Test DefinitionsITBS - Iowa Test of Basic Skills and National Percentile Rank Score(grades 1-8)The Iowa test of Basic Skills (ITBS) is a nationally standardizednorm-referenced test (NRT). The test examines skills in varioussubjects such as math and Language arts. The participants areusually scored in percentages, and also in comparison to otherparticipants across the country. The exam measures the skill andachievement of students from kindergarten to grade eight with theobjective of providing an in-depth measure of important educationalobjectives. The ITBS provides reliable information about thestudents’ skill development as well as critical reasoning, in comparisonto their peers.A national percentile rank score compares the achievement of astudent or a group of students to the achievement of a nationalsample of students who are in the same grade and who weretested at the same time of the year (fall, midyear, or spring). Forexample, if a student earned a percentile rank of 72 on the sciencetest, it means she scored higher than 72 percent of the studentsin the group with which she is being compared.CRCT - Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (grades 1-8)The CRCT measures how well students acquire the skills andknowledge described in the Georgia Performance Standards(GPS). This information is used to diagnose individual studentstrengths and weaknesses as related to the instruction of theGPS, and to gauge the quality of education throughout Georgia.EOCT - End of Course Tests (high School)The EOCT align with the Georgia curriculum standards and includeassessment of specific content knowledge and skills. Theassessments provide diagnostic information to help students identifystrengths and areas of need in learning, therefore improvingperformance in all high school courses and on other assessments,such as the GHSGT.GHSGT - Georgia High School Graduation Test (11th grade)Georgia’s graduation tests provide valuable information for students,educators, and parents about student strengths and areasfor improvement. The tests identify students who may need additionalinstruction in the concepts and skills required for a diploma.SAT - Scholastic Assessment Test (optional test)The optional SAT reasoning test is a measure of the criticalthinking skills needed for academic success in college. The SATassesses how well a student analyzes and solves problems. Allcolleges and universities in Georgia accept scores from the SATfor admission purposes.Page 5
