminate one or more choices. For example, if there are fourchoices and you do not know which choice is correct, but do know thattwo choices are incorrect, you have a 50-50 chance of choosing thecorrect answer. You should also remember that there is no pattern ofcorrect answers. For example, if the last three correct answer choiceswere “D,” the next correct answer may be A, B, C, or D.Place your answer correctly on the answer document. While taking tests, you should match the number on the answer document to the item numberin the test booklet. This is especially important if you skip questionsand go back to them later. You should mark only one answer for eachitem. If two answers are marked for the same item, the item will becounted as incorrect. If you erase an answer, you should be certain thatit is erased completely and carefully so that holes are not made in theanswer document.Keep track of the time. Since most statewide tests have a time limit, beaware of the amount of time allocated to each section. Pace your self sothat you will be able to complete the section within the time limit.Use all of the time allocated. Persistence pays off.Page 72

Test Taking TipsTEST-TAKING TIPS FOR PARENTSBe present and on time during the testing period. The tests will be administered during the morning hours of April 21 -25. Being absent or tardy may cause students to do less than theirbest so try to have your children in school and on time.Maintain as normal a schedule as possible.During the testing period, make sure that your child gets as muchsleep each night as he/she normally gets on a school night.Emphasize the importance of understanding and following test directions.Encourage your child to read and listen carefully to the directions foreach test while the teacher reads them and then to follow the directionsexactly. Ask the teacher to explain if directions are unclear.Encourage your child to carefully read all of the answer choices beforechoosing their answer. It is important to look at all the answer choices for a question beforeselecting one. For many questions, it is necessary to compare theanswer choices and then choose the best one.Talk to your child about what to do if they are not sure of an answer. When not sure about the correct choice to a test question, it is best tofirst eliminate any choices you know are wrong and then choose ananswer from among the choices that remain.Tell your child that while it is important to mark answers so that theycan be properly scored, it is not necessary to spend time makingthe marks especially neat.Students will mark answers by filling in circles with heavy, darkmarks. It is not necessary to spend a lot of time making perfectlyneat marks. When changing an answer, the first mark should beerased as completely as possible.Work with your child on maintaining a steady work pace.It is important to work at a steady pace and try not to waste time. If acertain question takes a lot of time, it is wise to skip it and try againlater if there is time.Emphasize the importance of using the rest periods wisely. When the teacher gives a rest periods between tests, studentsshould use them to stretch if tired of sitting.Page 73
